The product, in the report: Brinkmann Elite Dual Sear Gas Grill
Dear Customer Care:
My husband and I purchased a Brinkmann Elite Dual Sear Gas Grill from Home Depot on 05/03/14 for our family grilling needs.
On Saturday, 9/26/15 we proceeded to turn on the grill to pre-heat it prior to cooking our baby back ribs (no added oils, just dry rub) like we have done dozens of times before.
No sign of anything being wrong. We put the ribs on, checked ribs at normal interval and turned them. When we went out to turn again , the entire grill was engulfed in black flame, the outer metal was bubbled and charred to black and white, the smell of burnt metal and plastic from handle and thermometer, etc. was strong, the heat was so dangerous we were grateful our children weren’t outside playing or that the propane tank didn’t explode and injure or kill anyone, the heat also blackened our outer stucco wall , and warped our window and melted seal to window.
I am a director for a marketing and advertising company and work with attorneys across all 50 states so I’ve seen cases involving gas grills and we could tell there was a defect in where the gas line runs through the grill.
We paid a total of $357.49 including buying the Premium Cover for the Grill.
We are routine in our cleaning of the grill in-between uses, we are responsible BBQ/Grill/Chefs and have a taste for high end, gourmet products. We made no error, this grill is dangerous.
I’m going to now turn this over to you to handle in the immediate, appropriate manner as you see fit.
I also typed this up in the customer service section of the Brinkmann site and only get an error message stating my message did not go through. When calling you have to give your phone number and are placed in some sort of queue in hopes to be called back. Horrible service.
Thank you

Text of Consumer’s letter dated September 16, 2015 to CPSC received via fax (Excerpted):
RE: Unsafe Propane Gas Grill- Brinkmann Select Model #810-6550-S, SN TBC-6550S-002570-1214Y
I have repeatedly sought to engage The Brinkmann Corporation (Address: 4215 McEwan Road, Dallas, Texas 75244) since purchase of this unit on May 13, 2015 to assist in resolving the following issues:
• Four of the five burners on the unit will not ignite upon utilizing the built in igniter. The burner closest to the igniter (which is functional and can be observed as sparking) will light but the remaining four burners will only spew out dangerous propane gas without igniting.
• I observed recently that the burners would light manually even with the propane tank valve in a closed position. It is apparently leaking out propane gas when the propane tank is connected, a very dangerous situation as you may well knows.

The product, in the report: BRINKMANN 5-burner LP Grill with side burner
The BRINKMANN 5-burner propane gas grill Model No. 810-2546-C has a set of metal c-shaped (in section) slots at the back of the burners that are intended to ignite burners adjacent to the piezo-electric ignited burner. All but one of the slots fell off. On examination, it appears that the tack welds at the center of each piece that should hold the slot in place were missing or inadequately fused. This creates a hazardous condition, as a large volume of gas must enter the burner area before ignition occurs on burners not ignited by the piezo-electric igniter.

The product, in the report: Brinkman Gas Grill - reports, model number etc on file with Brinkman, [REDACTED], and can be obtained. THis person can be contacted at [REDACTED] about the incident and has information relating to the incident and inspection. [REDACTED]@brinkmann.net [REDACTED]@brinkmann.net
We bought a NEW Gas Grill and were using it for the FIRST time (we have had other grills for years.) The grill spewed a LARGE flame, caught the tank on fire and melted the coupler around the tank. We had to let the tank empty itself.
It has been looked at by engineers from the Tank company, Uhaul where the tank was inspected THE DAY OF THE INCIDENT and Brinkman, the manufacturer of the grill.
Brinkman has blamed the tank from day one, despite it passing inspection on two occasions.
They refuse to pay to reside our home, as the fire damaged it (It is a new home, just bought in May 2013)
They admitted the tank was neither overfilled, nor out of recertification - yet blame them and deny our claim without an explanation as to WHY it should be the tank’s fault.
During inspection, by Brinkaman’s OWN engineer, the regulator on the grill caught fire, and spewed flames.
Despite this obvious flaw, they refuse to acknowledge it and said the regulator on the grill (Made in China) is not significant.
THis is on tape, and was witnessed by myself, an engineer from Uhaul, and Brinkan’s rep.
They refuse to give me the evidence nor any reports.
Brinkaman had a similar issue with other regulators and had to recall them for the same reason.
There is NO DOUBT from myself and Uhaul’s engineers that this caught my home and the grill on fire, and it is a danger.
Please help us get this resolved, and these grills off the market!

The product, in the report: Brinkmann gas grill, Model #810-2545-W, Serial #TBC-2545W-133268-0512Y
Brinkmann Grill Model #810-2545-W has many safety issues while cooking. Our incident was a malfunctioning Regulator, which allows how much gas goes thru. Too much gas caused lid to flip open with a fire burst, which then broke our window. Brinkmann refuses to contact me via email or phone. Their customer service is non-exsistent. BBB and other website have many complaints as well.

The product, in the report: Gas Grill regulator
The caller stated that gas grill out-take from the regulator is leaking. He noticed this when he changed the propane tank and checked for leaks. The leak is right at the junction of the hose and the regulator, he feels that there is a faulty seal on the regulator.
7/8/13 He contacted the manufacturer and he was informed that they had not receive any complaints on these regulators.
The regulator was not related to any recalls.
The caller feels that this regualtor is unsafe and should be reported.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: The grill manufacturer had sent a replacement regulator after I complained to them. I installed the new unit, but unfortunately I discarded the defective regulator. I did however retain a photograph of the defective unit. Please note that the red arrow in the photograph points to where the leak was noted (i.e. on the right side of the white tape where the connection goes from the tank into the regulator).

The product, in the report: four burner Gas Grill
The consumer says the original gas tank was empty. He exchanged the gas tank with the retailer. He used it for the first time on Memorial day (5/27/13).
Once he used it he smelled the presence of a gas odor. After twenty minutes he noticed flames shooting out of the outlet where they attach the regulator to the tank.
The consumer acted promptly and shut off all the four burners on the top. He extinguished the flame by pouring water on the unit. He received minor burns on his fingers on his right hand.
The attachment of the grill to the cylinder has a gas leak which caused this to happen. The entire plastic that is holding to the cylinder is completely burned.
The incident has been communicated to Brinkmann and [REDACTED].

By the first of August I had to return it due to several of the crossover channels just fell off. In December the replacement grill did the exact same thing. This is a very serious safety issue. Purchased a Brinkmann 5 Burner Gas Grill with Smoker 2 weeks ago. Have used all of the features 4 or 5 times and this morning, put a brisket in the smoker at 250 degrees and went to the store. When I got home (hour and a half), the grill had exploded and the entire grill was burnt to pieces. No plastic was left, the gas lines were all disintegrated, the doors had burst open and were dented, the propane tank had blow the gas line and fitting off and was covered in white residue. I am very lucky I wasn’t standing in front of the grill or even worse, glad my three year old wasn’t outside nearby.

The product, in the report: Patio gas grill, PORTICO COLLECTION
Purchased a BRINKMAN LP gas patio grill at Home Depot; the grill is labeled PORTICO COLLECTION and is model # 810-3260-S. I took the unit home and assembled per the instructions and connected LP gas tank. Started grill to grill fish in a basket. Waited for grill to warm up with temperature set at medium low. I was ready to place fish on grill and reached with one hand to grab the grill handle on the front to open the grill top. The grill was so hot I dropped the handle as it was too hot to hold. I received minor burns on two fingers. This grill also was found to have very sharp edges on the sides of grill top. I believe that this product represents a potential hazard and is improperly designed/manufactured. I am returning product to Home Depot and advising them of potential issues. If a small child were to walk by this grill while it was turned on and reached to grab the grill handle, I believe that they could suffer burns to their fingers/hands. The grill shipping box indicates that it is “DESIGN CERTIFIED”; i am not sure if this is a industry ceretification or simply a play on words. This product is dangerous and hazardous.

The product, in the report: Brinkman model number Model # 810-3821-S
After grilling dinner, turned all 3 valves off to turn gas off. Within seconds, a large amount of smoke started pouring out of grill, then flames. Flames quickly went from the burner area, to the inside of the lid, to the outside of the lid and outside of the bottom of the grill. Flames quickly engulfed the gas line. I was able to get a fire extinguisher on it and get the flames put out, used the entire fire extinguisher.

The product, in the report: Gas grill part part # 8127140-0
The consumer says the manufacturer sent him an aftermarket part. He says the universal part fits. The previous part had no holes. The one that the manufacturer sent him has holes all around which makes gas leak by the gas valve. He says the burner itself is not supposed to have any holes to the rear of it, althought this one does and is making gas come out by the body of the valve. Consumer says he is afraid of using the grill because it may cause a fire. Consumer says he is having a very hard time trying to contact the manufacturer.
