The product, in the report: Playground w/ladder, slide, swings etc.

The Playground set purchased June 1st, 2004 from company on Belmont Street in Worcester. Caller was painting Playground set around May 2012 when he began noticing rotting at the base, roof, flooring inside of each box (like a tree house) and ladder. Release# 82-008 states that the company is out of business but caller states that they are a very lucrative business on Belmont Street in Worcester, MA. He is reporting as a safety hazard due to the chance of a child falling through the flooring or the play area falling over and causing the child to be injured this way. No injuries are being reported at this date. Caller has contacted the manufacturer, has been advised that they would replace the wood at his expense of $120 an hour for the first hour and then $80 each hour after that first hour. I have provided caller with phone number for Consumer Protection MA and Consumer Protection FTC

The product, in the report: Durango or Durango 2 from Adventure Playsets, purchased from Walmart.

Durango or Duarngo 2 playset already has recalls for weak support structure (monkey bars and vertical posts in main structure) but I am not sure this addresses another issue. The shear strength of the main structure is dependent on the screws going though multiple horizontal 1”x4” uncoated wood pieces into the coated vertical 2x4’s. The 1x4’s have holes pre-drilled in them very near their ends and the shear stresses on the set (from someone climbing the angled ladder, for instance) cause the end grain of the 1x4’s to tear out (the holes turn from an “o” to a “c”). The 1x4’s then can slide sideways under the screws and the entire structure can lean to the side.

No injuries from this in this case, mainly because the swingset has been “off limits” for some time.

This swingset also has a broken coated 2x4 support for the monkey bars (i.e. one of the vertical portions of the ladder).

I have ordered the monkey bar and vertical supports replacement kits.

The product, in the report: Durango Swing Set

This is regarding the ladder bars of the Durango swingset produced by Adventure Playsets, of Amarillo, Texas which you issued a recall Nov 2009. My daughter has one of these, purchased around 2006. While my daughter had several friends over for her 6th birthday, and while both swings and the glider were occupied, the wood for one of the ladder bars broke under the combined weight. The swingset did not fail completely since the plastic coating held things together. There were no injuries and we made sure nobody used the swingset.

I later noticed small mushrooms growing out of the holes in the plastic of the ladder bars. I determined the ladder bars were of a poor design, the plastic was as effective at keeping water in, rotting the wood as it was at keeping it out.

I did not know of any recall for the product, nor did I think of reporting this to the company or the CPSC. I replaced the rotted ladder bars with weather resistant lumber which I cut and drilled to match the old ladder bars.

The product, in the report: Durango swingset from Walmart

This is the Durango swingset from Walmart. My daughter was on the swing and the chain holding the swing up broke 1/2 way up and she fell on the ground. Since then the 2seated swing broke away from the screw holding it together and the board the slide is attached to has come lose and has pinched her fingers and others and now it can’t be used at all it is so lose and totally unsafe. My daughter is very easy on all her toys ( she is not a tom boy at all) and takes good care of them. I am not happy with this product and so afraid to let her or any of her friends on it. Totally unsafe.

The product, in the report: Adventure Playset Durango purchased from Walmart

In October or November of 2009 I received a replacement set of monkey bars for our Durango swingset that we purchased we kept the replacement in the box because we live in Maine and at that time of year it is cold and snowy. We figuired the longer we could keep it out of the elements the better. We put it up in the spring of 2010, we covered it for the winter in the fall of 2010 and took all necessary precautions to keep it out of the elements. We just got the swings out again this spring and the first time my boys who are not overly big swang on it the monkey bar replacement split down the middle of the wood and now the swing set is unusable again. We are so lucky that neither of them were seriously hurt when this happened. We have spent more time not using this swingset then we have using it. We feel that the company should have to not only replace the monkey bars but the whole swing set with a sturdy swing set that we do not have to fear using. This should have brought us many years of use and grown with our children. We are so disappointed in the quality of the set and that the whole swing set was not recalled. We have taken every step we could to preserve it.
