No one hurt Made Jul 1, 2025, sent to the company Jul 7, 2025, published by CPSC Jul 21, 2025
The product, in the report: Oklahoma Joe’s Canyon Combo Gas Charcoal Grill and Smoker Color: Black SKU: 142109538
My wife and I purchased an Oklahoma Joes Canyon Combo Gas/Charcoal Smoker Black from Academy Sports in May 2024. Since that time, we have experienced a serious and recurring safety issue with the gas portion of the unit.
When using all three gas burners, the flames intermittently extinguish without warning while the propane continues to flow. This presents a serious hazard, as the unburned gas accumulates in the enclosed grill chamber. On multiple occasionsonce by myself and once by my wifewe have experienced dangerous flare-ups that caused the grill lid to violently blow open upon re-ignition, due to this built-up gas.
We reported the issue to Oklahoma Joe/Char-Broil and followed all requested troubleshooting steps, including:
Purging the propane tank
Thoroughly cleaning the burners and grill
Installing a replacement gas manifold and regulator provided by the company
Unfortunately, none of these steps resolved the problem.
During our most recent communication, a Char-Broil representative insisted we switch to a 20 lb propane tank, rather than using the standard 15 lb tank provided by our local propane exchange service ([REDACTED]). At our own expense (nearly $80), we purchased a new 20 lb tank and began using it this season.
Despite this, the problem persists. Just one week ago, while using the grill with the new tank (which was still nearly full), my wife again experienced the flames extinguishing mid-cook with gas continuing to flow. When she attempted to reignite the grill, the built-up gas caused another dangerous flare-up, blowing the lid open.
At this point, we are extremely concerned that the gas side of this grill is inherently unsafe. The issue appears to be a design flawpossibly related to airflow, burner configuration, or a gas regulation failurethat allows the burners to extinguish during normal operation without shutting off gas flow.
We have cooperated fully with all of Char-Broils troubleshooting requests, yet the company continues to suggest redundant steps instead of taking responsibility for a potentially hazardous defect. We no longer feel safe using this product and are unwilling to continue risking our familys safety.
We are submitting this formal complaint to request that this matter be thoroughly investigated and addressed. We believe a recall or redesign may be warranted, and we are seeking a full resolution from the manufacturer, including potential refund or replacement with a safer alternative.
Thank you for your time and attention to this serious safety concern.

No one hurt Made Nov 19, 2020, sent to the company Dec 11, 2020, published by CPSC Dec 29, 2020
The product, in the report: Oklahoma Joe’s pellet smoker grill . Model 600 Rider pellet smoker grill
Pellet smoker grill caught fire. I’ve been in discussions with the smoker grill company about the failure of design and manufacturing of the product which has been completely manufactured in China and shipped perhaps without any oversight from them and only becoming aware of a possible problem after a great deal of failures/fires. They have only admitted that the replacement parts that failed are on back order and that they underestimated the amount of these parts that will need to be replaced. As a retired engineer and the lack of the product manufacturer to service the product I and many others have had to perform service on these products. I found the cause of the failure/fire to be the fan/auger motor assembly. The assembly motors that are found to be in these grills are not the assemblies that are outlined in their own wiring diagram. The failed units are with only one wiring terminal to operate the pellet auger feed system and none for the cooling fan on the assembly which possibly leaves the cooling fan inoperable or insufficient which leads to overheating and failure/fire of the product. They refuse to discuss my findings or even listen to the fact that the motor they keep saying is in it in fact is not the motor in the product. I’ve even sent pictures showing this to be true. They have only expressed that they need a great deal of replacement motor assemblies but thats where the discussion ends. My findings and their refusal to talk about this is in my professional opinion is a clear attempt to stonewall for liability and or safety recall reasons. In my professional career I worked directly with liability concerns as an engineer and their reactions and denials to answer my questions reflect nothing more than a coverup of perhaps thousands of defective/dangerous units.
