The product, in the report: Ecoteck (Ravelli) Pellet stove

Our home has an Ecoteck (Ravelli) Pellet stove. The model name is “Monica”. The pellet stove was operating normally when the power failed. After the power returned, the stove’s display indicated “Black – Out”. The instruction manual solution for this message is “Press the OFF button and repeat switching ON the stove”. After doing this, the display indicated “Final Cleaning” which is the message normally displayed while it is in its shutdown phase. After stove shut off, I restarted it and checked it a few minutes later. The stove interior was filled with smoke & fire, smoke was seeping from the seams of the flue inside the house and smoke was billowing outside the house from the flue. There was also a detonation of combustible gases in the flue which blew the bottom cover off the flue at the base of the stove. I opened the stove door and used a fire extinguisher to put the fire out. The fire pot was entirely filled with pellets, which apparently led to the runaway fire. I called 911 and had the fire department make sure everything was ok.

Later investigation showed that the power failure created a failure mode in which the stove’s electronic controller continuously loads pellets in the fire pot leading to a dangerous runaway fire condition in the stove’s interior. The intensity of the resulting fire is beyond the design limit of the stove and could easily have led to a structural fire in the home had I not contained it.
