The product, in the report: Masterbuilt Slow Smoker https://www.masterbuilt.com/products/masterbuilt-slow-smoker-1 Part #MB20100112
On May 17, 2022, I purchased a MB20070122 digital smoker and the MB20100112 cold smoker attachment. I ran into two problems last week: 1) Near the end of a six hour smoke, the slow and cold smoker appeared to get very, very hot. I’m not sure why the heating element got so hot, but it was enough to melt the switch and wiring and threw both my GFCI and the breaker in the panel. Plugging in the slow and cold smoker now throws the GFCI. Needless to say, I cannot use it anymore. 2) I went to use the original wood hopper attachment; it appears that the latch for the cold smoker actually tore into the wood chipper housing making it unusable.
I contacted Masterbuilt right after this happened on 11/27. They got back to me after a week with no information. The only question was if I was using an extension cord. In fact, I was, but it is outdoor rated and of sufficient gauge so that it never got hot. My primary use of the extension cord is to keep the smoker away from the house.
In short: *) What happened that made you want to report? Cold smoker caught on fire and melted on/off switch *) What type of product(s) were being used? Masterbuilt Slow Smoker https://www.masterbuilt.com/products/masterbuilt-slow-smoker-1 Part #MB20100112 *) Who was using the product(s)? Me, an adult male living in the United States *) How were the product(s) being used? A three to six hour smoke for turkey breast *) Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? A fire could have caused more damage had the smoker been next to the house. Or had it caught on the grass under the smoker. *) How did any injuries occur? N/A

No one hurt Made Sep 20, 2021, sent to the company Oct 5, 2021, published by CPSC Oct 20, 2021
The product, in the report: The product is a Masterbuilt slow smoker model MB20100112 that is designed to be used as an add-on and alternative smoke source for most Masterbuilt smokers. Once fitted alongside the existing smoker, it can be used for extended smoking time instead of using the wood chip dispenser on the original smoker. Dimensions: 10.4 x 10.4 x 18 inches, weight: 9.95 pounds
My Masterbuilt slow smoker stopped working. I found that it had tripped the gfci breaker on the outlet feeding it. When I tested the power cord to the smoker with a multimeter, I found the the live and neutral power terminals were shorted to ground. I opened the smoker and saw melted wires. The internal wires to the electrical heating element have high temperature insulation, but the wires on the electrical cord powering the smoker do not. The insulation had melted and the wires were shorted together and to the housing. I contacted Masterbuilt customer service twice and only received one response stating the the smoke temperature emanating from the smoker is less than 105°C. They did not address the real problem that the power cable is held against the heating element with zip ties, causing the insulation to fail. Their power cord insulation is the incorrect type for this high temperature application and poses a shock hazard to the user once melted through. NEC table 400.4 states that thermoset insulation should be used for heater elements which this insulation is definitely not. It seems to be thermoplastic from the way it melts. Additionally, the use of this cable violates NEC article 310.15(A)(3) that states that the insulated conductor’s temperature rating may not be exceeded.

The product, in the report: Masterbuilt Electric Smokehouse Smokers
The submitter is reporting the unit for posing a fire hazard. The heating element turns automatically turns on when the unit is plugged in. He said the first incident occurred about a month ago. He turned the unit on and set it to 200 degrees. However, after a few minutes he noticed the food was burning and the heating temperature was at the max, 300 degrees. He turned the unit off and when he turned it back on the heating element went back to 300 degrees. He said now when he plugs the unit the heating element turns on by itself.
The submitter contacted the firm about a week later and reported the issue. He was told that they had never heard of this issue and informed him that the unit was not recalled. He was offered a replacement control panel and it arrived a few days later.
He installed the control panel per the firm’s instructions but the issue was not fixed. He advised the firm that the heating element was still turning on by itself but they said they could not assist further. The submitter was told he could purchase other parts or replace the unit at his expense. The submitter said he has been in contact with [REDACTED] (Case [REDACTED]).
He also indicated that he saw other reports online about this issue and he believes the firm should issue a recall.

When he pulled out the chip tray he also got a tingling sensation like he was being shocked. The smoker was in use for about 1 hour and 30 minutes before it just shut off by itself. When the product shut off the caller removed the back plate to view the wires inside and noticed that the wires were corroded and could not maintain a good connection. The product, in the report: Black electric smoker
Was using the smoker, about the 5th time since new. Its always been stored inside. I touched the door and it shocked me. Thinking it was in my head I went to unlatch the door and it shocked me pretty bad. Its dry, no rain, unit has never been wet and its virtually new. It was tripping the gfci and i thought it was just an issue with the outlet so i switched it. Apparently not and this is very dangerous with alot of other people reporting the same issues online.

The product, in the report: Masterbuilt Electric Smoker 40 “ with Smoker’s Window
I used my Masterbuilt Electric Smoker Model #20072612 for the first time. I loaded the wood chips into the chamber, inserted it into the smoker as directed and turned to drop them. A few minutes later I smelled fire. I looked and the inside of my smoker where the chamber was caught on fire. The smoker was smoking and shaking. I immediately turned off the smoker, unplugged the smoker, and put out the fire. It appears that the interior of this smoker is defective and the smoker chips did not drop where they should off but instead dropped on the burners and caught fire. I will never use this smoker again although it is almost new. I was traumatized by this incident.
