The product, in the report: chopped up tires
The surface material on the playground at Mountain View Elementary in Spearfish SD is chopped up used tires. Because of this there is a fine dust that children are breathing and getting in their eyes and on their skin. When placed in a Ziploc bag and shook for 10 seconds a fine dust covered the inside of the bag. This is called carbon black and it is not healthy or safe to be breathing in. Also this product as being used in a public school would not be appropriate for children with latex allergies, asthma or epilepsy. Also there are steel wires randomly poking out of these tire pieces. This is from the steel belted radial tires present. These steel wires are rusting and have the potential of puncturing the skin and causing blood poisoning. Not to mention getting in the eyes and doing harm. I glided a mini magnetic sweeper over the surface and came up with magnetic dust and debris including broken tiny steel wire shards. This is not healthy for children to be playing in and breathing and again the potential to get into their eyes. I checked the temperature of this surface on July 4, 2016 when the air temperature was reading 84 degrees Fahrenheit and the surface temperature of some large rubber mats were reading 143 degrees Fahrenheit and then checked the mulch and it read 135 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat is an issue increasing the chances of heat exhaustion and dehydration and the off gassing of 1-3 butadiene in the tires that comes off of the surface more with the sun on it. This also is not a safe environment for children to be playing on and breathing. I collected five pieces that have a bright yellow sticky substance on them. One had some hair wrapped around it. I brought it to a tire shop and they stated it was bead sealer which is used in the tire industry. Bead sealer doesn’t cure it stays sticky and has made its way onto the playground. This would not be a safe product to have children playing in and potentially getting it in their eyes and stuck to their skin. Also moving the top one inch layer aside I noticed the tire pieces were completely wet and foul smelling and tiny bugs with clear bodies all over running around on the scrap tire mulch. Tires contain up to 97 industrial chemicals the composition varies by brand so it varies in makeup. There is a huge list of chemicals in tires such as arsenic, cadmium, barium, lead, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons that are hazardous to humans, aquatics, and the environment.
