The product, in the report: Groundsmart Playsafe Playground Rubber Mulch 1.25 cu ft bags sold at Sam’s Club
In June of 2017, we purchased over 200 bags (1.25 cu ft) of Groundsmart Playsafe Rubber Mulch for our kids’ new play set. To our surprise, their Playground “Playsafe” Rubber Mulch had embedded metal wire and even valve stems left in it from the shredded tires. We found this out the hard way whenever we were cut by stepping or kneeling in the mulch. We contacted Sam’s Club and we were told that they would speak with their Groundsmart supplier. We were placed in contact with Groundsmart and advised to fill out a claim form that was sent to us via email. We were told to mail the claim form and the then latest piece of “Playsafe” rubber mulch with the wire in it to them directly. We showed the wire-embedded rubber mulch to our local Sam’s Club manager and then mailed it in to Groundsmart as instructed. We were told that it could take some time to track down the source of the issue and to be patient. So we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing at all! In the interim, we kept our kids busy with summer activities away from the home and had them wear shoes when in the playground area as much as possible (rather defeats the purpose of spending thousands of dollars to create a fun and safe backyard space). On September 2, 2018, my 6 year old daughter was outside swinging and her shoes came off. She stepped onto the Groundsmart “Playsafe” mulch and another piece of metal wire embedded in their mulch sliced across two of her toes underneath. She and her Autistic twin brother are now terrified of their playset area. I reached out to Groundsmart again on January 15, 2019, and received an email stating that they would check with their office to see if they have a copy of my claim form and get back to me. I have received no further communications from them as of March 1, 2019. If a product carries the name “Playsafe” and purports to be a product safe for use at school playgrounds and kids’ parks, I expect much more than this from them When you read the fine print, it says 99.9% wire free, however my experience based on the amount of metal found thus far compared to the number of bags we purchased is more than that. I am going to follow up with our Sam’s Club again. They have consistently said that they haven’t heard anything, but I notice that they are selling the same bags of mulch again. Since I did show them the piece that I sent to Groundsmart before mailing it off (and the manager was able to identify to me exactly what the metal was), it is my hope that Sam’s Club is not complicit in this. I truly want to believe that they value the safety of not just their members, but of all children, over the profits from selling dangerous bags of shredded tires under the name “Playsafe”.
