The product, in the report: Weber Stephans 22 inch charcoal kettle grill

I just received a new charcoal grill as a birthday present. It has only 1 handle on the bottom half of the kettle making it impossible to pick up the whole grill at once to move it without actually putting one hand on the potentially hot metal of the kettle itself and risking serious burns.

This is a serious safety defect in your product. Every model of this grill I have had up until now going all the way back to the 1970s has had 2 handles on the bottom half of the kettle.

The product, in the report: Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22”

Purchased Weber Original Kettle Premium Charcoal Grill 22” four years ago. The fasteners that connect the three legs to the kettle seemed flimsy, but I installed them per the directions. They did not hold up. My wife moved the grill on April 13, 2021 and the front leg collapsed because the fastener had deteriorated. The force of the kettle lid falling onto her hand (she was holding the handle) BROKE HER FINGER. I checked the remaining legs and the fasteners had also deteriorated, providing no solid support between the three legs and the kettle. POOR DESIGN AND AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN.

The product, in the report: Weber Smokefire EX4 pellet grill

Weber Smokefire EX4 pellet grill does not control fire or temperature safely. Temperature goes way high and pellets fall into grease, causing hugh fire in grill. Also, pellets back up on feed slide and catch fire outside of fire box. Many reviews on Amazon report similar experiences.

The product, in the report: Weber 15502001 Performer Deluxe Charcoal Grill, 22-Inch, Copper

I had cooked steaks on the grill approximately 5pm on the evening the fire happened. When finished cooking, I closed the lid and the top and bottom vents. I had turned the gas off before I started cooking the steaks. I went to put the grill up approximately 8pm after it had cooled, but noticed a flame from the vent hose hole between the gas regulator and the grill. I moved the regulator knob to make sure it was all the way off. It was turned off all the way. I opened the valve to try to close the valve again. When I opened the valve again, it blew the flame into the grill. The grill was apparently full of propane from the regulator leaking by. Large flame and explosion. Blew the lid off. Burned me. Burned my house.

Dangerously Hot Glass-Reinforced Nylon Lid Handle - Weber Smokey Joe 14” Charcoal Grill

In September 2014, I bought a new Weber Smokey Joe 14” basic model to replace a 20-year old one as I was moving out-of-state. I was using the new one for the past few months without a problem. However, I recently bought the Weber coal Chimney Starter and tried it 2 nights ago. The coals heated up very quickly and I grilled meat with the lid off. Then I put slices of bread w/cheese on top on the grill and put the lid on for no more than one minute (to melt the cheese on the bread). When I went to take off the lid, the handle was so hot that I burned my hand and instinctively flung the grill cover away. It could have hit my feet/legs and I could have had serious burns.

I’ve written to Weber about this on their company website. However, I received their response today saying “Sorry to hear about that accident you had with your grill...The use of a heat-resistant BBQ mitt or glove is recommended when operating the grill. These warnings are outlined in the owner’s manual for your grill.”

Following Weber’s response, I have accessed several websites to read consumer complaints about this product and this same issue of the overheated handle has been noted since 2010. How can the company continue to ignore this?

Please note: I also own the Original Series large Weber kettle grill that my family received from [REDACTED] in 1976. Importantly, this original grill has a wooden handle. I continue to use this 40-year old grill and have never had an issue with burning my hands on the handle.

The product, in the report: Weber Kettle Grill

I was rolling my 26 1/2 inch Weber Kettle grill and it collapsed to the ground. The supports that hold the legs to the grill had rusted away. I bought the grill 4/8/14 and it fell apart 6/1/15 They said they had never heard of this happenng before at Weber.

This grill also had a issue with the leg falling out of the same little supprt bracket that rusted out when I first got the grill. Weber sent a new leg kit. I did a google search and other people have had this same problem. Some using screws to secure the legs in so they do not fall out of the support bracket the legs attach 2.

The product, in the report: Weber One-Touch Silver Charcoal Grill 221/2 inch, serial number AU

The handles on Weber Charcoal Grills either absorb or conduct heat and become too hot to handle. This issue is the result of a design flaw in the grill top. Formerly these handles were made of wood which did not create a safety hazard. However, because of the need to label these handles with county of origin (this is what the customer service representative reported) they are now made of a different material which becomes too hot to handle with ones hands. This issue is not random or inconsistent but happens whenever these grills are used. My experience result in three burned fingers and a dropped grill cover causing minor product damage.

These handles are not merely warm but too hot to handle causing burns.

After speaking with the customer service representative I was told to use a glove or pot holder in the future.

This issue is easy to resolve with a handle that does not absorb the heat from the grill. In fact such a handle did exist when they were made of wood.

    11 August 2013 [REDACTED]

[REDACTED] V .P. of Customer Service Weber Stephen Products, LLC 90 West Hillcrest Blvd. Schaumburg, 11. 60195

    Dear [REDACTED]:

I was referred to you by one of your on-line phone customer service representatives. Last evening, while using my recently purchased, One-Touch Silver charcoal grill 22 Yz” (serial number AU purchased at the Green Thumbers in Davenport Iowa on 5.11.13), I lifted the lid to remove the meat and burned my hand. Three fingers were burned as I tried to escape the heat from the handle. The lid was dropped causing a minor amount of damage to the lid.

It is clear that this handle conducts heat or absorbs heat to a level that cannot be tolerated by your customers.

The purpose of this letter is to call your attention to this very serious design flaw and to correct the issue. I did a search of the internet and this issue is common among your customers. It is absolutely amazing to me that a company like Weber that manufactures products that get hot, would design a handle that conducts or absorbs intolerable levels of heat.

I spoke to two customer service representatives. The first representative indicated that I should wear a glove or use a pot holder. This hardly seems like an appropriate design solution. The second service representative indicated that this has been a known issue for some time. She added that 5 or 6 years ago Weber discontinued the use of wood handles as there was a country of origin issue related to the labeling of the handles.

I can only conclude that you have cut corners to save on product costs putting your customers at risk. From my perspective it is unthinkable that a manufacturer in good conscience could allow this known product defect to exist. These grills are not highly engineered products - a simple solution is available. The risk of injury is not random but rather it is known and expected! When injuries can be significant and the cost of fixing the problem insignificant, the solution seems obvious.

I look forward to your response.

    Very truly yours, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: 22.5” dia. Black, Weber Charcoal grill with glass filled nylon handles.

PRODUCT: Weber Charcoal Grill with glass filled nylon handle on lid. While the instructions (fine print) instruct one to use a mitt, I think reasonable person would assume that the handle provides some insulating value. It does not. I touched it lightly and dropped the lid but burned my fingertips. If someone gripped it tightly without a mitt (seemingly impossible based on space limitations), a serious burn would be the result. In the past, the metal handles were covered with wood. I don’t believe the average consumer is going to realize that the glass filled nylon handles are heat conductors. I reside in Warsaw, IN. The incident happened in Waterloo, IA. Both are the same Weber Charcoal grill.

The product, in the report: Weber Performer Gold 22-1/2” Charcoal Grill in Black

I had recently purchased a Weber Performer Gold grill from Home Depot and was using it for the very first time. I removed the lid and stored it on the storage bar on the lower half of the grill. I removed the upper grate and poured charcoal ([REDACTED] [REDACTED] charcoal, which does not require liter fluid) into the grill. I ignited the charcoal and it flamed upped and I walked away to allow the charcoal to burn down. Shortly thereafter, I detected the order of burning plastic and turned toward the grill. I noticed the charcoal was still flaming up, but I also noticed the two plastic standoffs on the lid storage bar were on fire. I immediately closed the lid on the grill to smother the flame, however the standoffs were still burning, so I put them out with a glass of water. I am reporting this because when I called Weber they only offered to send me two replacement plastic standoffs and said they would report it, however there was no genuine concern that this was a real issue and the representative said a couple times this has never happened before, coming across as though they thought I was not being truthful about what had occurred.

The product, in the report: Weber One-Touch Gold_18_22 062811 charcoal grill, 22.5”. I believe the Weber part number is 751001.

I received 1st degree burns when I lifted the lid on a hot Weber One-Touch Gold 22.5” grill. I have used this type of grill for decades with no problems. The older design of this product used wooden inserts on the handle. These never got hot to the touch. The new design uses plastic instead of wood. The plastic gets VERY hot. I emailed Weber about this several days ago. I have not heard from them.
