The product, in the report: Pellet grill by Traeger, Silverton model. Black

On August 29 I cooked two salmon fillets on my new Traeger Silverton grill from Costco. This was the second time that I used this grill, I cooked the same items a week prior without a problem. I put the grill on “smoke” for about an hour, then turned it up to 350 degrees for the final 15 minutes of cook time. About 10 minutes after turning it up, I could see smoke pouring from the grill and heard noises coming from it. I opened the lid and flames were shooting out several feet. I shut the lid and turned the grill off, but it was still on fire. I opened the lid again pulled the salmon out, I had about 15 guests at my home and people were screaming. The fire eventually extinguished. The next several weeks were spent with innumerable calls to Traeger, they were completely unphased regarding the description of the fire. They finally agreed to replace this grill with an identical one, (after first offering to just replace the “burnt” parts, but truly did not care about the REASON the fire happened in the first place. So I then called and spoke with the Costco rep for Traeger, [REDACTED] (Sept 23, 2019) and described the grill fire. This resulted in a call the following day from [REDACTED] in the Escalation Department at Traeger. I spent about an hour on the phone with him, taking the Pellet grill apart and texting photos of the burnt parts. I was naive in believing that they would be honest, but this was just a ploy to lay blame elsewhere. [REDACTED] decided that the fire was my fault and there was no defect in the grill design. He told me that the aluminum foil on the drip pan had a wrinkle in it, and that the aluminum drip liner (supplied by Traeger), had a wrinkle or fold which caused the fish grease to pool and catch on fire. First of all, the aluminum drip liner was so badly burned from the fire and was so distorted and charred as a result, there was no way to determine just how it was installed. The steel grill topper that I use for fish was also distorted and bent from the high heat of the fire, that was how hot it was. The tiny “wrinkle” in the aluminum foil could not have been the cause, so absurd! [REDACTED] (Traeger) sent [REDACTED] (Costco) an email essentially letting him know of his results. I spoke with both [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] today (Oct 7, 2019), they are both happy to put the cause of the fire on the wrinkle in the aluminum foil and liner creating the pooling of grease which ultimately caused the fire. How absurd! Here is what I know: 1) I have had a Traeger grill for about 5 years and have cooked this same item on it hundreds of times without incident, I am not new to this. I’ve lined the drip pan with heavy aluminum foil for years without incident, wrinkles and all. 2) I do believe that the fire WAS caused by the pooling of grease, as there was no grease flowing into the little grease bucket. But this was not a result of the little wrinkle in the aluminum foil, rather, it is a direct result of the angle (or lack of angle) on the drip pan itself. When comparing the drip pan on the new grill as compared with my old Traeger grill, the pans sit at a completely different angle. The drip pan on the new grill is almost completely flat, there is hardly an angle to it at all. On the old grill, however, there is a distinct and visible angle to the drip tray allowing any grease to freely flow into the drip bucket and preventing the “pooling” of grease, thus preventing a fire. 3) When I discussed my concerns with both Costco ([REDACTED]) and Traeger ([REDACTED) today, they were in denial and were both confident they had no responsibility. The “fix” for this defect is so easy, but imagine contacting every consumer that purchased this item for a retrofit repair to the grill....it is so much easier for them to deny there is a problem. My concern is that unsuspecting customers are currently subject to personal injury, property damage, or fatal injury as a result of this defective product. 4) Traeger was happy to send me another grill. After my first conversation with [REDACTED], he claimed that the Silverton had undergone some design changes and that I would not have a problem with the new grill. I had a handyman come out two days ago to put it together for me, and when I saw that it was identical to the one I currently have, I decided to send it back to Traeger. The freight company just picked it up a few minutes ago, and the driver told me he picks these up all the time because people are complaining that they catch on fire.
