The product, in the report: Tern GSD S00 model with the Enviolo hub, see https://www.ternbicycles.com/us/bikes/support/955 for the 1st gen model my friend has, or https://www.ternbicycles.com/us/bikes/472/gsd-s00-lx for the current gen 2 model. Tern have sold two generations of this model.
The Tern GSD 1st generation ebike S00 model with the Enviolo CVT uses a Syntace hub interface that bolts onto the frame using two M6 bolts on either side of the wheel. My friend had one of those bolts come loose and fall out, causing the wheel to move and rub against the frame. The manual requires these bolts be torqued to a certain spec, and checked at regular service intervals. I do not know how often my friend had her bike serviced, however when you do a search on the Tern GSD [REDACTED] group for “axle nut” you will see at least 5 or 6 reports from other owners of the GSD S00 model reporting loose or missing axle nuts. I haven’t had any problems with the acorn nuts coming loose from the solid axle on my [REDACTED], but the GSD is a heavier bike than my [REDACTED] bike, with different stress over the rear wheel from carrying a passenger on the bike, so I guess the vibration over time loosened the side that came off. I don’t know if they addressed the issue with the 2nd generation GSD S00 model but this is a safety issue Tern should remedy before someone or their child gets injured riding the bike. For an example see the photo on this [REDACTED] post [REDACTED]
