Emergency room Made Jun 30, 2023, sent to the company Jul 6, 2023, published by CPSC Jul 27, 2023
The product, in the report: Black, E-Bike manufacturers name is Rad Power. It was rented from St. James Boat Shop/Burton Car Rentals in Beaver Island , Michigan.
While riding an e-bicycle on level pavement, the front wheel somehow dislodged from the frame. This caused the rider to fly over the handlebars. Injuries occurred requiring an emergency room visit. The bike was being operated by my wife who sustained injuries to her face, forearms, elbows and shoulders. The bike was a rental from St. James Boat Shop/Burton Car Rentals.

The product, in the report: Rad Runner (don’t know exact model--he was on a friends bike--but I can get this information)
My son was riding on the back of a RAD ebike. The bikes had no pegs for feet and nothing coving the spokes (although they do sell them as extras. The person driving the bike hit a bump which pushed my son’s leg into the spokes while it was moving at 20 miles an hour. His foot had to be cut out of the spokes by the paramedics. He suffered a very deep cut on his leg (which almost severed his achilles tendon) and a broken tibia which required surgery.

The product, in the report: Rad Power Bikes RadMini 4 hightstep, black
I own a Rad Power Bikes RadMini 4 which is a foldable electric bicycle. The handlebars have an adjustable riser stem specifically known as “Stem - Mini with Riser” with a clamp so you can adjust the height of the handlebars. This riser stem is not supposed to separate according to Rad Power bikes support (see reply email from them regarding this below) and when I last folded it the riser stem completely separated. This bike goes to a maximum speed of 20 mph on flat pavement and it had separated during my ride I would have completely lost control and surely would have been seriously inured or killed which is the safety issue I have with this occurrence. I would suggest a safety recall on these bikes and all that use the same stem riser mechanisms.
Response from the manufacturer: “As it seems, the parts in question are actually not supposed to come apart in the way you’ve described.” and “The part you would need as a replacement is the Stem - Mini with Riser this would include the clamp as well. This part goes for $40.00 prior to shipping or taxes. If you are looking to purchase one please let me know”
Thank you,

The product, in the report: Rad Wagon 4
Rad Power Bikes’ RadWagon 4 recently has a recall out on tires. They are brand specific, so changing them is a risk to consumers, but with the company’s lack of communication and non-specified date for replacement tires (up to 3 months), many consumers are risking the old tires or risking off-size, non-brand tires. While my family has had no injuries, there are many customers telling the stories of blowouts with their kids on the bikes.

No incident, no one hurt Made Sep 24, 2022, sent to the company Sep 29, 2022, published by CPSC Oct 14, 2022
The product, in the report: RAD Power Bikes Radwagon 4. Tires are VEE 22x3 tires (both ribbed and smooth beads).
On July 9th, 2022, I purchased a very expensive Radwagon 4 from RADPowerBikes. The first week of September, I received an email stating that there was an issue with the rim strip in the wheels that could cause tire blowouts. I was told to stop riding the bike. On 9/8/22 I received a follow-up email from RAD indicating that after further investigation, they’ve discovered that certain tires are defective. They indicated that only the ribbed-bead tires were impacted, and that the smooth-beaded tires were not a safety concern. So I installed a smooth-beaded tire on my bike. Today I discovered that the SMOOTH-beaded tire also has a dangerous crack in it. RAD is not being forthcoming with their customers, and in fact have gone out of their way to inform owners of smooth-beaded tires that they are safe to ride, when in fact they are defective as well. Additionally, I was told today by a RAD store representative that due to the fact that I installed aftermarket brakes on my bike that are safer than the stock brakes, that my warranty is now void, and RAD will not offer a full refund of my bikes plus the components I purchased. Brakes have no impact on this tire safety issue. RAD is actively trying to get out of refunding these purchases by claiming that warranties are void due to aftermarket parts.
Because of this issue, I have now spent over $100 on replacement tires, and countless hours of my time working to resolve this issue. RAD has asked us to cease using this product for 2-3 months while they work on producing new tires. They have been unable or unwilling to offer other aftermarket replacement solutions to their tires while they sort out their vendor’s production issues.
So now a bunch of Radwagon owners have $2,000+ lawn ornaments gathering dust in garages. Not to mention how are they going to properly test new tires produced in a matter of months? I have no confidence they will be able to ship and install safe new tires in a matter of 2-3 months.

The product, in the report: Rad Power Bikes Rad Wagon 4 electric cargo bike
Rad Power Bikes Rad Wagon 4 electric bicycle is marketed for the transport of children. With less than 70 miles on it the tires are failing with significant cracking on the sidewall on both front and rear tires.
Rad is now saying that only some times are impacted (their description does not match my experience) and that only bikes delivered after June ‘22 are impacted (mine is from March ‘21 and is impacted).
This bicycle is unsafe to ride and the company is doing everything possible to not take responsibility for their product.

The product, in the report: Rad Wagon 4 e assist bike. Orange, one size, and purpose is to move families around town.
While our Rad Wagon 4 was parked in our living room the back tire exploded. It scared both of my toddlers, my wife, and I. This was shortly after we used the bike in Central Park NYC going upwards of 22 MPH. When I called customer support they said I should have received an email. I did not receive an email. They only emailed purchases after June 1, 2022. We purchased on May of 2022. In the email they said not to ride the bike( I was able to find copies of it on [REDACTED]). This is dangerous and I suggest all Rad 4 wagon bike owners be notified. I am luckily no one got hurt.

The product, in the report: The bike is a Rad Power Radwagon. It is Orange in color, and is an electric cargo bike. The bike has proprietary 22 inch x 3 inch bicycle wheels that are only used on this bike. The tires for this proprietary wheel are produced by Vee tire Co. specifically for Rad Power, and they bear Rad Power’s logo on the sidewall of the wheel itself.
I recently purchased a Rad Power Radwagon (a cargo ebike). It was delivered via mail to my home on Saturday, August 27. After receiving this ebike, I joined a dedicated [REDACTED] group, where I read reports of other Radwagon riders who had experienced tires splitting on the sidewall near the tire bead causing the inner tube to burst. This is a product that is marketed as a replacement for the minivan, with child cushions and child seats sold to carry multiple children on the back of this bike. Today, three days after receiving my bike and after putting a mere 15 miles on the odometer (electric bikes have integrated odometers that indicate how many miles it has been ridden for), I noticed that the tire is already beginning to split near the tire bead. The tire could blow at any time while riding the bike. It is unsafe to ride this with my daughter sitting on the back, which is the primary purpose for which I purchased the bike and one of the principle selling points that Rad Power markets the bike for.

I purchased a brand new electric cargo bike from Rad Power Bikes in June of 2022. Within 2 months and less than 100 miles cracks started to appear on the sidewalls of the tires. I have read numerous reports of the tires failing and I think this is a safety issue as I regularly transport my 7 year old and 20 month old on the bike.

The product, in the report: Rad Power Bikes RadWagon4 cargo e-bike, black.
I purchased an electric cargo bike from Rad Power bikes: the RadWagon 4. The purchase cost more than $2500, and arrived with components of lesser quality than those advertised on their website. After just 3 miles, my front tire experienced a blowout on clean, smooth, dry pavement, while my children aged 7 and 4 were riding on the bicycle in the passenger position, in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation. When ordering, I purchased a passenger cage known as a caboose, which was the only thing preventing serious injury to my children in the resulting crash after the tire’s failure. The three of us suffered some bruises and abrasions from the tumble. I tried contacting Rad Power Bikes via their customer service number on three consecutive days, and spent 4 hours 51 minutes in total on hold at their toll-free number without ever speaking to a human. I was forced to replace the stock tires with upgraded tires at my own cost, as recommended by another customer who’d experienced a similar issue. The tires that come with this product are routinely failing/blowing out for many customers. They are unsafe to ride and can cause injury to the rider and passengers. Please issue a recall notice and force the retailer to provide a safe alternative tire that does not blow out.

The product, in the report: Rad Power Bikes Radwagon 4 with 24” tires manufactured by Vee Tire specifically for the 4 series.
While using my RAD Power Bikes Radwagon 4 the rear tire blew out, due to a very common sidewall failure, at 20+ miles per hour causing the tube to escape the rim and tangle in the frame locking up the tire. If I were a less skilled rider this could have caused me to wreck, if it was a front tire I would have wrecked. [REDACTED]. My tires were properly inflated to 55 psi as stated on the sidewall of the tire.

No one hurt Made Jul 30, 2022, sent to the company Aug 2, 2022, published by CPSC Aug 16, 2022
The product, in the report: Rad Power Bikes/Vee 22” bicycle tire
I purchased a Rad Power Bikes RadWagon 4 cargo ebike for ~$2,000 in October 2021. This bike is marketed by Rad Power Bikes specifically for having special, custom sized tires (22” -- a unique size for bicycles) made only for Rad Power Bikes through Vee Tire. These tires can only be obtained through Rad Power Bikes and these cannot even be obtained through Vee Tire. After riding the bike for less than 1,300 miles, the rear tire had a blowout. On closer inspection of the tire, I discovered that the sidewall had split (approximately 2”) right at the bead, resulting in the inner tube bulging through the slit and cutting the inner tube on the sharp edge of the slit. When I searched for this problem on the internet, I was surprised to actually find out this problem is rather commonplace with these specific tires. I contacted Rad Power Bikes support (since the bike was still under warranty), but was told that Rad Power Bikes warranty does not cover tires. I argued that these are very proprietary tires that are obviously defective since it is happening to so many fellow RadWagon 4 bike owners. They never responded back and simply closed the trouble ticket in their system. When further investigating this split, just pushing it with my finger cause the split to double in size. It was tearing/separating like a zipper being unzipped. Also, on closer inspection of my front wheel, the same problem is starting to happen at the bead of the front tire.
I have seen recent posts in RadWagon 4 online forums where new 22” Vee tires are of a different design. Clearly Rad Power Bikes and Vee Tire are both aware of this issue or why would they change the tire design (when the tire is only used on this one model of bicycle)?
Rad Power Bikes needs to accept responsibility for this problem and recall/replace these tires. This bicycle is specifically marketed for its unique tires, as well as specifically marketed for riding with children passengers. This bike is capable of achieving speeds of up to 25mph (even faster going downhill). If those tires were to fail while someone was riding this bike that fast (especially with children passengers), the end results could easily result in injury to include being life-threatening (or worse). These tires need to be recalled and replaced immediately.

I bought a $3000 electric cargo bike from Rad Power bikes: the RadWagon 4. After riding 120 miles, the rear tire bead peeled from the tire and caused a blowout. The standard tires that come with this product are routinely failing/blowing out for a majority of customers. They are unsafe to ride and can cause injury to the rider and children passengers (mine has a bike seat for my 18 month old and 7 year old, which is common). No one hurt Made Jul 1, 2022, sent to the company Jul 18, 2022, published by CPSC Aug 1, 2022
The product, in the report: RadPower Bikes RadRover 6 Model
Manufacturer: RadPower Bikes, a US-based electrical bicycle maker Model: 2022 RadRover 6 Step-thru ebike Product at fault: 48 volt removable battery Problem: battery short circuit Cause: user can inadvertently cross the 48 volt contacts of the charging port with a metallic object Situation: the battery is secured within the bike frame with a lock. To remove the battery, a key is used to unlock the latch mechanism which is less than three inches from the charging port. The charging port has a rubber-like flap to weatherproof it but it is still possible to touch both port contacts with the key or any tool or metal object causing a short. Doing so results, in an alarming and loud spark that is a safety hazard. This also renders the battery unusable. At nearly 80 pounds, the bike is difficult to pedal and use without battery assistance, which is the point of ownership - assisting the user with battery power. The battery retails for $600 on the RadPower website, https://www.radpowerbikes.com/collections/replacement-parts/products/rad-semi-integrated-battery-pack. Questions: Why isn’t this circuit better protected, perhaps with a quick acting fuse and reset button? Why is the charge port so close to the lock? Why isn’t the charge port on the opposite side of the battery to prevent this from happening? Why isn’t the charge port’s contacts more deeply recessed to lessen the chance of crossing the circuit? Could the prongs on a woman’s ring or other piece of jewelry cause a short to occur? Could a child mimicking a parent connecting the charger to the bike cause the same occurrence?
------------------------------------------------------------ Below is a warning from RadPower on this issue: Please make sure to follow proper charging processes whenever you charge your batteries. Not Following this process has a high chance of damaging the Battery and could void the battery warranty. When you charge your battery, it is very important that you first plug the charger into the battery, then plug the charger into the wall. When done charging, unplug the Outlet first, then the Battery. Not following this order has a very high chance to blow the internal charging fuse. The use of a surge protector though not required, is also highly recommended. Note: Do not put any metal or electrically conductive objects near the charge port other than the proper end of the charger plug. Note: You may receive an email saying that your issue has been resolved but please note that you can reply to this email thread at any time to reopen this inquiry and get help from me or another Product Support Specialist - closing the inquiry is simply a formality in our system. --------------------------------------------------------------------
It seems to me that RadPower acknowledges this occurrence. However, they admit no guilt to their faulty design. When I filed my claim with RadPower that my battery would no longer charge, they had the above disclaimer all ready to send to me. In fact, the service representative I spoke with was very familiar with this issue, proving to me that this is a continuing problem. My bike is only four months old so it is the latest version.

No one hurt Made Dec 16, 2020, sent to the company Jan 8, 2021, published by CPSC Jan 26, 2021
The product, in the report: Rad Power Bikes RadRunner 1 ebike and passenger package with Kendra K-rad tire (20x3.3), manufactured and marketed by Rad Power Biles, radpowerbikes.com
I purchased a RadRunner 1 from Rad Power Bikse along with the passenger package for the bike (early Nov, 2020). The bike is marketed as being able to carry up to 300 lbs of rider and passenger load. With me (150 lbs) and a passenger (120 lbs) the bike went only a short distance before the back tire blew off the rim. Upon changing the tube, I noticed the stock tire is rated for a maximum load of 198 lbs. The front tire is the same. Since the bike weighs about 70 lbs. a non-engineer may mistakenly believe that leaves 300 lbs for a rider and passenger. But an engineer would understand the load for bike, rider and passenger is not evenly distributed between the wheels. My estimate is that 2/3 of bike and rider weight is on the back wheel and the entire passenger weight is on the back wheel. So, with a 150 lb rider, that leaved less than 60 lbs available for passenger weight within the load limit for the back tire. This limit is not noted in the marketing for the bike and passenger package, in fact, the marketing shows 2 adults as rider and passenger.
