Hurt, no treatment Made Oct 23, 2014, sent to the company Oct 31, 2014, published by CPSC Nov 18, 2014
The product, in the report: Phantom X folding frame electric bike, 500 watt rear wheel motor with 26 inch tires, front shocks, disk brakes, 8 speed gears.
I was riding my electric bike down a paved street when the folding frame cracked at the weld connecting the front part of the frame to the hinge that was still attached to the rear part of the frame. While I was able to coast onto the sidewalk, the bike split in half before I could stop so I was still moving about 8mph. I suffered cuts and bruises on my right arm, stomach and ankle. This bike was well maintained and had about 2300 miles on it, mainly street riding and paved bike paths. I contacted the company on 7/28/14 and sent a customer service representative [REDACTED] the photos of my bike, but not of my injuries. The company response was to send my an upgraded full frame, not folding and I would have to transfer the existing parts to the new frame. I did not get the name of the witness who saw my crash, so I have not pursued legal action. At this time I am trying to warn riders of this bike of the potential danger, since the company has not sent any warnings so far to registered owners like myself. They posted an updated manual on their website noting that the frame could crack on this bike, but they do not notify registered owners of this, for obvious reasons.
