The product, in the report: York LY8S080A12UH11C natural gas furnace
The pressure switch on my furnace failed, such that it would be stuck open circuit even when the draft inducer was running. However, the furnace still ignited and ran the burners for about a minute before shutting down. It did this a few more times before locking out. The furnace should not have ignited the burners at all in this case, because had the pressure switch been open because of a failure of the draft inducer or an obstruction in the exhaust pipe, it could have released combustion byproducts such as carbon monoxide into the living space.
Additionally, as a troubleshooting step, I temporarily short-circuited the pressure switch, and I discovered that a pressure switch stuck closed does not cause a lockout. If I leave the furnace powered on and remove the short circuit, the furnace starts operation immediately. In this case, the furnace should have recognized a faulty pressure switch and locked out until reset. If instead the pressure switch had failed by being stuck closed, and then suddenly opened for some reason, the furnace could possibly operate with an unreliable pressure switch.
