No one hurt Made Jul 10, 2015, sent to the company Dec 2, 2015, published by CPSC Dec 16, 2015
The product, in the report: Natural Gas Furnace Gas Valve
EF32CW233 (unidentified code on gas valve label)
Furnace Information: Manufacturer: BDP Company, division of Carrier Corp. / Payne; Model: 518A024CC: Serial: 0481C53379; Product Number: 518A00O24OOOMAAA)
12/02/13 (Approximately) - The consumer states that shortly after purchase of the gas valve, she noticed that it was malfunctioning. The gas valve sounded different than the original gas valve that came with her furnace. She contacted the installer and was informed that because it is a different valve, it is expected to sound different. The gas valve made clunking and banging noises, and sometimes sounded normal. Every fourth or fifth time, it would make a tap-tap sound, tor a clicking and scraping sound before the usual “pop” sound right before the furnace fired up.
The consumer contacted the installer again and arranged for an inspection. When the installer came over, the unit was not making its usual and irregular sounds and so the installer deemed no hazard. He listened to it cycle 3 or 4 times which took 7 minutes each, while the front door was open. The consumer thinks the outside noise of cars going by may have hindered detection of normal sounds.
The consumer states that it continued to make different and more irregular sounds as time went by; this is when the consumer started taking notes of what she heard as it was hard to keep up with all the different noises.
12/10/13 (Approximately) - The consumer states that the gas valve to the furnace started spewing gas continuously as it smelled like gas in its surrounding location. It was very sudden and was a massive amount of gas immediately after the loudest pop.
The consumer believes she may have purchased the product defectively. The consumer has not used the furnace ever since gas was being spewed. The consumer indicates that she has been using space heaters since then.
The consumer has no injuries nor previous incidents to report. The consumer believes this product poses a safety hazard. The consumer plans on contacting the manufacturer. The consumer changed her mind and did not contact the manufacturer.
