The product, in the report: Trane XV95 Furnace. Model Number TUH2B080A9V3VBA. Serial Number 19033S1C2G.

I have a home that was built in 2019 and the original Trane XV-95 furnace was installed during original construction. Within 7 years the furnace has failed with a significant crack in the heat exchanger. An HVAC professional informed me that these heat exchangers are notorious for cracking and that homes with these furnaces are unsafe because the crack will allow carbon monoxide to leak into the ventilation system of the home. Replacing the heat exchanger leaves me with a furnace that has a known faulty part that is likely to fail again, even when properly maintained, within a few years. This furnace is not safe due to the likelihood of failure of the heat exchanger. I’ve attempted to contact Trane to resolve but they are unresponsive. 22 days after I submitted a request for resolution to Trane under warranty, my case is still unassigned. I attempted to call to get more information and did not get any more information, just that it was still unassigned and they will reach out to me when it is assigned to a case manager. I need to get the furnace replaced in my home before the weather cools so I can safely heat my home and keep my family and pets safe and this delay is unacceptable.

The product, in the report: Trane Gas Furnace; Model Number: TUD2C100A95VBB; Series: XV80 / Variable Speed; Heating Capacity: 100,000 BTU; Efficiency: 80% AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency); Configuration: Upflow / Horizontal; Fuel Type: Natural Gas; Blower Type: Variable-speed motor

I am reporting a critical safety mechanism failure on my Trane XV80 Furnace (Model: TUD2C100A95VBB / Serial Number: 19263T2TGG). On February 17, 2025, my home filled with a strong odor of natural gas, prompting an emergency response from the [REDACTED] Fire Department and [REDACTED]. The unit was “red-tagged” by responders as an immediate explosion hazard and taken out of operation.

The furnace’s Integrated Furnace Control (IFC) board failed to initiate a “hard lockout” after consecutive unsuccessful ignition attempts in a 24-hour period. This unit was used for its intended residential heating purpose and was professionally maintained by Service Specialties Inc. twice annually since installation in July 2019. The ignitor was replaced during a routine inspection in October 2025. However, on February 17, the ignitor failed again, and instead of shutting down the gas valve as designed, the IFC board entered a continuous ignition loop lasting nearly a full day. During each cycle, the gas valve opened and released unburned natural gas into the home.

A service technician confirmed the hardware failure the following day and replaced the ignitor for a second time in four months. While no physical injuries occurred, there was a high potential for a catastrophic explosion or fire due to the accumulation of gas. This represents a life-safety failure of the primary protection meant to prevent the build up of combustible fumes.

The product, in the report: I have a 15 year old Trane XV80

I’m using a gas furnace by Trane. After a routine inspection, the tech found cracks in the heat exchanger which can cause carbon monoxide to leak into the house. The part is covered by a warranty HOWEVER the labor to fix is $2500-3000 which is not economical for most families. The tech made a comment (and showed me photos) about this problem being very common, stating that he sees it weekly on units much newer then mine. I did a [REDACTED] search and discovered the same, so I then called around to several heating and cooling places and they all mentioned this was typical with units as young as 3 years old but super common with those in the 10 year age. I asked 3 different companies if they were aware of any recalls and they all said no. Of course when the labor nets these companies a few thousand dollars, they have no real incentive to report it either. This is essentially a public health crisis that is hiding in plain sight. Either the techs find this problem to scare people into getting a new furnace or the problem is real and defective products are just out there slowly poisoning people. Worse is that its a failure of a warrantied component yet repairs is so costly, families have to risk the consequences. I sincerely hope that someone will investigate how common of an issue this is.

I have a furnace with MN TUH1C100A9481AA. I called Trane, they said call the dealer. Called the dealer said it would have to wait until next week. Meanwhile I have a short in my system (furnace) that blew my control board and could have started a fire. What would I or should I do next? Please advise? I would think this is important/critical/an emergency.

The product, in the report: Trane Model XC80

Last march I purchased a new Trane XC80 furnace and Air Conditioner and had it installed. Since I live in phoenix we just started the heating season 3 weeks ago. Due to a design issue with my house the furnace was not able to draw in enough air to meet its needs and overheated and melted itself. The unit with less than 3 weeks of use is now not serviceable and will need to be replace at the cost of several thousand dollars. Also when I came home and the house was cold I checked the thermostat and it was blank so I went to the attic and saw flames inside the furnace. I turned off the gas and the electricity to the unit and called the repair company. If I had not returned home when I did there is a chance the entire house could have burned down. Today they informed me that the unit would need to be replaced and this was not covered under warranty. If the unit had had a overtemperature sensor that shut down the unit and issued a trouble code, I could have solved the air flow issue within a hr and put the unit back into service. Now I have to wait several weeks and spend quite a bit of money to have the unit replaced.

8/2019: The consumer noticed a dirty, burning-like odor in her home. She had difficulty breathing and consulted her doctor. The consumer said she has a pre-existing condition, which had not bothered her in 30 years. The doctor administered medication to assist her with her difficulty breathing. The consumer said she could not use the medication, because when she tried it, she felt a burning sensation in her chest. She has a lung disorder.

2020: The installing company, sent technicians out to inspect the unit, but they told her that they did not notice any odd odors. Sometime, during the year, they changed the filters on the unit. This did not help with the quality of air in her home.

10/13/2020: A different company installed a gas dryer in her home. However, the gas company had to shut off the gas in her home and they spotted an incorrect connection, which violated code, with the set-up with the consumer’s furnace. The company, who installed the dryer, picked it up and removed it from the consumer’s home.

The consumer called the furnace installing company and they modified the set-up of the pipes in her home. The gas company technician, pointed out the set-up, could have caused a fire in her home. The installer’s technician adjusted the location of the pipe, in relation to the wood and drywall in the consumer’s home.

The consumer still had problems with the air in her home and her health condition got worse. She could barely walk, became fatigued easily, and experienced a burning sensation in her lungs. 2/2021: The consumer went to the hospital, because she felt as if her lungs were on-fire.

When she returned from the hospital, she covered all of the vents in her home and began to feel better afterwards.

The consumer called the installer several times, but when their technicians came out, they said that they did not notice any problem with the odor in her home.

The consumer called the gas company and the technician who came out, shut of the gas to her home. She was told that outdoor gas sensor, was needed for proper operation of the furnace in her home.

3/2021: The consumer called the installer and they came out and installed the sensor.

Afterwards, a local state inspector came out to check the system. The consumer claims that this inspector, pushed the pipe upwards toward the ceiling and passed the system as working properly.

Later that night, the consumer had to turn off all of the lights in her home, because the lights caused her to feel ill. Later that night, she called 911 and the Fire Rescue unit came out and turned off the (TXV) gas valve in her home and transported her to the hospital.

When she returned home, she still experienced worsening health issues, when any lights were “on” in the house. This had been happening, since the furnace was installed and she has been using less lights as possible.

The consumer said that one of the inspector indicated that this TXV valve, was apparently spilling gas in her home.

The consumer still notices an oil based film on the furniture and items in her home. She tries to clean the film with a vinegar solution.
