The product, in the report: Goodman Furnace Model # GMEC960803BN and Evaporator Coil serial # 2006055954 Installed in a new home 8/2020.

My Goodman Furnace was recalled under CPSC recall number 22-021. I registered for the recall part on 1/8/22 and received the repair kit on 1/12/22. My replacement part was installed 9 months later, on 10/11/22 after numerous emails and phone calls. Since the Goodman authorized repair company installed the recall 22-021 replacement parts on my Goodman furnace - my Furnace has shut down 5 times ( 12/2/22, 12/12/22, 12/23/22, 1/6/23 & 1/26/23). I called the HVAC company that installed the recall parts and they told me to call Goodman - that they (HVAC company)have had many call backs and issues with the recall part. I called Goodman today and they told me, “there is something going on with the recall part” and they would put me back on the list for service. Please be aware that the repair kit for this fire hazard recall is not functioning correctly.

The product, in the report: Goodman gas furnace manufactured around 2011.

The drain pan under the coil in my gas furnace has now melted twice. In addition to causing water leaks that have damaged the house twice (the pan was replaced once 5 years ago, but has now melted a second time, causing the leak to re-appear). Our furnace is a Goodman and was manufactured around 2011. Our HVAC company re-assessed the problem, and documented the burning/melting in the coil pan. This burn pattern is identical to what appeared 5 years ago, clearly showing that the coils continue to burn/melt the pan.

Our HVAC technician concluded this is the exact issue that resulted in the Goodman/Daikin recall below. However, this recall only includes their furnaces manufactured between 2019-2021. Hence, despite our being a clear fire hazard and displaying the same problem as that covered under the current recall, our model is excluded from the recall. It is apparent that this problem extends to models prior to those manufactured in 2019, including ours. Given that we now know our furnace poses a fire hazard, we would hope this is investigated and the recall extended to cover homeowners like us stuck with these dangerous furnaces.

Caller is reporting that she experienced similar problems of the recall#22-021 Hazard: The molded plastic drain pan located at the bottom of the evaporator coil, when installed with a residential condensing gas furnace in an up-flow configuration, can overheat, melt, and deform, posing a fire hazard.

Caller stated that she noticed water leaking out of the furnace, which a service technician came out and replace which cost $1496. Caller stated that she would like the company to expand the recall to include her unit.

Report Update: On August 30th, I received a phone call from [REDACTED]. I am not sure if his last name or company name is correct. This is what was stated in my voicemail, but the phone number is for Goodman/Amana Homeowners Division.

[REDACTED] asked me about the problem I experienced and I explained my experience of the leaking of water from the unit when the air conditioner was running in July 2019. I explained that my technician found the problem to be a drain pan that appeared to have melted in the corner. The technician said it appeared to be defective and that he’d never seen anything like it. He replaced the drain pan (I submitted an invoice to my report previously) and I paid for it. I expressed to my technician that if something melted my drain pan, that it could happen again or cause a fire. He reassured me that the old pan was defective, and I have had it checked every six months since with no sign of melting on the new one.

[REDACTED] from Goodman proceeded to tell me that my problem happened outside the recall window and that there was nothing he could do. He then proceeded to try to gaslight me and tell me that something else must have caused this and that I needed to have my technician come back out and try to figure out the cause. I repeated to him that my technician already determined the cause to be the defect in the drain pan and that the new one has been checked every 6 months since with no issues. (I have a service contract with my HVAC company and they check my HVAC every six months if you need records of this also.) [REDACTED] from Goodman then tried to gaslight me further and tell me that these things happen all the time, to which I replied, “No they don’t”. He told me that they do, and that I should look it up on the internet. He said that there was nothing more he could do and then we ended the phone call.

I would greatly appreciate it if someone in your office could look into this further. I would like the recall expanded. My defect occurred in July of 2019, only 6 months before the current recall, and I submitted all of the details and invoice previously to CPSC. I believe my dates and model numbers should be included in the recall and that I should be reimbursed by Goodman for the repair cost that I incurred as a result of Goodman’s defective product.

The respondent (consumer’s son, [REDACTED]) reported the matter on behalf of his parents, who are listed in the report.

12/15/2019: The consumer turned the furnace on and attempted to turn it off, approximately 30 minutes later, but it could not be turned off using the control. The consumer tried to trip the breaker, but that did not stop the furnace. He ended up unplugging it from the wall outlet.

The respondent is not aware of any problems in the past and he indicated that his parents don’t use the furnace that often.

The respondent called [REDACTED] Gas and they sent out a technician. He checked the unit and turned the gas off.

The home was purchased in early 2000 and the furnace was already in there.

The furnace may be included in CPSC Recall # 01-189.

The product, in the report: Residential Natural Gas Furnace

    2016.01.21.03.58

I am a mandated reporter as a Mechanical Process Engineer. I developed manufacturing processes for 30 years and must report safety concerns.

We had (operative phrase) a Goodman forced air natural gas furnace in our home for two years. On a basement re-organization I noticed water around the base of the furnace. Thinking failed condensate (it was a 92% efficient unit so was a condensing furnace) I checked the evacuator pump which was working 100%.

Against all CO warnings I pulled the burner cover to see condensate water misting out of the seal between the recuperation coil cover and burner box. CO is potentially present in the area so I shut down the furnace, pulled the unit apart to find a very likely robot laid EPDM gasket out of place for about 10” long and 3/8” out off location on the lower right end of the panel that was to be sealed.

Heavy trails of rust showed that it had been leaking since day one, 2 years ago.

Goodman resisted at first but finally relented in installing a new furnace (100% functional now) after I threatened them with CPSC.

The where about’s of the problematic furnace is unknown and Goodman is un-responsive as to if it is being Six Sigma checked for other units of this popular furnace are out there.

That’s criminal. Safety of others at this point is my concern

I have photos, serial and model numbers as well as all communication.

    Dutifully reported, respectfully yours,

Subject: Fire and Gas Leak in Goodman Furnace

Brand: Goodman Model Number: GSK130301BA Serial Number: 1004125065 Install Date: 4-29-2010

About 7pm on January 24, 2014 my wife noticed that the furnace was not operating correctly and went into the attic to check on it. The furnace had shown these symptoms many times in January and had been checked by professionals multiple times including earlier that day so we were not surprised that there was a problem. When entering the attic she noticed that there was a natural gas smell and that the furnace was hot to the touch. She shut off the electricity to the furnace and opened up the panel. The flames coming out of the burners and it was damaging wires and other sensors inside the furnace. I helped my wife shut off the gas valve into the furnace and the fire slowly burned its self out. The fire department was notified and they sent some firefighters to check the furnace.

A short video of the fire was collected after we shut of the electricity and before we shut off the gas. Please contact me to get a copy of the video.

The main symptoms leading up to the fire has been a roll out limit switch error corresponding to 6 flashes for the diagnostic light. The furnace blower remains running all the time and the thermostat shuts off so the display is blank. The furnace was about 4 years old. It had been serviced multiple times in November and January by Advanced Heating and Air in Knoxville TN. The technicians that serviced the unit have suggested many different causes for why the furnace entered that state.

The day before the fire one technician came out to check the rollout limit error and to check for gas leaks because we had smelled gas in the attic and upstairs bed rooms. The technician could not find a gas leak and said the furnace appeared to be operating correctly. A new rollout switch was ordered. He also smelled the gas and recommended having the gas lines to the house checked.

The day of the fire another technician came to check the gas lines and conduct a pressure test and found a very small leak near where the gas enters the furnace. The said leak was really small and probably was not the cause of the gas smell. That leak was repaired.

On Saturday, the day after the fire Advanced Heating and Air sent a technician to check the furnace. He said he replicated the problem and that it was due to a sticky gas valve. That gas valve had been replaced by the same company in November and was about 3 months old.

I am concerned that multiple technicians have looked at this furnace and this problem seems to be very hard to diagnose. Additionally two gas valves have failed in this relatively new furnace and the furnace has failed in a way that is a serious safety issue. I am not convinced the technicians accurately diagnosed the problem and that replacing the gas valve AGAIN eliminates this safety problem. I will be replacing the entire furnace and I am currently talking to American Home Shield to see if I can get it replaced under the home warrantee.

Here are my notes and timeline on the recent service calls including a rollout limit switch error that occurred a year ago.

Repair Date: Jan 2013 Problem: Rollout Limit Circuit is Open (6 flashes) Solution: Adjusted Gas Flow?

Repair Date: Nov 1, 2013 Problem: Furnace Lockout Due to Excessive Number of Ignition Retries (1 flash) Solution: Ordered Gas Valve

Repair Date: Nov 8, 2013 Technician: [REDACTED] Solution: Replaced Gas Valve

Repair Date: Jan 9, 2014 Problem: Rollout Limit Circuit is Open (6 flashes) Technician: [REDACTED] Solution: No cause found. Possible problem with freezing condensation.

Repair Date: Jan 23, 2014 Problem: Rollout Limit Circuit is Open (6 flashes)/Smelled Gas Leak Technician: [REDACTED] Solution: Ordered Rollout Limit Switch / Furnace Operation Looked Fine / Could not find gas leak / Recommended house gas line check.

Repair Date: Jan 24, 2014 Problem: House Gas Line Pressure Test Technician: [REDACTED] Solution: Very small leak found near connection to furnace and repaired.

Repair Date: Jan 24, 2014 Problem: 7pm - Symptoms consistent with Rollout Limit Circuit error. Gas smell. Top of furnace was very hot to the touch. Fire found in furnace burning wires and other components even after electricity was disconnected for 5-10 minutes. Electricity and Gas to furnace shut off by owner. Damage appears limited to inside furnace. Rural Metro Fire Department called to check that unit was shut off and safe.

Repair Date: Jan 25, 2014 Problem: Inspection of damage to furnace. Technician: [REDACTED] Solution: Was able to replicate fire conditions. Said fire was due to a sticky gas valve”. Recommended replacing gas valve, rollout switches, and burnt wiring.

The product, in the report: Goodman Gas Furnace

My 6 year old Goodman gas furnace, Model GMH95073BXAA was making a strange noise so my wife called a service person. He inspected it, said the heat exchange was bad, that it was leaking CO and must be repaired - but could not fix it because he did not service Goodman models. It then completely quit working. We then called the Goodman service person (who was also the original installer) who confirmed the heat exchange was bad - there was a hole rusted through and it was apparently leaking CO. It was installed new in my home (new construction - spec) which we bought in Feb. 2007. This was a six year old furnace installed new in a brand new house. Seems WAY too early to be having a serious mechanical failure like this! I have pictures of the part that was removed from the furnace - it shows rust on more than one of the tubes, including the one with a hole in it.

I did contact Goodman. The part was replaced as part of their 20 year warranty on the heat exchange. (Still cost $790 in labor.) I think the bigger issue is the failure and possibility of CO leaking into the house. The service person checked readings on the furnace before it quit running and found a small amount of CO entering the house - most was being vented out through the exhaust vent (255 PPM).

The product, in the report: Gas furnace

Five and 0ne-half year old furnace started having operating problems-wooshing sounds and intermittent shut downs. Repair personnel discovered that tubes had disintegrated causing potentially dangerous levels of carbon dioxide to enter residence. Particulate matter was found as well as large hole in one of the pipes. Pictures are available for viewing. Per the direction of repair personnel we were instructed not to utilize heat until unit could be replaced. Outside temperatures are below freezing so replacement of furnace was necessary as parts are difficult to come by and repair costs were close to full replacement.
