The product, in the report: American Standard Freedom 90 Comfort-R Forced Hot Air Furnace

Have a six year old American Standard Freedom 90 Comfort-R furnace (forced hot air). Came home and spelled buring plastic. Called the fire department. They identified that part of the furnace had caught fire and melted the air intake. Said it likely has happened several times. They disconnected gas and electrical and took furnace out of commission.

Subsequently, called a repair service (Cooling Unlimited, Reading MA). They identified that the “gas valve” likely was not closing properly, and was able to reproduce similar issue. I.e. they saw backfire in the gas inlet tubes, where there should be no backfire. Said he had seen this one time before. Valve was replaced by us, but was not covered by any warranty.

I have retained defective gas valve and melted parts. Seems dangerous.
