The product, in the report: Carrier Comfort 95% AFUE Gas Furnace
Carbon monoxide alarm was triggered during the night. We were not home at the time and a neighbor called 911. An investigation determined that the source of the CO was the furnace. A service technician determined that the exhaust vent on the furnace was blocked with ice, and the pressure switch safety feature in the furnace had failed.

The product, in the report: gas furnace
The thermostat which controls the furnace turns blank. The consumer had to trip the circuit breaker, in the basement to turn it back on.
The problem happens ever other day. He has to trip the breaker each time and check it, to ensure the thermostat was working again.
He saw that there are class action suits and other issues related to this brand, only.
The consumer has a carbon monoxide detector in his home, but it did not alarm for during any of these incidents.
1/9/2023: The consumer had a technician come out to his home today. The technician pointed out that the unit emits approximately 1 or 2 ppm. He also said that the heat exchanger needs to be replaced. The cost would be approximately $5600.00 for parts and labor.
When the consumer places their hand on the furnace, it is hot to the touch.
The consumer said the beginning of his model number is mentioned on-line, in the link below. [REDACTED]
1/9/2023: The consumer called the manufacturer and reported the problem to them, but their office was closing for the day, and he was advised to call back the next day. He was also assigned a manufacturer’s CASE# [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: Carrier Home Furnace, Model 58CTX090-16, Serial number 1912A18166, Series 140, Mfg May 2012, light greenish in color
Furnace made a poof sound. Thermostat display was blank. In a few minutes, went to garage to check. Furnace was off, but there was a burning smell and furnace panel was hot. Took off furnace panel and stickers inside were burning/melting. All 4 burners had flames about 3 inches tall. Turned off power to it -- burners still stayed lit! Had to turn off gas. Called a service place. They came out and determined the gas valve had stuck OPEN! The resulting heat also melted some transformer wires. Cost us $1000 to repair. If I hadn’t happened to be home at the time, we could have easily had a fire or a gas explosion. Furnace is a Carrier, Model 58CTX090-16, Serial number 1912A18166, Series 140, Mfg May 2012. I have the defective gas valve and would like to send it to Carrier, but they’re such a big company I don’t know how to get it to them.

The product, in the report: gas furnace
Between March and April, the consumer noticed that his wife was coughing. The consumer was also having issues with his feet. They were feeling weird and swelling.
Around the first of April the consumer noticed a rubber or burning smell in the home. On May 9, the consumer was outside of the home and there was a smell of gas. The consumer called the gas company who came out immediately. The problem was with the heat exchange in the furnace. The consumer contacted the furnace company, who also came out on May 11 and condemned the furnace.
The consumer checked on line and saw that there was a class action suit in 2007 in reference to the secondary heat exchange but he was never notified.
The consumer check online and found out that the issues that he and his wife were having were symptoms of being exposed to polycarbonates in the furnace.
No medical attention was required.

No one hurt Made Nov 13, 2017, sent to the company Mar 6, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 20, 2018
The product, in the report: Residential gas heating system (heat exchanger)
We installed a Carrier gas furnace (Model 58MV). In March it stopped working and after 6 service calls from 2 different Carrier service companies (and a replaced fan and motherboard), we were told that the problem is with a heat exchanger that has been known to fail and possibly lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. Here is one of many articles from HVAC companies about it: https://www.aircoheating.ca/safety-notice-carrier-heat-exchangers/
When the technician came to our house, he turned off the gas on our unit because he suspected a leak. Carrier has not recalled this product despite the known issues and safety concerns.
While the heat exchangers are covered under warranty, it does not cover the repair, for which we received an estimate of $2300. To replace the unit would be $4,460.00+tax. The entire unit cost around $7,000. Without a recall and with the high cost of replacing this defective product, many people could result in harm due to carbon monoxide poisoning or worse. Please investigate this situation. Thank you.

The product, in the report: High efficiency gas furnace
The carbon monoxide alarm on our upper (sleeping) floor activated on 4/28 as a “warning”. It was old so I bought a new one that also went off at 3 pm on 4/29; the fire department was called and after much searching, the highest readings were near a basement dryer. I had the vents thoroughly cleaned within a few hours, but the alarm went off again at 3 am on 4/30. The fire department came out again and found the highest readings to be near the furnace(also in the basement); unfortunately, they didn’t take readings outside, or they would have known it was the furnace the first time. When I called a HVAC company in the morning, he informed me that he had seen several problems with high efficiency Carrier furnaces that had horizontal plastic vent pipes having faulty heat exchangers. We had no heat from Sunday to Wednesday, when a new heat exchanger was installed. Carrier will refund $325 of the $800 cost to replace the defect. I want to know why I wasn’t contacted about a recall on this furnace earlier, and, as a result, my family (including a 3 month old) was put in harm’s way.

No one hurt Made Nov 13, 2016, sent to the company Dec 14, 2016, published by CPSC Dec 29, 2016
The product, in the report: Gas Furnace
SUMMARY: our furnace firebox overheated causing air intake PVC pipe to partially burn.
We are owners of a 6-year old high-efficiency Carrier furnace (model 58MVC120-F-10120) installed in the basement of our single-family home. Recently, we began smelling something abnormal in our yard and after some investigation we realized that the smell was coming from our furnace exhaust pipe. We called a local Carrier dealer for service. When the technician took off the furnace cover we found that an intake PVC pipe inside of the furnace was partially burned on the side facing firebox. The firebox has evidently overheated and whatever safety mechanism this furnace has, it failed to shut off gas supply when temperature rose to the point that the PVC pipe began to burn. We contacted Carrier directly and it referred the case to “regional distributor” who blamed the problem on improper installation (incorrect furnace pitch and piping) and asserted that there is no fire hazard, but also added that he “did not recommend” that we use the furnace. We have not used the furnace since we discovered the problem.
At this point we feel very uncomfortable with Carrier representative’s assertion that there is no fire hazard and in absence of a constructive remediation to the overheating problem we are probably looking at replacing our furnace with a new one.
What is concerning to us in this situation is that Carrier does not appear to show any real interest to investigate this incident further for fire or other safety risk (such as possibility of someone inadvertently placing combustible materials on top of the furnace or even touching severely overheated furnace enclosure) - it seems like they are hoping that we simply replace the furnace prior to anyone performing any in-depth investigation (during last call to Carrier on 11/02/16 I informed them that I was planning to report this issue to Consumer Product Safety Commission.)
