Hurt, no treatment Made Jan 9, 2023, sent to the company Jan 17, 2023, published by CPSC Jan 31, 2023
The product, in the report: Home Natural Gas Furnace
Residential Bryant Furnace -‘Bryant Evolution System Plus 90i’Model 355AAV060120 caused a Carbon Monoxide leak, measured at 70ppm, resulting in the local Fire Department and gas company venting the home, and the gas capped and unit turned off. This unit does not have any active recalls, and two authorized service techs from Bryant determined the issue is a ‘known design defective secondary heat exchanger with this model that is not repairable’

The product, in the report: Bryant Series 926T Preferred™ 96 Two Stage Gas Furnace
Residential gas furnace stopped working (no heat). Upon investigating, it showed an error code indicating a flame was detected when not expected. Opening the combustion compartment, I found that indeed there was a flame, and it was melting and scorching the parts around it. A service technician inspected and determined that the automatic gas valve was leaking (not shutting off completely).

No one hurt Made Sep 7, 2018, sent to the company Dec 7, 2018, published by CPSC Dec 21, 2018
The product, in the report: gas furnace
The furnace failed during the winter months. The consumer contacted a local service company (Blanchard), who put a portable propane [REDACTED] heater in the basement to keep the pipes from freezing. The consumer was able to burn wood inside the house. In the evenings, the home temperature plunged to 50 degrees, but there was no damage to the home.
There were no injuries as a result of this issue. There was a smell that can best be described as a propane gas odor inside the house as the furnace is became compromised and before final failure occurred.
The unit was charred. Unfortunately, this side of the furnace is not able to be seen when it is installed in the housing cabinet. It needs to be removed to be able to see the damage from the unit being plugged or blocked. A technician from the distributor (Blodgett) conducted a test to size the unit. The calculations were performed in 2006/2007.

No one hurt Made Sep 7, 2018, sent to the company Dec 11, 2018, published by CPSC Jan 29, 2019
The product, in the report: Gas furnace
This furnace failed in the exact same manner as the one in Report# 20180907-68F7A-1791007..
The consumer believes that this unit had the exact same model & serial number as the previous unit, by the same mfr. The consumer said that there were no design changes to remove the poloypropolene liner in this 2006 unit, so when they replaced this 2015 unit, it was the identical to the prior one.
The consumer wrote: “The first furnace was installed by a local plumbing company and I believe the distributor, at the time, was Blodgett. When the second furnace failed in 2015 (the one in this report), the propane Service Provider, Blanchard Oil, installed and maintained the unit. Blodgett also ordered and shipped the parts. Homens is their new distributor. Originally, I was told that I would be receiving a $ 600 gift card but all of that went out the window and I had to purchase a new furnace from a different company. Based on the reviews from Blanchard and Fred’s Plumbing, I purchased a Napoleon Furnace. I can’t take any more risks of Bryant Furnace failures in Vermont Winter months.”
This furnace failed during Winter months and the consumer was home both times. The consumer contacted Blanchard who put a portable propane Rinnai heater in the basement to keep the pipes from freezing. The consumer was able to burn wood inside the house. In the evenings, the home temperature plunged to 50 degrees, but there was no damage to the home. ?
The consumer wrote, “According to [REDACTED] at Blodgett supply in Newport Vermont, because the Flame Rollout Switch (and error code on the furnace) functioned properly, basically shutting down the furnace, it prevented any problems with harmful fumes or exhaust from entering the home. Had that also stopped working, we would have had serious issues. When the furnace begins to fail, a strange smell is emitted. It smells like propane inside the home and it makes you nauseous, but I don’t think there were long term health issues associated with that. There was a great deal of stress during both failures. When you don’t have a working furnace in the winter and during sub zero weather, it is very upsetting.”
There was an odor that can best be described as a propane gas smell inside the house as the furnace became compromised and before final failure. When the consumer smelled this again in 2018, they knew immediately that the furnace was beginning to fail. When it did finally stop working, they contacted Bryant to open the second ticket. That is when Bryant told them that they shipped the consumer the same furnace with the same design issue so it is no wonder it failed just 3 years later.
The unit was charred – this can see that in the attached pictures. The first picture is from 2018, the one below that is from 2015. Unfortunately, this side of the furnace is not able to be seen when it is installed in the housing cabinet. It needs to be removed to be able to see the damage from the unit being plugged or blocked. The consumer attached pictures from the back of the furnace in 2015 and again in 2018. They look exactly the same. Also, Bryant is now suggesting that the size of the unit in terms of BTUs was too large for the home. Had that been the case, the furnace itself would have issued a fan high limit switch error code, which it did not. It issued the Flame Rollout Switch which indicates the unit is plugged. Blodgett also conducted a test to size the unit. Unfortunately, they did not keep a copy, but they have refuted Bryant’s claim on the sizing of the furnace. They have also sized the replacement [REDACTED] Unit and it is the same exact size. Bryant claims the unit was too large for the square footage of the home. According to Blodgett, you can’t just use Square Footage – you must also account for number of window and glass square footage and quality, type of walls, type of insulation, flooring, cold floor space (crawl space vs. basement, etc.) They performed the calculation in 2006/2007 and again in 2018 and have said the size of the Bryant and Napoleon furnaces are correct. The consumer is concerned that both units may have presented a fire, a CO or some other type of hazard.

No one hurt Made Dec 2, 2017, sent to the company Mar 15, 2018, published by CPSC Mar 30, 2018
The product, in the report: Bryant Legacy Gas Furnace Model 310A
Bryant Legacy Model 310A not working. Found furnace overheating and going out on high limit. Heat exchanger has 3 large cracks on 2 of the 3 chambers. This caused the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning. Unit is only 7 years old and is not used very much due to the mostly mild climate in my area.
