The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: McDonnell & Miller Rb-24low water cut off on water boiler

In mid January 2012 the McDonnell & Miller RB-24 low water cut off on a barely 6 year old Burnham 203PVNI hot water boiler shorted out due to water leaking into the electrical circuit from the plastic threaded section that screwed into the water pipe. The electrical short overloaded the 24 v circuit causing the transformer (fan center) to burn out and generating a significant amount of smoke in the basement. More serious damage was prevented by the tripping of the Fuse panel circuit breaker.

Plumber that repaired the damage noted that the Rb-24 units were “cheaply made” and had a history of unreliability.

As to be noted was that the 24 v circuitry of the boiler does not have any fuses to protect from any circuit overloads which I consider a notable design flaw by Burnhan’s. Electrical malfunctions are only protected by fuse panel circuit breakers.
