Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Trion by Fedders. High Efficiency Console Electronic Air Purifier. The manual is labelled 157251-001 6/05 Rev. B.

I have a Trion by Fedders High Efficiency Console Electronic Air Purifier purchased in 2005. The manual is labelled 157251-001 6/05 Rev. B.

I am contacting you because the Air Purifier started to spark and smoke earlier today. My home quickly filled with smoke which, fortunately, set off the smoke detector. When I went upstairs to investigate (the unit is in my master bedroom), I found flames starting to shoot out of the casing, I unplugged the unit.

My wife and have spent most of our day dusting, vacuuming and wiping down surfaces (My wife and I both have asthma). The smoke and black soot has exacerbated our asthma. The house is a mess and smells from the smoke and singed plastic casing.

I have lovingly maintained the pre-filter, charcoal filter and electronic filter, precisely following the manual instructions. I carefully wash the pre-filter and electronic filter on a monthly basis and have replaced the charcoal filter every four months.

Please advise me of any recalls or notifications regarding the safety of this product. I believe it is important to notify other consumers of the problem I encountered despite proper use and maintenance of this product.

    Thank you.
