The product, in the report: Holmes Small Room 3-Speed HEPA Air Purifier with Optional Ionizer, White

I am reporting a safety problem with the Holmes Small Room 3-Speed HEPA Air Purifier with Optional Ionizer, White. I purchased this purifier on March 14, 2016 and last week it caught fire. I have had this purifier in my 5 year old daughter’s bedroom since it was purchased. Last Thursday when I turned the unit off in the morning, I heard it turn back on. I looked down and saw a spark flash in the top of the unit. The unit then started smoking. I quickly unplugged it and took it outside. Her bedroom smelled of burnt plastic. I have already thrown the purifier away but my husband suggested that I report it to Consumer Reports. Let me know if you have any questions. Below is a link to the product on Amazon which is where I bought it. Thank you. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0000DK35B/ref=oh_aui_i_sh_in_o0_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The product, in the report: From Amazon: Holmes HEPA Type Desktop Air Purifier, 3 Speeds plus Optional Ionizer, HAP242-NUC

After approximately 12-14 months of daily use, my wife turned the switch on our Holmes Air Purifier to off at which point it shorted and continued to run... And appeared to start burning. She promptly unplugged the unit and moved to a safe place. I plugged the unit in later and confirm that with the switch in the off position the unit runs and appears to be catching fire...
