The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dehumidifier 70 pt
My 70 pt Whirlpool dehumidifier started rumbling and vibrating so violently that the plastic strips around the edge started to shoot off in pieces around the room. Model #WDH70EAPW was already reported as being a fire hazard but the recall did not include my serial# 01190402017708631. We heard the noise from the basement to the first floor, rushed down an unplugged the dehumidifier while the plastic pieces were being spewed around the electric socket and room.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dehumidifier WDH70EAPW 70 pints/day DOM: 04/2019 Make in Kaiping China Sold by COSTCO Wholesale Corporation Serial # 01190402017728706 White/Cream color front and back with dark brown side stripe and top. Removable water tray in the front 24” tall, 14” wide, 10” deep
This model of dehumidifier is on a list of recalled items, but not with my unit’s serial number. Regardless, we have kept watch on the unit. Recently we noticed a strong electrical odor and traced it to the dehumidifier. The units screen was flickering various numbers and codes and the control buttons were not functional. I unplugged the unit and aired out the area. Several hours later I plugged the unit back in to see if it would repeat these issues. “Most” of the control buttons did not work other than fan speed and off/on. A faint electrical odor was still being generated. We unplugged the unit and purchased a new dehumidifier.

No incident, no one hurt Made May 5, 2024, sent to the company May 8, 2024, published by CPSC May 22, 2024
The product, in the report: Whirlpool dehumidifier. White plastic base with black accent. 14.6 x 24 x 10.75 inches.
My Whirlpool dehumidifier WDH70EAPW (manufactured 2/2018) was plugged in and running in my basement. A very loud rattling noise woke me from sleep in my upstairs bedroom at 2am. Upon going downstairs I discovered over 2 dozen narrow plastic strips on the floor near the dehumidifier and thrown as far as 6 - 8 feet away in various directions. I believe these to be blades of the fan that were thrown as projectiles as the fan broke apart. I unplugged the unit without harm to myself or surrounding properties. If I had not been home to turn off the destructing unit, I believe additional damage could have occurred.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dehumidifier
I walked into the bathroom and found that the dehumidifier had exploded all over the bathroom. There are plastic shards all over. In the bathroom sink and all over the floor. There is a layer of dust covering everything including the toilet seat and the water in the toilet. It smells like smoke. It’s a miracle that it didn’t cause a fire and hit myself or my kids while we were in the bathroom.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dehumidifier
With rain and humidity levels higher than usual for the month of June, we have been running our Whirlpool AD65USM2 S Dehumidifier in our basement like we usually do in the summer months. When returning from our walk, we returned to a basement filled with smoke after the dehumidifier caught fire. Thankfully, no one was injured, just smoke damage and nauseated fumes throughout the entire house. After contacting the company today, they offered that safety was their #1 priority and transferred me 3 times to incorrect departments and then offered a ridiculous low ball $ offer to make the problem go away after telling us that this particular model was not part of the recall despite looking the exact same as the other models that were recalled.

The product, in the report: 70 Pint Home Dehumidifier
Noticed a hot “electrical” smell coming from our basement. Upon further research, tracked it down to our 5 year old Whirlpool dehumidifier which was showing some type of error code and was very warm to the touch (and not working). Was able to unplug and noticed smell had gone away.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dehumidifier Model WDH70EAPW, Manufactured Date 03/2019, Item # 2944894, Serial # 01190302017706205. Purchased from Costco on 05/19/2010. White in color 70 Pint/Day, Dimensions 14.6” x 24” x 10.75”
Since learning of recall on Whirlpool Dehumifiers , we also have one that was manufactured 03/2019 with same Model: WDH70EAPW, Item # 2944894, Serial # 01190302017706205 that we purchased at Costco on 05/19/2019. We no longer use it because it started having a burning, electrical smell when using. Started doing this shortly after 1 year anniversary of having and warranty was no longer available. We stopped using it and purchased another unit to replace this one. We did not get rid or destroy this unit, occasionally we would hook up to see if would do again and within minutes it would give electrical burning smell and we would immediately unhook from electrical power.

My Whirlpool Gold Dehumidifier caught fire last night and started a fire in my house. The entire unit was engulfed in flames and has been burnt to complete destruction.
There is damage to other items on the level, including burning through water lines that, fortunately extinguished the fire, but resulted in extensive water being released into the home. Our home is now covered in a soot due to the fire. The unit itself is the only source of flames, the cord and electrical outlet is still intact. What a frightening mess!!!!
I was shocked to see the number of units that have been recalled for similar safety concerns. There was property damage - but there could have been total loss or loss of life. Scary!

The product, in the report: Whirlpool dehumidifier model AD75UST completely burned. No data tag information is available.
On November 19, 2013 a Whirlpool dehumidifier model AD75UST caught on fire in my basement. The smoke alarm went off (at 1:30am) and I put out most of the fire with a fire extinguisher and was able to keep the fire from spreading. It did cause extensive smoke damage through the entire house.
Submitter also noted the remains of the dehumidifier are in the possession of [REDACTED]..They are a fire investigation company..Due to the extent of damage to the unit they could not determine what failed inside the dehumidifier...The lead investigator at that company is [REDACTED] and he told submitter Whirlpool was notified shortly after the fire.
Submitter asked that CPSC issue a recall notice for this dehumidifier to prevent another such unit from going up in flames.
Sincerely,
[REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Whirlpool Dehumidifier
Whirlpool Dehumidifier Model #: AD40USL1 Seriel #QM1347194 Purchased: BJ’s Wholesale Club, May 2002
In August 2013 I noticed that my Whirlpool dehumidifier was generating excessive heat in my basement. The unit was hot as well as the basement room it was in. Air intakes were clean and have been cleaned regularly over the years. I tried using the unit on a lower setting and still heated up. The unit was functioning as the water bucket would fill. I stopped using the unit due to the overheating.
A week ago I learned of the massive Consumer Product Commission dehumidifier recall. I checked the Whirlpool website and found that even though my unit was not part of the recall. My model looks the same, was made at the same time and cost in line with other Whirlpool dehumidifiers that were recalled so I called Whirlpool customer service. I explained the overheating issues I was having. They confirmed that my unit was not part of the recall, out of the warranty period and advised me to buy a new one rather than have serviced. I writing you to advise you of the overheating problem my unit is having and feel it warrants consideration of being recalled.

I have used my Whirlpool Model # AD40USR1 dehumidifier for a few years to control moisture in the air in my basement. My Whirlpool dehumidifier is usually left on automatic mode and my husband and I empty it when it automatically shuts off due to the bin being full of water.
Luckily we were home and hadn’t gone to bed around 10pm the other night when our home began to fill with smoke. I went to the basement, smoke filled the air and we determined that the problem was from the dehumidifier. My husband was able to shut this unit off, unplug and drag it out of our basement door before it caused a fire.
I do not see this specific dehumidifier on any of the recent recall lists and am concerned for other consumers safety. I shutter to think what may have happened to my home, or my husband and I had we gone to bed already.

The product, in the report: Whirlpool 50 Pint Dehumidifier Model AD50USL3 White plastic, approximately 2 feet high
Items: 2 Whirlpool 50 Pint Dehumidifiers Model AD50USL3 Serial Numbers: QP1820933 and QP1821048
Both units were in use in my basement. When I went into the basement I noticed an electrical burning odor. I eventually determined that it was coming from one of the dehumidifiers. I looked up any recalls on these units and found that a recall Release #02-096 was for serial number beginning with QL, but not for units beginning for QP like my units. Seeing that the recall stated that the units were overheating and causing fires. I also found a Whirlpool document that stated “certain internal components including wire terminals and switches can overheat. This can result in fire and cause personal injury or property damage.”
I was concerned that my dehumidifiers might have the same problem, so I took the cover off the units to see if there was something that needed to be cleaned. I also took the cover off the compressor and found that the wiring on the overload switch on both units was brittle and bare and had shorted against the metal rod coming from the top of the compressor that it was tightly pulled against (I have photos showing both overload switches). I assume that the burning odor was from the bare wire that was shorting against the metal rod, which I believe is an electrical and fire hazard. On both units this wire as so short that it was pulled tightly against the metal rod. In addition, other wires and terminal plugs on both units were brittle, cracked, and broken - which are also electrical and fire hazards. That area was also very hot.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
The consumer stated that his dehumidifier was on. He smelled an odor of smoke and discovered that the unit was emitting smoke, which had triggered his smoke detectors. He immediately unplugged it and place it outside to prevent further damages. He noticed that the capacitor had melted, which he believes prevented the unit from safely turning off.
The consumer feels that he is experiencing similar problems of Release # 02-096.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.
The consumer feels that that this dehumidifier is a fire hazard and should be reported.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
Found an online recall on a Whirlpool dehumidifier, mine was not in the recall, but caught fire anyway. This is the second one that has done it.The first one was discarded as I didn’t know there was a product recall. I thought someone should know that even though this product was not part of the recall,it seems to suffer from the same problem. Fortunately I was home at the time and just simply unplugged it and removed it from my home.
The product in question is a Whirlpool 50 pint dehumidifier,model#AD50USR1 Serial #QS3714496

The product, in the report: The product is a Whirlpool/Gold Dehumidifier that is on wheels free standing about 25 inches tall and 13 inches wide.
I have a Whirlpool Dehumidifier (Model # ADSOUSSl Serial # QU0419817) that I purchased about 4 years ago. On July 9th 2011 I returned home and noticed an odor coming from the workroom in the basement of my home. I found the Whirlpool Dehumidifier with smoke coming from the vents and a humming sound coming from the unit. I disconnected the unit and carried it outside and smoke continued coming from the unit for several minutes, and the unit was extremely hot, and it is my opinion that if I had not returned when I did the unit would have erupted into flames and I would have returned to a fire scene.
