The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dehumidifier Model Number 42-99701.

Today, I noticed the smell of smoke in my house, and I traced it down to my basement. When I entered my basement, I found it heavily engulfed in smoke. I was able to trace the smoke back to our dehumidifier, which we purchased from Sears approximately 4 years ago. It has been 12 hours and we are still running fans to empty the smoke from the basement. I am extremely agitated that it would break in such a manner as to cause harm to myself and my family. If we werent home, the house would have burned down. It is a Kenmore Elite Dehumidifier Model Number 42-99701. Thank you and we would appreciate a response.

The product, in the report: product number 251.997011801 serial number WNX4WA0001243

5 years ago, I purchased a Sears Dehumidifier.

1 year ago, I received a notice from Sears indicating it may be subject to recall due to a potential fire hazard. As directed, I went to a website dedicated to the website, entered my product number, and was told my product was safe.

    Yesterday, my dehumidifier caught fire.

I have called the recall hotline, and they ditrected me to Sears. I called Sears twice, and both times I was cut while being transferred.

I think they should know that their list of affected dehumidifier models may not be long enough.

The product, in the report: Dehumidfier

The caller stated that there was an odor and she saw black smoke coming from the basement. She discovered that the dehumidifier had overheated and melted the electrical cord. The unit was only plugged in for approximately 30 mins. She unplugged it to prevent further damages. There was black soot on the wall and it tripped the circuit breaker.

(9/2013) The manufacturer was contacted and she was informed that her model number was not included.

Caller is concerned that this dehumidifier could have caused a house fire if she was not present.

The product is not involved in a recall.

The product, in the report: 50 pint dehumidifier

I purchased a 50 pint Sears Kenmore Dehumidifier in 2008 and in 2010 it tripped the circuit breaker. This was a dedicated circuit for the sump pump with GFI protection. I found this when I went to the basement to do laundry and the air was musty and the sump pump was over flowing due to the sump pump and the dehumidifier being in the same outlet. I reset the GFI and the pump turned on. I turned on the dehumidifier and the circuit tripped again. I replaced the dehumidifier with a Kenmore model 50501 on 8/22/10 and have had no problems with this new unit.

The product, in the report: MY SEARS KENMORE DEHUMIDIFIER MODEL 580.54501400 LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE A SEARS MODEL [REDACTED] DISPLAY PANEL, EXCEPT FOR THE DIMENSION SIZE WHICH LOOKS LIKE A [REDACTED].

I HAVE A SEARS KENMORE DEHUMIDIFIER MODEL 580.54501400 PURCHASED MAY 26, 2004 FOR $159.99 FROM THE LOCAL SEARS. I CONSTANTLY MONITOR THE HUMIDITY IN MY BASEMENT. LAST WINTER, THE UNIT DID NOT SEEM TO WORK PLUS IT DID SEEM TO BE QUITE HOT ON TOP. I THOUGHT THE ROOM TEMPERATURE WAS TOO LOW. I PURCHASED A DIFFERENT BRAND, LARGER UNIT. AS SPRING BROUGHT WARMER TEMPS, I DECIDED TO RETRY THE SEARS UNIT. AGAIN, I KEPT A CLOSE WATCH TO ITS PROGRESS. GOOD THING, AS ON ONE TRIP TO THE BASEMENT, THE UNIT WAS SO HOT ON THE TOP, I COULD NOT TOUCH IT. WITHIN SECONDS, I SMELLED SOMETHING LIKE IT WAS BURNING INSIDE. I QUICKLY SHUT IT OFF AND UNPLUGGED IT. I KEPT THE UNIT TO RECYCLE THE PARTS THIS SUMMER WHEN I FOUND OTHER SEARS BAD UNITS ON THE NET.

I THINK SEARS SHOULD REFUND MY INVESTMENT ALONG WITH THOSE OTHER UNITS. OTHER CONSUMERS NEED TO CHECK THEIR UNITS AND FILE A REPORT LIKE I HAVE. THANK YOU U.S.CPSC.
