The product, in the report: 70 Pint Dehumidifier Date manufactured: 06/2013

This consumer is reporting that she purchased a 70 pint dehumidifier approximately three or four years ago from a retailer in Wisconsin and had no problems with it until May 6, 2019 when she just happened to go to the basement but when returning up the stairs she heard an odd noise coming from the dehumidifier. She turned around and saw that the unit was flashing an EC or ES. warning code. She returned to the unit and noted that it was very hot to touch, there was a burning odor with fumes resembling a burning wire. She tried to turn it off a few times but she was unsuccessful so she disconnected it from power and placed it outside of her home. There are no injuries being reported. She has not contacted the manufacturer and may not contact them. Her model is not included in the recall.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier

The submitter’s daughter noticed a burn odor and informed the submitter. The submitter realized the dehumidifier was running and hot to the touch, even though the control panel was off as it looks when its turned off. The submitter said the dehumidifier was plugged into the wall but his daughter has not used it since March of 2017. The submitter said the burn odor was coming from the unit. The submitter the plugged the unit to the outlet and said the unit immediately turned on but the control panel was off. The submitter pressed the off and stop button to shut off the unit but it failed to shut off. The submitter said the unit turned off when he unplugged. The submitter indicated that he repeated the process multiple times and each time the unit failed to shut off and it became very hot to the touch.

The submitter called the firm and informed them of the incident. The submitter was told that the unit was not recalled and that it was out of warranty. The submitter said the Rep. (name unknown) was not concerned with the safety hazard and informed him that they have not received other complaints on his model. The Rep. suggested the submitter take the unit to a dealer for repairs.

The submitter said he uses the unit during the winter months and it hasn’t been used since March 2017.

The product, in the report: PS 78503

My dehumidifier has been causing a short in the electric circuit which controls all my lights in the crawl space. This started happening just a week ago. I unplugged it and was going to look up info online. That week I got my REMC magazine which warned of recalls involving dehumidifiers. I recorded all the info on my unit and see that a very similar model has been recalled just last month.I also found that a PS SERIES 78303 was involved in a recall in 2011. I am concerned that this product is dangerous and wonder if you have had any other reports of problems with this unit. Mine was purchased in the same time frame, at one of the locations mentioned, and was shorting out as described, so please let me know if this is dangerous!
