  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 17, 2025, sent to the company Jul 1, 2025, published by CPSC Jul 16, 2025

The product, in the report: Midea 50 Pint Cube Dehumidifier Model #MAD50PS1QGR, grey, 15x15x15

Midea 50 Pint Cube Dehumidifier Model #MAD50PS1QGR, manufactured 05/2021

Item was in use in basement area to dehumidify living space.

Unit was turned off but still plugged in. Heard drain pump cycle multiple times in an hour while I was in the other room, finally stayed on continuously and after a few minutes the room began to smell like something was burning.

After unplugging the unit and letting it cool down for an hour, I cleaned all filters, checked for clogs in the pump drain line, and reassembled but did not connect the pump drain line or inlet. When connecting back to power, the drain pump started up immediately and the unit began to heat up. Turned the unit on to attempt to reset, but now even with the humidity setting set to 80% the condenser starts immediately and will not turn off. Disconnected the unit from power after it began to show signs of overheating again (burning smell).

Dehumidifier was used around 12 hours a day, 6 months out of the year. 4th year that we’ve owned this particular unit and this is the first major failure we’ve experienced with the model.

No injuries or property damage to report, however this is solely due to the fact I was present at home when the unit began to malfunction. If I had been away for a few hours or if this had happened overnight there is a strong possibility that the unit could have continued to overheat and started a fire.

Midea dehumidifier model WDP70AE6N, turned it on this spring and after 1 cycle made a weird noise, smoke came out of unit and it stopped. I unplugged the unit. Now when plugged in fan runs slow or not at all and after couple minutes smells like something burning. Unplugged the unit.
