Kenmore Recall Fulfillment Center P.O. Box 240007 Huntsville, AL 35813
[REDACTED] - President, LG Electronics, USA [REDACTED] Huntsville, AL 35824-1513
SUBJECT: No Response Regarding U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission Recall #13-238
Dear LG Director /Supervisor /Manager /Leader:
I am contacting you yet again, after dozens and dozens of calls, countless hours and one previous certified letter, to find out why I have not yet received my dehumidifier recall remedy check for $100 as previous correspondence promised me “in 7-10 business days” in your letter to me dated 2/26/2021.
RECAP: I successfully registered my claim online in January, receiving confirmation # [REDACTED]. I sent the requested severed cord and labels from the unit to the address above on 1/14/2021, along with pictures documenting the unit and severed cord. The package was received by you on 1/20/2021 according to the USPS Tracking number. After waiting over a month for my check to arrive, I reached out in February with dozens of phone calls and hours of waiting “on-hold”, finally followed by a certified letter (sent 2/26, tracking #[REDACTED]). That letter was received by your office on 3/2/2021. On March 5, I received an unsigned letter that was mailed to me with an acknowledgement of my recall registration, stating I would receive my elected remedy check of $100 in 7-10 days. Also included with that letter was a $25 coupon that was promised as part of the recall settlement; that coupon had already expired as of 12/31/2020 (sent 3/2/20211).
IN SUMMARY: Since initially filling out the online recall form in January, I have called over a dozen times and literally spent, cumulatively, several hours “on-hold” or briefly speaking to agents or being transferred from one agent to another all while trying to get an answer as to where my check is. Each call starts with my recapping my issue to the agent(s), then being transferred between 1 and 4 more times to another “correct type” of recall agent (again recapping my inquiry each time) before one final transfer attempt... and then hearing a slight beeping tone on the line, which is followed by the line going dead. All documentation to support my claim is on-file and once again, attached to this letter. Please send me my check (and an unexpired $25 coupon for Sears/Sears.com, as promised!).
P.S.: Finally, I must say, this whole experience has really soured my opinion of LG overall, despite owning several very expensive products made by LG which are currently in my home. The time and troubles I have encountered seeking the missing $100 dehumidifier recall remedy has resulted in a greater lost in my customer satisfaction with LG at this point than the $100 represents. In stark contrast, I also had a recalled dehumidifier from [REDACTED] around the same time. With that company, I received a replacement unit within 4 days of filing a 100% online claim (an actual replacement unit was shipped for free to my house and received within 4 days!). Now that is what I call customerfocused service I Please help to begin restoring my confidence in LG Electronics by fulfilling your obligations and promises by sending me my much overdue $100 check and valid $25 coupon for Sears/Sears.com as described on your recall site. Depending on your response, you may have lost me as a future LG customer based on this experience thus far.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore dehumidifier 35 pints, white, front drawer pull out for water bucket, model No. 251.50351010, S/N: WNX1X20001690 Other characters on the sticker include M/C2049 and 2010.02 UPC 8 809154 393356
Around 6 AM, June 18, 2021, I woke up to my home security alarm going off due to the smoke detector detecting smoke. My bedroom and bathroom were filled with white smoke and it smelled like burning electrical wires so I went outside and called the fire department. I don’t know how long I was breathing in the toxic smoke. After an investigation they determined it was my Kenmore dehumidifier so I took it outside. After carefully opening it up I found burned wires, burned plastic and what looks like a burned component. Since this is a fire hazard, I’m reporting it.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier
The submitter is reporting the dehumidifier as posing a fire hazard. There are burn damages to the prongs. For almost a month she had noticed a burn odor while the unit was on but she didn’t realize the burn damages until last week.
She contacted the firm last week and reported the issue. She was told that her unit was not recalled and she was referred to different departments for assistance with either a repair or replacement. She believes they are giving her the run around and they did not appear to be concerned about investigating the potential fire hazard the unit poses.
She would like the unit included in recall # 13-238.

Kenmore Elite Dehumidifier Model 251.90701010 S/N WNX5Y50000019
Electrical Shock Hazard
The Kenmore is about 7-9 years old. Purchased about 2007-2009
In is in the basement and performed well.
On 9/14/16, the basement breaker circuit went out. After repeated tests and disconnecting various electrical equipment the problem traced to Kenmore. It has not been damaged and has been in the same place for years ... water goes automatically into a drain, so seldom touched or moved. Electric cord was sound and had no defects.
When I plugged the Kenmore in the receptacle, the breaker on the receptacle was activated and cut the electricity.
It cut off again when I tried to restart it. Thinking it might be the receptacle, I ran a extension cord to another receptacle in the basement.
When I tried to connect the Kenmore cord to the plugged in extension cord, there was a very large spark generated at the plug interface and a CRACK.
If I had not been holding the two ends at a distance from the connection point I would have been burned or severely shocked. I was fortunate.
I noted other Kenmore dehumidifier models have been recalled before due to hazard problems. This was produced in Korea and might be from the same manufacturer.

The product, in the report: 45 pint dehumidifier
This consumer is reporting her 45 pint dehumidifier as a fire safety hazard. She has two of the same model & serial number, however only one was running and found overheating at the time of this incident. She came home June 8th, 2016 and smelled a strong electrical burning odor as she came into the house, she then tracked the odor to the dehumidifier. She immediately unplugged the unit which was extremely hot. The caller’s husband had to wait approximately an hour before he could even touch enough of it to transport it outside where it then took almost another three hours to cool off. The caller contacted the manufacturer who provided her with different phone numbers to contact and also provided her with the phone number to the CPSC Hotline. There are no injuries being reported If this dehumidifier is recalled the consumer asking that she be reimbursed at manufacturer expense.

The product, in the report: 70 pints dehumidifier
This caller is contacting the CPSC regarding her daughter’s Kenmore dehumidifier which was purchased September 15th, 2013 after her previously owned unit was recalled. Her daughter had no problems with the new dehumidifier until her father went to her basement Monday, June 22nd, 2015 to empty the water container and found that it had overflowed and that the dehumidifier was overheating. The unit was not smoking, however the fan was not running and the top of the unit was very hot.
With the thought that the unit may reset and work properly it was left plugged in but it continued to overheat and so the caller’s husband unplugged their daughters dehumidifier Wednesday, June 24th, 2015 and it remains unplugged for fear of fire.
The manufacturer was contacted around June 22nd, 2015 but was believed to be unconcerned.
The submitter added when she turned the unit off the compressor continued to run, and the only way it completely shut off was when it was unplugged.

The product, in the report: Kenmore dehumidifier. Model # 580.53650200, serial # 301TA0311 , 65 pints
I own a Kenmore dehumidifier, model # 580.53650200, serial # 301TA0311, 65 pints. It caught fire. This happened awhile ago. I saw the recall information on the TV. I was told my dehumidifier was not on the recall list and to call Sears. I called the number I was given (800-469-4663). The lady said I would have to pay yo have it fixed. I was shocked! I feel my dehumidifier is defective. What do I do now?

The product, in the report: 70 pint dehumidifier
Caller purchased a 70 pint dehumidifier sometime around mid October 2011 and had no problems with it until September 30th, 2013 when it just stopped working. He moved it from one side of his basement to the other side but when he tried to plug it in flames and sparks came out. He thought at first that it was the plug so he moved it to another plug and the same incident happened with flames and sparks shooting out from where he was plugging it in.
The caller contacted the manufacturer the week of 10/04/2013, rep advised caller that he had to contact CPSC. There are no injuries being reported Caller is asking that this model also be recalled with repair or replacement at manufacturer expense. It was fixed at no cost.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore dehumidifier model # 251.50701011
I had a sears Kenmore dehumidifier that stopped working. I bought two new ones, Model # 251.50701011. Shortly after I bought the two new ones the old one that had stopped working (a different model) was recalled. Within a year of purchasing the two new ones one of them “burned out”. I went down the basement and found one of them not working and the ground fault protector tripped. I reset the ground fault and turned it back on, sparks flew, smoke came out and my ground fault protector again tripped. I unplugged it and then unplugged second one.
I suspected that these two had the same problem as the first one that was recalled. I saw in Consumer Reports that more dehumidifiers had been recalled and checked but they were not on the list. I believe that this model (# 251.50701011) has the same problem as the others and is subject to malfunctioning and causing a fire. I have disconnected my two and am not using them.

... Mine did not catch fire before I unplugged it, but I *had* been noticing that it was running more continuously than the unit it replaced (which had itself been recalled), and that the tank-full cutoff switch did not seem to be working properly (which was not a problem in my case since I had it hooked to a drain hose, but which might be a secondary symptom of the same problem.)
I’d already decided that it needed to be unplugged and serviced, so the recall is actually quite timely.
Given the malfunctions noted above, I’m not very surprised to hear that some units caught fire.
(What I *am* puzzled by is why dehumidifiers seem to experience more recalls than air conditioners or refrigerators, which are essentially the same mechanism.)

The product, in the report: 70 pint dehumidifier
Caller purchased 70 pint dehumidifier approximately two years ago and had no problems with it until about two months ago when it began overheating. The dehumidifier has a searcher that registers whether it is running. The searcher was not registering that the dehumidifier was active at all and the circuit breaker it was connected to was popping. Consumer has disconnected the dehumidifier by unplugging. Circuit breaker is no longer popping. There have been no injuries to report. The consumer has not contacted the manufacturer but he does intend to contact them. He is asking that his model be added to the recall and refund be allowed at manufacturer expense.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: Since making this complaint I have contacted Sears. They have informed me that they will not take responsibility for the defective item because it is not part of a recall. Another note regarding the defective item is the elctrical cord gets very hot thus causing the circuit breaker to pop. If I let this product run, it will burn and cause a fire. Sears’ lack of responsiveness for a product they sold is unacceptable and appalling.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
Just learned of the recall. Have followed the instructions provided on web site Confirmation Number [REDACTED] Enclosed are the required stickers and plug :from the machine. Even though I paid $243.79 ($229 + $13.80 taxes) for the machine when purchased in 2006 (copy of receipt enclosed), the web site notes I will receive a $90 refund and a $25 gift card within ten (1 0) days. because the dehumidifier was defective, it would seem 1 would be/should be reimbursed the full amount of my expense or be provided with a new machine of equal value. I am not sure your limited offer makes for good public relations. Additionally, I have looked at some web reviews and remain a bit skeptical that I will receive the “settlement” amount within the promised ten (l 0) day period. I shall see. The dehumidifier ran “hot” for quite some time after I purchased it. Finally, it stopped collecting much moisture at all. I was concerned and finally stopped using it. Good thing I did when I think of what could have happened! I never received a recall notice warning me of the potential hazard. Finally, in 2010, I lugged the thing back to my local Sears store (Battle Creek Ml) where I had purchased it. I had hoped they could fix it and save me the cost of a new machine. The “fix” cost me $90.54 (receipt enclosed) and never did fix the problem. Go figure! Two years later, a recall was issued on the dehumidifier. I knew nothing about the recall until going through an old issue (November 2012) of Consumer Reports magazine. A special thank you to them for bringing this problem to my attention. On this date, I contacted Sears National Customer Relations at 1-800-549-4505 and spoke with a very pleasant and accommodating representative who, at my request, provided me with the Sears’ Customer Solutions address. By copy of this letter, lam asking Sears to fully reimburse me the 2010 out-of-pocket costs ($90.54) I incurred in my fruitless attempt at “repairing” the defective dehumidifier. Please reference Service Order #[REDACTED]. I will note that r have been a loyal customer of Sears for many years. In addition to two (2) dehumidifiers, I have purchased refrigerators, ranges, a microwave, a dryer, vacuum cleaners etc. Whenever I was in need of a major appliance or a small appliance, my first thought was Sears. Your response to my request will clarifY for me how much you value your loyal customers and may very well determine whether or not I continue my relationship with Sears in the future. Hoping I can.
UPDATE FROM CONSUMER: As promised, I received a $90 check and a $25 gift card toward new dehumidifier if purchased before 12-31-13. Both were received in a timely manner- within 10 days as promised by the mfr. I receieved a recall notice in the mail on 6-26-13- a few years too late. While I thought the “settlement” cound have/should have been more (as outlined in my 6-13-13 letter), I am ‘satisfied’ with the prompt response from the mfr. The matter has been resolved. I am grateful the defective dehumidifer did not result in a home catastrpohe.
On 6-8-13 I received a call rfom Sears advising me my credit card would be credited the full amount of the repair in 2010- $90.54. As of this date, the credit has not been applied.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Dehumidifier Model # 580.54701400 Purchased 2004
Summer of 2011 my Kenmore dehmidifier was overheating. It smelled horrible and I think was very close to catching on fire, but I luckily smelled it and unplugged it. Obviously, the unit was literally toast. So, that fall I brought it to be recycled. I have my manuals and reciept for the unit that I had to discard, I may even have a receipt for recycling the unit (not sure).
When I got the card about a recall I thought that I should have been compensated, but they said because I didn’t have the unit they couldn’t do anything. So, if there is a lawsuit I just wanted to at least report what had happened to us with this unit.
Kenmore dehumidifier from 2004: Model # 580.54701400.

The product, in the report: Kenmore dehumidifier
On December 22, 2012, my Kenmore dehumidifier, model # 251.5070 1010, overheated and started smoking, emitting noxious fumes. Fortunately, I was downstairs at the time, so I unplugged it and put it outside, and was able to avoid a catastrophic fire. I went online and found that there was a recall on Kenmore dehumidifiers for identical reasons. When I called the hotline, however, I was told that my unit was not recalled, and that I would have to bring it in for repair. I mistakenly assumed that it would be repaired for free, since it was an expensive unit, and was unsafe. When we brought it in to the Sears store, we were told that it was out of warranty (it was purchased in May 2010), and we would have to pay for the repair. We brought the unit home, rather than having it repaired, since I would rather spend the money on a newer, safer unit. I am greatly disappointed that Sears management would not make this right. I have a Kenmore 30 pint dehumidifier, model 580.52300200. The power cord has been working off and on for a few months, and recently when I moved the cord, it exploded, sending embers in the air and smoke everywhere. I’m so glad my hand was back a few inches from where the cord exploded. I see there’s a recall on newer models than mine, but that they have the same issue as I just experienced. I’d like to warn you about this problem with the model I have, and see if there’s a solution for the unit I own. I sent the above text to Kenmore’s customer service a week ago and received no response whatsoever.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Dehumidifier model #580.54501400 (50 pint capacity) I saw that a similar unit (Kenmore model #580.53509300, made in 2003) was the subject of a recall. We bought our model in 2004 or so. It was also made by LG Electronics, China. I suspect it is very similar to the recalled model and may be suffering the same product defect that prompted the recall.
Several months ago, the Kenmore Dehumidifier model #580.54501400 (50 pint capacity) started to start and stop more frequently. Then it the extension cord circuit breaker began to pop everytime we used it. I replaced the extension cord.
Two days ago, the unit began making a strange smell, like ozone and burnt plastic. My wife felt the unit and it was extremely hot to the touch. We turned it off, fearing a fire.

We believe the unit is dangerous and likely defective. There should be an investigation and the unit should be recalled if there is in fact widespread defects -- people could die and houses could burn down otherwise.
I still have the unit, as well as photos.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier (approx. 30 pint)
(6/2012) The dehumidifier emitted smoke during use. The smoke resembled an electrical odor. The consumer searched his home and was able to identify that his dehumidifier was causing the problem. The consumer immediately turned it off and unplugged it from the wall outlet. The dehumidifier did not show any signs of charring or discoloration, but it was extremely hot to the touch.
The consumer only uses the dehumidifier for approximately 3 months out of the year (Sprin-Sumer) and started using it again in May/June 2012. The dehumidifier was operating on the timer setting when the incident occurred.
(6/2012) The consumer called the manufacturer and told them about the incident. The manufacturer’s rep. (name unknown) did not ask the consumer any questions about the incident. The rep. told the consumer that his model was no longer manufactured, but he indicated that he did not have any other information for the consumer.
The consumer uses the dehumidifier for approx. 3 months out of the year in his cellar.
The consumer’s dehumidifier was not included in Recall CAP# 12-240, but he believes that it presented a problem similar to the ones identified in the recall and that the recall may need to be expanded to include additional models.

The product, in the report: 50 pint dehumidifier with the Kenmore logo on the front top of the unit. Made of white plastic and approx 2 ft tall. This unit has a fan and humidity control on the tope front panel. Comes with front-loading water bucket.
My Sears Kenmore Dehumidifier filled by basement with smoke. I immediately unplugged this unit. I recently heard about a recall, but my model was not included. I sounds like it should have been. Model # 580.54501400 purchased at Sears 7/17/2004 for $169.59.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Dehumidifier Model Number 42-99701
Today, I noticed the smell of smoke in my house, and I traced it down to my basement. When I entered my basement, I found it heavily engulfed in smoke. I was able to trace the smoke back to our dehumidifier, which we purchased from Sears approximately 2 years ago. It has been 12 hours and we are still running fans to empty the smoke from the basement. As our dehumidifier is relatively new, I am extremely agitated that it would break in such a manner as to cause harm to myself and my family. It is a Kenmore Elite Dehumidifier Model Number 42-99701. The serial number of our dehumidifier is SIN: 42-99701WNX4V90006625. Thank you and we would appreciate a response.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifiers
Consumer said that he was upstairs two floor from the basement when he felt a strong burning odor. Consumer rushed to the basement and found out that his dehumidifier was hot at touch. Consumer was unable to turn off.
Consumer unplugged the dehumidifier from the electric out. Consumer did not had the product he disposal.
Consumer feels that his dehumidifier could pose a fire hazard, he also said if he wouldn’t be at home it would caught on fire.
09/10/2011 Consumer e-mailed and explained incident to mfr. He hasn’t here from mfr yet.
No Injury.
Further clarification of incident: Sears Kenmore Dehumidifier Model # 580.54701, (this is the model number given in the User’s Manual. The number provided in the Parts Manual is 580.54701400). Dehumidifier is a 70 pint capacity model that can be used in cool temperatures. I owned the unit for approximately 7 years, setting it to cycle on and off every 3 hours during the warmer months. It was located in the basement with a hose attached that drained into a sump pump. Humidity setting was usually at 40%. Quite suddenly one evening, I began to smell something burning. I was on the second floor. Eventually traced problem to the dehumidifier which was extremely hot to the touch and emitting a strong, acrid smell. Unit was clearly turned “On”; the switches were illuminated but it was not running. Perhaps dehumidifier was in between cycles. I noticed small amount of water, perhaps condensation, on the upper part of the front grill. I immediately unplugged unit and when it cooled, threw it away. Unfortunately, it didn’t occur to me to save my dehumidifier for future examination. I believe I caught this incident at the very beginning. Had I gone to bed or left the premises I have no doubt a fire would have ensued. I notified Sears Customer Service weeks ago but have not heard from them.
