  1. No one hurt

Made Apr 22, 2020, sent to the company Apr 30, 2020, published by CPSC May 14, 2020

The product, in the report: Hampton Bay Dehumidifier sold by Home Depot made in PRC and importer The Home Depot of [REDACTED]. Beige, four wheels, and measure 21 inches high, 13 inches wide and 17 inches long Model HB-50

Hampton Bay (Home Depot) Automatic Dehumidifier internal component failed and caused the unit to overheat and start to smoke while running in my basement. The product is beige measure 21 inches high, 13 inches wide and 17 inches long. The model is HB-50 -N and serial number CP912964 087W. Sold at Home Depot and bought new in early 2000’s. The product melted one of the internal parts from the inside out. I was able to catch it before there was a fire. I reached out to Consumer Product Safety Commission as well which confirmed there was a recall on this dangerous unit back in 2009. I was unaware of this until this concern transpired and I looked into the matter.

The product, in the report: 40 Pint dehumidifier

This consumer is reporting his 40 pint dehumidifier that he purchased from a previous owner sometime around 2007-2008 time frame.

He had no problems with this dehumidifier until August 2nd, 2016 when he smelled an acrid plastic burning odor.

The only thing he had running was the dehumidifier so he turned it off, unplugged then plugged it back in and within one minutes he saw a flash in the back of the unit, then smoke and a worsened acrid odor then he saw and orange glow and assumed that it was flames which prompted him to unplug it again.

August 3rd, 2016 he removed the back panel and the metal cover he saw that what he believed may be a relay wiring was charred and burned.

The consumer is reporting this unit as a fire hazard and is asking for repair at manufacturer expense.

There are no injuries being reported.

He has not contacted the manufacturer but he does intend to contact them.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier

Awoke to smell of smoke at 4 AM. House filled with smoke due to electrical fire in dehumidifier in basement. To verify that we had correctly identified source of smoke, I removed screws on back cover of dehumidifier to look for ignition source and observed melted insulation on wiring and other electrical components.

Unit is a Hampton Bay HB-50 Rev. N Dehumifidier, purchased with a credit card at Home Depot in 2002. S/N is AP 758020 018W.

I checked online for incident reports on this brand, and found that a recall had been issued in 2009 because of other fires. It does not appear that Home Depot made any attempt to contact us, which is unacceptable; given that the unit was purchased with a credit card, and given the extensive data mining performed by companies, they should have been able to contact us, if they cared to. This appears negligent to me.

The consumer is a former fire marshall and feels that the dehumidifier caused the fire hazard. He says they never had a issue with it. The caller says it was plugged in for 2-3 days prior to the incident. The consumer says it never affected the top duplex, just the bottom.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier

We have a Hampton Bay dehumidifier in our finished basement. September 15,2013 I awoke to a strange odor. When i opened the basement door I heard a strange popping noise. I woke my husband up and we attempted to investigate the basement but the light would not go on. We could see smoke filling the basement so we evacuated our home and called 911. Fire company searched our home top to bottom and finally found the problem. Our dehumidifier had a hole the size of an apple burnt in the front of the grill. The other grill pieces were melted. Around the controls there was scorching. The wiring pulled out with no effort. The entire cavity was black and burnt to a crisp. Fire company personnel removed the unit and took pictures to complete a report. They were unable to find this unit on the recall list but said they were documenting the incident. After removing the unit we found where the carpet was burnt in 5 different locations.

The product, in the report: Hampton Bay Dehumidifier HB50-N

I have a Hampton Bay HB50 dehumidifier that I run in my basement in the summer with a hose to a sump pump. I never have it set on the highest setting. Last week a switch and wires caught fire and set off my smoke alarm at 1 am, filling the first floor and basement with smoke. When we got to the dehumidifer, the wires were burning, smoke was coming out the back, and the grill was starting to melt. I rushed the dehumidifier out the back, but the wires continued to burn, so I put it out with a fire extinguisher.

No injuries, but I had to run the fans all night to rid the house of smoke, and the basement still stinks of electical fire. We were out of town the weekend before, so if had happened then there is a chance the house would have burned down.

The product, in the report: biege colored dehumidifier

We do not use our dehumidifier continuously, but we had plugged it in to run in the basement because we were having hot humid weather. Soon after we went out and returned about 3 hours later. We were sitting on the porch and heard our smoke alarm in the basement go off. The dehumidifier had caught on fire and the basement was filled with smoke. I called 911 and my husband managed to get to it, felt that it was not too hot on top to touch, unplugged it and dragged it out through the garage into the driveway where the smoke continued to pour out of it. It had caught fire inside where the cord comes out from. The heat had melted a hole through it and there was a black patch on the floor where it had been standing. When the fire chief arrived, he checked the outlet in the wall where it had been plugged in and found no problem.

Thankfully we were home when it happened and we were able to avert disaster - our home could have burnt down.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier

About 5 AM on the morning of 5/12/2012 our fire alarms went off. We traced the problem to a dehumidifier in the basement. A relay or electronic control in the dehumidifier was smoking. I unplugged the dehumidifier and pushed it outside. Immediately the relay or control caught fire (it probably got enough oxygen to ignite). The unit did not trip the ground fault plug it was plugged into or the 20 amp circuit breaker for that plug. The dehumidifier was a: Hampton Bay Model # HB40-T S/N CP 943072 064E

Local fire department was dispatched to a residential dwelling for the report of a building fire. I responded as the on-duty fire investigator. A moderate smoke condition was found in the basement of the dwelling. The investigation revealed that an unknown malfunction in the dehumidifier resulted in heat damage to the unit and smoke in the dwelling.

The consumer says he contacted the retailer who said they do not know anything about it. The consumer has the same brand but different model number as in Release # 10-082 .
