The product, in the report: Haier 45 pint Dehumidifier Model DE45EK-L, serial number AJ0253E0000ASBBS0688, Off white in color, 13x19x11 inches, The product removes moisture from the air.

The dehumidifier got so hot, it started to melt.

The Haier Dehumidifier Model DE45EK-L, serial number AJ0253E0000ASBBS0688 was purchased new from Walmart in Windham, ME on August 31, 2013.

The unit was used in a finished basement seasonally for a little more than 3 years. Several weeks ago, I went into the basement to check on the unit because it was running and humidity had been very low. I noticed a burning plastic smell as I entered the family room. Upon inspection of the unit, I could feel excess heat coming from the unit. The back of the unit was extremely hot to the touch so I shut the unit off and unplugged the unit. I removed the water collection bucket and there was no water in the bucket. The interior housing of the unit was extremely hot to the the touch, the plastic housing was warped, deformed, discolored and melted.

The unit is a fire hazard. I’m grateful that the unit did not burn my house down. I reported the dehumidifier malfunction to Haier but Haier was unhelpful and unwilling to replace the defective unit. I was told the incident would be reported internally at Haier.

Made Oct 19, 2013, sent to the company Oct 28, 2013, published by CPSC Nov 12, 2013

The product, in the report: Haier model DE45EK-L dehumidifier

I purchased a Haier dehumidifier, model DE45EK-L in March of 2012.

On October 16,2013 when the compressor tried to start, it made a popping and buzzing sound. An orange glow or ember could be seen where the power cord enters the unit and it smelled like something was burning.

I called Haier and was told the unit is out of the warranty period, but that a member of their product safety team would call me in a few days.

This sounds very similar to the issues causing [REDACTED] to recall dehumidifiers, but Haier was not listed as one of the brands involved. Perhaps it should be included.
