The product, in the report: Beige or white dehumidifier. It has a red power indicator light and a dial humidistat controller.
Around August 15, 2017 I noticed my dehumidifier was not functioning correctly.
Around June 1, 2017, I started running the dehumidifier for the summer months in our basement. When I first plugged it in and started it, I thought the compressor sounded normal. The unit seemed to be running fine since I noticed water draining from the bucked to the floor drain. I have a basement office and I started noticing a kind of a low pitched “metallic” sound coming from the unit if I happened to be within earshot. It was one of those things you notice, but assume it is just “normal”.
Then around the 15th of August, I came downstairs and noticed the basement humidity was up and it had that “basement” smell. I could hear the unit’s fan running, but the compressor was not on. I rotated the unit and kneeled down to check the floor drain to look for water coming out of the hose. There was none. I immediately noticed a “burnt, ozone, melted plastic smell” at floor level. I quickly unplugged the unit and began investigating. After taking the back panel off, I managed to pull off the black plastic compressor cap and found a horrendous site. One of the power leads had completely been melted, burnt, and was broken off of the compressor terminal. You can see in the pictures the melted wire, black scorching, and the melted plastic inside the cap. This is a complete fire hazard. I am lucky I was there when I noticed the unit not functioning.

Damage to metal wall of structure due to head but extensive smoke damage to facility and to all eight classic/antique autos stored in area. Only the basic metal structure of the dehumidifier remains, including condenser and compressor unit. The rest is in a solid mass melter into the concrete floor. Cost of Auto cleanup and repair to interior of facility is being estimated and costs will likely exceed $40,000 with no guarantee that all smoke damage to my vehicles can be repaired. The unit in question was a Goldstar unit that was purchased from Home Depot. Another dehumidifier that was running in the area also appears to be a part of another recall but website will not accept the date code that is clearly printed on the unit. This unit has been unplugged.
All damage has been reported to my insurance company and estimates for a total cleanup on all eight cars is currently underway. Work is slated to start on Wednesday, October 26, 2016

The product, in the report: dehumidifier
Gold Star Dehumidifier, model GHD30Y7,S/N 611TABN38309 Just plugged in and started for the season. Within 15 minutes of plugging in I detected smoke coming from the unit. I quickly unplugged the unit. The smoke continued for several minutes afterward. After and hour I removed the back of the unit to see that a fire had started at the top of the compressor and burned off the wiring and pipe insulation. Glad i was in the basement when this occurred. i never realized there was a recall of this product, until this event.

No one hurt Made Jul 27, 2014, sent to the company Aug 6, 2014, published by CPSC Aug 20, 2014
The product, in the report: Goldstar Dehumidifier DH305 line H
We bought dehumidifier Goldstar DH305 Line H serial # 501TAGH18767 from Walmart to remove the moisture from the lower level of our home. We purchased it mid summer and used it for about a month. The next summer we had high humidity again so we turned it on and were using it off and on for a week. One day we went to empty the canister and could not even hold on to the outer unit because it was so hot! We immediately unplugged the unit and had to wait several hours for it to cool down enough to remove it from our home. It was very scary because if we would have left our house that day as planned before emptying the canister our home would not have been there when we returned. My husband is a former firefighter and said the unit needed to be removed and was very unsafe. I cannot understand why this unit was not part of your recall. The picture of our dehumidifier looks exactly like the one being recalled but since my house didn’t start on fire you are not recalling it? This is a very dangerous model and action needs to be taken to have them removed from people’s homes before someone losses their home or even worse their lives! Please respond!

The product, in the report: White dehumidifier, 50 pints/24 hrs
The dehumidifier was being used in an unfinished basement. I was in the first floor watching TV at around 11:30 pm on the November 29th when I heard a few odd cracking noises and started to smell burning. I quickly went to the basement to discover the dehumidifier unit pouring out smoke and flames. After dousing the unit with multiple buckets of water I was able to successfully mitigate the fire. Unfortunately the basement and the rest of the house was filled with smoke that I had to open windows and doors on a night that dipped into the single digits. I am filling out this form because I am concerned of what kind of damage might have occurred had I not been able to act as quick as I did to this fire. The dehumidifier could have burned my house down and possibly injured my family in the process.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
Sometime around the end of July or August 2008 the caller purchased a 30 pint dehumidifier that from the very beginning she heard a slight clicking noise but nothing she thought was any problem. In 2010 when there was a recall and the repair was completed per release# 10-316.
She didn’t have any additional problems with the unit until maybe mid August 2013 when she turned it off but nothing went off. The fan, the heat continued running. She unplugged the product to stop it from running and it has remained unplugged. She is asking that this unit be recalled with replacement as the remedy.
There have been no injuries to report Caller has contacted the recall center and the manufacturer September 23rd, 2013. The manufacturer has informed her that the unit was repaired per the previous recall and had nothing to do with the present recall so there is nothing they can do.

The product, in the report: GOLDSTAR dehumidifier
Goldstar dehumidifier 30- 35 pint. Model DH 305, Serial number 501TAUL17838.
These are being recalled but my model number and serial number does not match the recall, even though my model is exact same one in the photograph on the consumer product safety commission website. I bought this in the same time frame, June 2007 as the recall dates.
It was not dehumidifying very well and the top of the unit was too hot even to touch and smelled very hot. I checked the air filter and it was partially dirty so it was cleaned. I also took the cover off and cleaned the condenser that was partially mattered.
I ran it again for a few hours and again the top of the unit was too hot even to touch and smelled. It was not dehumidifying.
I feel this unit should be part of the recall.

The product, in the report: Gold Star Dehumidifier DH305T7
(8/2011) The consumer stated that his dehumidifier was on for approximately 5 hours during the day. He went to turn the unit off and unplugged it, he noticed that the plug was burnt as well as part of the electrical cord.
The consumer feels that he is experiencing similar problems of Release #11-324. The power connector for the dehumidifier’s compressor can short circuit, posing fire and burn hazards to consumers and their property. The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
On 6/16/2012 The consumer stated that a dehumidifier was on for approximately an entire night inside a church. The following day someone entered the church and then into their office. The person began to smell smoke. After going to inspect the cause of the odor they saw that the unit was smoking, but did not emit any flames. The consumer immediately unplugged the unit.
The person whom works in the maintenance department of the church was called and he inspected the unit. After removing the top and looking inside he saw that the sensor on the evaporator coil was melted and may have possibly had a small fire inside the unit.
The manufacturer has not been contacted yet.
The consumer feels that this unit model should have been included in Release #11-324.

I have a Goldstar dehumidifier that when operated, sounded like an air conditioner going on and off and wasn’t pulling in water and was shutting off abnormally. I initially did research for repair instructions only to find my Goldstar Dehumidifier has a recall on it due to wiring to the compressor. It has been reported to have caused numerous house fires, injuries, etc… I contacted the company and they agreed the model/serial numbers fall in the recall, however, they refuse to help me because they do not like the format of my address. I live in a somewhat rural area so I offered to drive to Albany, NY (the capital of the state) which is 2 hours out of the way to bring it to a service center. The company maintained their refusal to help simply because they did not like my PO Box address. I’m not sure what to do. The PO Box is my physical address. Please help.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier We have had this for 3 or so years.
We have a different Goldstar dehumidifier that is not on the list of recalled ones as it was a little bit cheaper model that we got at Wal-Mart. After I heard about the recall we checked it and a few days later my husband went downstairs and said it was overheating and there was a funny burning smell. He unplugged it immediately so nothing happened but I think this one should be recalled also since it started to over heat. Thanks, [REDACTED]
