The product, in the report: 35 Pint Dehumidifier GE Branded

GE Dehumidifier Model # ADHL35LAQ1 S/N HS041296J was purchased 9/19/2021 from Home Depot [REDACTED], Windham, CT 06256. As of 6/30/2025 it does not operate to dehumidify BUT the black compressor assy is extremely hot that may lead to a fire. This is an FYI if you received similar concerns for this model number. There are no burning wires, no burning circuit boards, no shorted or burning electric cord, JUST the compressor extremely hot.

My dehumidifier started on fire Friday July 21st about 10am, luckily I was home or we would have probably lost our home. I heard a popping noise then a loud winding noise, went down into the basement and seen flames shooting out of the top of our dehumidifier. I unplugged and then kept dumping water on it until it was out. There was no fire damage except for the dehumidifier but I do have a lot of smoke damage. I started researching this dehumidifier and came across a recall on certain ones for fires. We bought it at Walmart quite a few years ago. not sure on the date but the serial # and date manufactured is listed as one of the units that was recalled.

The product, in the report: GE Dehumidifier Model ADEL50LWL1 Serial # DH042057 Date of Manufacture 02/17

The incident involved a GE dehumidifier Model ADEL50LWL1 Serial number DH042057 Date of Manufacture February 2017. I purchase this from Home Depot in Bellingham WA for use in my home in our finished basement. We live in the Pacific NW and definitely need a dehumidifier. I contacted Home Depot Credit Card and they are going to send me statements for 2017 so I can get an exact date and price of this purchase. It was last week that the incident occured and I don’t remember the exact evening but I think it was Dec 3rd or 4th. We, my wife and I were woken up by our dog scratching at the door to go out even though it was raining. When we woke up the house was filled with smoke however it wasn’t enough to set off the alarms. It wasn’t thick smoke but enough that we could smell it and cough because of it. After opening windows to air out the house we started looking around and realized that the dehumidifier was the problem. It was not working. We keep it plugged in and on and it cycles on and off as needed. It was only a bit over two (2) years old. Our previous dehumidifier was an [REDACTED] purchased from [REDACTED] online in June of 2009. That means it lasted 8 years before it died and didn’t fill our house with smoke!! I believe GE needs to handle this with more than an apology. I’d be willing to send them the unit but they need to pay for the shipping.

This is a GE Dehumidifier Model No. AHG40LBG1. It was not among the two sets of recalls recently issued for other GE Dehumidifers; however, it seems to have the same type of defect. The unit was plugged in and operating and caught fire internally. Burned oil and black soot is clearly visible on the unit and it emitted a foul, burning rubber smell. This fire endangered a 2 year old boy.

The product, in the report: aDEL70LRL1 GE Dehumidifier

We had a dehumidifier that we purchased in the past year or two because our previous model was recalled. This one was set at about 55% and running in our basement. I went into the basement the week of April 11, 2016 and smelled burning plastic. The dehumidifier showed 0% on the display and was blowing hot air not warm but hot. I unplugged it and it’s been sitting in our garage unplugged ever since waiting for the recalls to be updated. We haven’t seen our model listed so I thought I’d let you know there may be issues with our model too. No one was hurt and it did not start on fire but the way it was running and the fact it reeked of burning plastic, we weren’t taking any chances.

Our model is GE ADEL70LRL1 and was manufactured 4/13

Subject: Fwd: Concerns with GE Dehumidifier

    Dear Mam or Sir,

Good morning. I’m writing because i have some concerns regarding a GE dehumidifier ADEL70LRL1.

I have two in my basement. One was running significantly more than the other one so i went to check on it. They are both set up with the hose drain and where set to 50% and connected to a surge suppressor. I removed the bin, so i could see if there was an issue with the hose, i found an area to be significantly discolored. I proceeded to touch the area, and found it to be significantly hot. I disconnected the unit. I also noticed a mild smell of plastic burning. Then went to retrieved my infrared thermometer and took several reading. The unit in the discolored area read above 200F.

I then went and checked on the second unit and found no discoloration and the temperature to be around 120F.

I am not sure if there is an issue here or not.

About a week ago my GE model number ADEW50LPQ1 stopped collecting water. I know it was strange because we used to empty it twice a day. I regularly clean the filter, but today I unplugged it and as I moved it, my hand was on the bottom back of the machine...it was so hot that I had to immediately remove my hand or would have sustained burns. I could see smoke coming from the bottom.

The product, in the report: [de]Humidifier

The GE [de]humidifier was not very old at the time, but was run almost continuously in my lower level during that summer. It did a great job eliminating moisture from the air. Unfortunately one evening I checked the water level and it smelled like it was burning. I turned it off thinking it had overheated. It never worked again. After reading about the hazards, I’m grateful that’s all it was. I kept the machine until last fall when I finally put it out for the special garbage pickup.

Note: The consumer could not provide the info as he placed the dehumidifier at the end of his driveway for the garbageman. The consumer is afraid another victim picked it up. It was unsafe- smelling hot and kicking off. The consumer wanted it out of the house. The consumer bought the same model to replace it.

Consumer stated that while the dehumidifier was in use he noticed that there was smoke and a foul odor emitting from it. He immediately unplugged it and place it outside to prevent any damages.

12/2011 Consumer contacted the manufacturer and was advised that it was out of warranty and was not part of the recall.

Consumer feels that this dehumidifier displays similar problems of the Release #11-088 and should included in the recall.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier

We purchased the unit at Yudin’s in Wyckoff, NJ on March 23, 2009. We used it all during the summer in 2009, 2010 and 2011 in our basement.

While we were using it in the basement this summer we had been emptying it by dumping the water on the driveway. Then my husband changed it so it would drain by a hose into the french drain along the basement wall.

In the beginning of August, I could smell something coming from the basement and I went to the basement. There was a strong odor of burning rubber and the dehumidifier felt very hot. I turned it off and told my husband and he took a look at it and decided to plug it back in.

It continuously ran for a month but the basement was still very damp. Finally last week (9/8 or so), he checked and saw it was not working. Since we had been letting it drain on it’s own we didn’t have to dump the water so we hadn’t noticed right away.

The product, in the report: GE dehumidifier, 40 pint, white, Digital controls Model: AHM40LKG1 Serial: AM169722

We were using the dehumidifier in our basement. We had a hose hooked up to it for the water to drain so we didn’t have to empty it. We noticed a hot burning smell for about 3 days and then it went away. At the time we couldn’t figure out what it was. This week we moved the dehumidifier away from the drain and disconnected the hose so it would drain into the collection bucket. We noticed that we were not getting any water in the bucket. Being a maintenance man I opened the unit up to see what was wrong. I noticed the compressor would not run. Looked at the connections on top of the compressor, and you could see that it had been really hot under the cap. The current protection device had blown apart. The insulated crimp on connectors had become hot and the insulation had cracked. Other rubber grommets got brittle and cracked. There was a varnish substance covering everything under the cap. There were marks where the hot wires touched other things. Looked up this dehumidifier online and noticed a recall for it.
