No one hurt Made Aug 29, 2025, sent to the company Sep 30, 2025, published by CPSC Nov 26, 2025
The product, in the report: 50 Pint Dehumidifier
The dehumidifier had been in the off position for approximately 1 day. The consumer turned it on and approximately 30 minutes later it caught fire. The fire started near the rear middle part of the dehumidifier, where the motor is.
The consumer heard odd sounds in her basement, and the area was full of smoke. As she got closer to the dehumidifier, she saw an orange glow near it and turned it off. Seconds later, the dehumidifier caught fire, but she immediately threw a “fire” blanket on it. Her mother also threw water on the fire, and they extinguished the flames.
The consumer called the fire department, who came out and examined the home.
There is a lingering burnt/plastic odor in the home.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Dehumidifier.
We found our 3-year-old Frigidaire dehumidifier in the basement running very loud in the morning. We had it on overnight as usual. It was hot to touch and had a metallic smell. Humidity indicator showed 30% which was lower than our setting. The bucket was only half full which was less than the usual. Powering off did not shut down the unit. We had to unplug it. There was no injury. Model: FFAD5033W1. Serial No: KN01400407. Manufacture date: 03/2020.

The product, in the report: A frigidaire dehumidifier. 25” tall x 9” deep x 16” wide. It holds 70 pints
I have a frigidaire dehumidifier. It was replaced with another unit because a green liquid was coming out of it. The 2nd unit all of a sudden would not stop running, even when turned off. The only way to get it to stop running was to unplug the unit. It would also start to get very hot to the touch. I was afraid a fire may start so I stopped using it.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier
I have a Frigidaire dehumidifier Model FAD504DWD 18 Serial KN61103236. Two weeks ago, checking my basement I detected a hot smell. It was the dehumidifier runnning and blowing hot air. I tried to shut it off using the controls on the dehumidifier, but it would not shut off. I had to unplug it from the receptacle. It would have kept running and possible caught fire. I have contacted Frigidaire and was simply told it was not under warranty. That is NOT the issue. It is a FIRE hazard!

The product, in the report: Fridgidaire 50 Pint Dehumidifier, white color, FAD504DWD19 Problem: Overheating Fridgidaire dehumidifier Problem Description: The air circulation fan intermittently stops running and the compressor continues to run generating very high heat. The unit doesn’t shut off when the “Set-Point” humidity level is met. When switching the unit “OFF” using the top ON/OFF button, the compressor continues to run, while the LED status display is dark, providing the user an erroneous status indication falsely indicating the unit is turned “OFF”. In this condition, the compressor continues to generate very high heat while the unit is OFF. An electrical burning smell was emanating from the unit. Use: The dehumidifier is used in a conditioned basement space. Solution was to unplug the unit before it starts a fire. No injuries or damage, however, unattended this unit has potential to start a fire.

The product, in the report: dehumidifier
3/20/2022: The dehumidifier was in use (length of time unknown), when the consumer noticed the unit was on fire internally and emitting smoke. She consumer quickly unplugged it and took it outside. Once outside, the flames died out on their own.
There is no visible exterior damage to the outside of the dehumidifier itself and there was no property damage to the consumer’s home.
The consumer did not use the water bucket for the dehumidifier. It had tubing, which allowed water to go from the dehumidifier to a pipe in her basement. So that is where the water from the dehumidifier drained directly into.
The dehumidifier model matched one of the recalled numbers (CPSC Release #[REDACTED]), but the serial number did not appear to be included. Model # LAD504TDL Serial #KN01801706
The consumer said she contacted a company and they asked for pictures, but she hadn’t submitted them at the time she filed a report with CPSC. The dehumidifier caught on fire 18MAR22. Calls were made regarding the incident 19MAR22.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire FAD504DWD dehumidifier Model FAD504DWD
I have a Frigidaire FAD504DWD dehumidifier. The model was included in the 2016 recall, but my serial number - KN40302831 - was not included according the https://www.recallrtr.com/dehumidifier website. However, within the last 4 weeks it has started smoking. The compressor sounds like it is on but the fan is not running. The unit gets very hot and then produces a plastic burning smell followed by smoking. It exhibits this behavior even when plugged in but turned off. Unplugging the unit is the only thing that stops the issue. My unit is currently unplugged, but I believe it should be included in the recall.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Dehumidifier Dehumdifier, checked this for recalls, but could not find this model number or serial number on the recall list. Maybe this is the same issue as the others and should be added to the list. Model FAD704DWD
Dehumidifier kept running even when power button was shut off. Fan was not on. Machine started to get very hot, so I un plugged it. Appears the compressor turned on and was running even though the rest of the machine was turned off. The machine runs when ever it is plugged in to the power, even though the power button is switch off.

The product, in the report: 50 pint dehumidifier
Spring 2020: The consumer used the dehumidifier and found that the compressor did not turn off. He immediately turned it off. He is an appliance repair technician and noticed a spark when he turned it off and said the spark was a result of the load. The compressor will not shut off. He put it away and didn’t pull it out again until recently.
9/2020: The consumer used the dehumidifier and turned it off, but the same problem occurred. he remembered the issue from the spring and discontinued use of it.
He searched the Internet and found Recall# [REDACTED]. He entered his dehumidiifer’s information into their site, but his unit was not included. He then tried to call the firm, but their automated system was not working properly.
He is concerned that his unit could present a fire hazard.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 70 pint dehumidifier
My Frigidaire dehumidifier (model FDM70S1, SN KN90822777) became extremely hot (the cabinet was too hot to touch with pulling hand back).I turned the unit off to let it cool down and defrost (although it didn’t appear to need defrosting). I turned the unit on a day later and it quickly became dangerously hot again. I was aware that many dehumidifiers manufactured by [REDACTED] were under recall, although not this particular model. I contacted the recall hotline to let them know that this unit was exhibiting the same dangerous behavior and that they should investigate adding it to the recall list. To this date, I have not heard back from them and they still do not list this model as one affected by the recall, although it seemed to operate in the same hazardous state posing a real fire risk.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 50 pint dehumidifier Model FAD504DWD
I use the dehumidifier in my finished basement and I am down there quite often. Twice in the last month I have noticed a loud and low-pitch buzzing noise coming from the unit. It sounded like the compressor was still running but the fan was off. Very hot air was coming from the top of the unit and it smelled like a burning electric motor. I shut the unit off and waited until the next day. I decided to try it again but would only have it running when I was in the basement. Several days went by with no incident, but then it happened again. Same behavior, but the air wasn’t quite as hot this time, so I must have caught it fairly early. I looked up the model and serial number on the recall website, but it said mine was not affected. However, after reading others’ accounts of these dehumidifiers I believe that the recall should be expanded. I do not trust my dehumidifier and I will never buy another one from Frigidaire or its parent company again.

The product, in the report: 70 pint dehumidifier
6/19/2017: The consumer participated in CPSC Recall #17-024,. The consumer cut the power cord and discarded the dehumidifier, as instructed by the firm.
8/2017 or 9/2017: The manufacturer provided this one as a replacement for the one that was recalled.
Mid-Summer 2019, the consumer noticed that the dehumidifier was hotter than usual during use. He turned it off for a few days. When he tried the dehumidifier again, it seemed to work fine.

The product, in the report: 70 pint dehumidifier
This 68 year old consumer contacted the CPSC Hotline to report that the dehumidifier he purchased online June 10, 2016 had overheated and repeats the overheating very quickly. He is reporting this unit as a severe fire hazard and is asking that it become one of the recalled units. Around October 9th, 2018 the caller and his family went out for about three or four hours but when they returned to their home there was a burning odor throughout it. The caller went to the basement because it seemed to be coming from there to discover that it was his 70 pint dehumidifier that was overheating and was exceedingly hot. He immediately unplugged it and allowed it to cool off. The filter was clean due to having been changed recently and all else was up to care specifications. He waited for several days then plugged the dehumidifier back in and remained with it, however after only one half hour the fan stopped and the dehumidifier began instantly heating to a high heat. He repeated this a couple of days later and it repeated that same process and is not being used at all. There are no injuries being reported. The caller does still have the product. The consumer contacted the manufacturer and the distributor October 15th, 2018 and he was advised that he was outside of the warranty process and there was no assistance.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Dehumidifier
I have a Frigidaire dehumidifier running in my basement. I went down on Saturday, October 7, 2017 and smelled a burning odor. I noticed it was coming from the dehumidifier. The unit would not shut off and the there was a strong burning smell coming from it. I tried turning it off but it would not turn off so I unplugged it. Upon researching for a new one I see the unit is being recalled. Very disappointed in the offer of an inferior replacement or a refund at 1/2 what I paid. Who agreed to this settlement and what are my options? This unit could have burnt my house down and now I get half my money or more junk from this company. It is on a continuous drain so we rarely check on it (sometimes we are not in this room for weeks!!!) How do I know I can trust the replacement?

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier 50 pint
Purchased the Frigidaire dehumidifier FAD504DWD in July 2014 through Staples. Product will not turn off, compressor continues to run and has to be unplugged. Thank goodness I went into the basement to check on it because it was extremely hot. I tried to turn it off and nothing happened. I have it plugged into a surge protector so I quickly disconnected it before it caught on fire. The heat it was producing was so bad it steamed up my glasses as I got near it. I googled my problem and found the recall website. Mine was not on the list since it was made 2 months later than the recall cutoff date (Feb. 2014). These units are a fire hazard! Thank goodness I caught it before it burned my house down!

11/28/2016
We purchased a Frigidaire dehumidifier in Sept. of 2014. Yesterday morning I noticed it sounded different, went to check on it and it was very hot. Wouldn’t shut off, had to unplug the unit. Glad we were home and caught it before it got any worse. Today I went online to see about replacing it and found there has been a recall on these. However our serial number is not in the recall list. Decided we should report this unit as unsafe, too. It could include our model, too, as they are just now recalling the older models, these may not be any safer. Would be great to get a refund or replacement, but doubtful of that happening.

The product, in the report: Fridgidaire FDL50S1 50 pint dehumidifier
For the past several years I have operated a Fridgidair model FDL50S1 dehumidifier in my basement. The dehumidifier was set to maintain 50% humidity and was hose drained to the basement sump. The manufacture date is listed as 03/09 which falls outside of the current recall on this particular model by Gree.
I arrived home for lunch to a strong burning odor and found my dehumidifier smoking slightly, but still running, in my basement. I immediately unplugged the unit and let it cool for 30 minutes. The dehumidifier was hot to the touch.I disassembled the unit the make sure nothing was smoldering before returning to work. The compressor was still too hot to touch, the plastic casing near the compressor was discolored, and the insulation on the wiring to the thermocouple (part of the thermal protection circuit) on the compressor was burnt.Oil was found in the plastic tray underneath the coils. Luckily I caught it in time and no injuries were sustained.
I called the Gree recall hotline at 1-886-853-2802 and provided my name, address, phone number, product model number, manufacture date, and serial number. I was told that it was not covered by the recall and that there was nothing they could do.

No one hurt Made Jun 13, 2016, sent to the company Jun 21, 2016, published by CPSC Jul 6, 2016
The product, in the report: Frigidaire FAD504DWD 50-pint dehumidifier
I purchased a Frigidaire FAD504DWD 50-pint dehumidifier on Sept 1, 2014 through Amazon. I maintained the unit as suggested in the use and care manual (i.e., cleaning filter, dusting the cabinet, and clean the water bucket). On June 4, when cleaning the filter, I noticed a mildew smell emanating from the appliance. I disassembled the appliance and found that the front coil was covered in 1/8 inch layer of mold and sludge. As I started to clean the unit, I realized that there was also debris etc between the two coils and that there is no way to disassemble the coils from the appliance to clean/disinfect.
My husband called Frigidaire (June 4, 7:15 pm) and was told that the appliance was still functional/not broken, so they could not issue a replacement under the 5 year limited warranty. On June 5, I emailed product support reporting what I had found and stating that I was shocked that Frigidaire considers this product functional in this state, rather than a product/health liability. On June 6, I received a response that “When the filter and coils of the dehumidifier are choked with dirt, it may not pull out moisture from the air properly. The efficiency of the dehumidifier gets decreased and the only solution is, to clean it thoroughly. In order to assist you with the cleaning procedure of a dehumidifier, following are a few tips...” One of these cleaning tips suggested that I “Use a vacuum cleaner to clean the evaporative coil/hot coil. Scrub off the dirt using a brush but make sure that you don’t bend the fins while cleaning. Clean the condenser or the cold coil the same way.” Given I didn’t think the appliance could be dissembled allowing access to both coils, I requested detailed information on how to do this on June 6th. On June 8th, I received a response stating: “Do not try to remove the coils of the dehumidifier as this will ruin the appliance. You may use a vacuum cleaner to clean the evaporative coil/hot coil and condenser coil...” On June 8th, I responded and specifically asked for a refund given there is no way to adequately clean the unit without removal of the coils and removal of the coils would ruin the machine. In response, again on June 8th, I was told “I was happy to review your case with my supervisor. Regretfully, mold is not covered by your Manufacturer’s Warranty, so Frigidaire will not be able to provide you with a replacement dehumidifier.” I disagree. Given the current state of the appliance, it is not capable of performing its intended function without serious health ramifications. I contend that this is a direct result of the “defective materials or workmanship” (i.e., poor design) of the product.
Additionally, when purchasing this appliance, the website claimed (as does Frigidaire’s current website) that this appliance “protects your home from mold and mildew caused by excess moisture” and “helps eliminate bacteria in the air that can make breathing difficult.” Instead, this appliance became a major source of mold and mildew within my home. Further, I suspect that it was emanating bacteria into the air for months without suspicion as a direct result of these advertising claims. Given the design of this appliance is prohibits repair (i.e., cleaning), it is not feasible for the unit to function according to these claims, yet Frigidaire considers the unit to be functional in its present state.
I am currently working through the BBB to ideally obtain a refund/resolve my complaint, but think it is important that more people are warned so not adversely affected by this product.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Dehumidifer
I have a Frigidaire Dehumidifier that started making a weird clicking noise and then started smoking. We realized that the clicking noise turned out to be sparks as a fire was starting in the unit. I’m just happy that we happened to be home at the time, so that our house didn’t burn down. Thankfully nobody was hurt in this incident!! After we smelled the smoke we unplugged the unit and haven’t used it again. I then looked up information on this dehumidifier to see if this was normal and saw that it was part of a recall.

The product, in the report: FIGIDAIRE DEHUMIDIFIER
I have a Frigidaire dehumidifier model #FDL50S1 serial #KN90602955 with date code Feb 2009 manufactured by Gree. There was a recall in 2013 for their dehumidifiers overheating and catching fire. I called Gree on 9/12/13 and they said my dehumidifier was not part of the recall. They gave me a reference #[REDACTED]. Last week I went down to my basement and smelled something burning. It was the dehumidifier and it was smoking. When I tried to turn it off by the button on the unit it would not turn off. I had to pull the plug out of the outlet to turn it off. I called Gree today and told them what happened and she said the year 2009 dehumidifiers are not part of the recall, the recall only goes up to the year 2008. I told her the same thing is happening with my dehumidifier as the ones already recalled, and she said she would have to send something to their other department and for me to call back in four weeks! I think they need to put another recall out for year 2009 also!

Our Frigidaire 50-pint dehumidifier emitted a strong burning smell while operating in our basement. The plastic case was quite warm to the touch, apparently from a stalled compressor. The unit is powered by a 15 Amp breaker that did not trip and the dehumidifier fan continued to run. The unit should have shut down completely when the compressor failed. The basement was filled with an intense burning smell, although no smoke was visible.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 70 Pint White Dehumidifier, Model FAD704DWD, Serial Number KN50700665, manufactured in China and sold by Electrolux.
Purchased this Frigidaire Dehumidifier, Model FAD704DWD, Serial Number KN50700665, manufactured in China and sold by Electrolux, from Amazon on July 02, 2015. Further tag information lists a “Service Model No.” as FAD704DWD12, a UL Identifier as SA11089, Design Pressure of 300 Low, 560 High, RA10A:8.820Z and EEV-1.85L/KW.H, AMPS - 7.8A. I could not find UPC Code. This dehumidifier was used on the first floor of our two story, wood frame, 2500 sq. ft., three bedroom home, to control indoor humidity during humid summer days and evenings. It was ordered from Amazon, July 02, 20125 and received July 06, 2015, unpacked, plugged in, and I set humidity level to 45%. The unit worked flawlessly until today, September 13, 2015, when this exact unit, Frigidaire Serial Number, KN50700665, appears to have experienced an electronic control failure accompanied by a mechanical failure, of some kind. Operating for several hours today, around 5:30 p.m., Sunday, September, 13, 2015, it suddenly began making a loud, low frequency, drumming kind of sound. I immediately investigated and discovered the unit’s fan was no longer operating, the display read 30% instead of the 45% it was set for and it could not be turned off. The On-Off switch was unresponsive despite being pressed repeatedly. The unit continued making the noise described above and began to smell like it was overheating and very hot. The filter was perfectly clean and was not a contributor. The bucket was virtually empty and not a contributor. The only way to turn it off was to unplug it. The back panel of the unit felt hot and the entire unit smelled hot. The back panel is easily removed by loosening 7, highly visible, chrome plated, Phillips screws and simply lifting it off. I removed the back panel and the interior was spotlessly clean but the compressor was extremely hot, too hot to even lightly touch. I stood the unit up and let it cool down for about 15 minutes, then replaced the rear cover and all of it’s screws, plugged it back in and pressed the On/Off switch. The unit immediately started up and operation was normal for approximately one minute when the display again reverted from the preset 45% to 30%, the exhaust fan again coasted to a stop, the loud, low frequency drumming sound returned and the On/Off switch was again inoperative and again it was not possible to switch the unit to an Off condition with the On/Off switch. This dehumidifier had electrically and mechanically, locked itself up in a way it could not be turned off, reset, or stopped, without unplugging it and the sound it was making is consistent with a motor driven mechanical device that has mechanically failed but the motor is still trying to drive it. Because the On/Off switch was again inoperative, I had to again unplug the unit to shut it down and it again smelled like it was overheating and excessively hot. I checked the exhaust fan for freedom of movement and it spun very freely when I used a small stick to move the squirrel cage, accessing it from the grill opening on the top of the machine, thus eliminating the fan as a potential source of the problem.
We had received a rebate for a prior Frigidaire dehumidifier recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Division for causing several fires and were informed the unit had been redesigned and was no longer a fire hazard, so we used the rebate to purchase this replacement. However, the same fire hazard condition appears to still exist. If we had not been home to unplug the unit when it overheated from an obvious electronic and mechanical failure, I am 100% confident it had every potential to set itself on fire and potentially burn the house down. I have now completely lost confidence in the Chinese manufactured Frigidaire brand of dehumidifiers labeled as Frigidaire and sold by Electrolux, believing the unit we currently have to again be a serious fire hazard and a threat to occupant safety, not to mention property damage with the potential for catastrophic loss. In my opinion, based on real life experiences with these Frigidaire dehumidifiers, these units are a fire hazard, a threat to family/public safety, and should be removed from the market place.

We were lucky to have been home and in the same room. I e-mailed Fridgedair and all they wrote back was they were sorry and since the dehumidifier was not on the recall list ( that model number is, but not the manufacture date) there is nothing more they can do for me. I wonder if any one else has reported the same problem with their dehumidifier of the same model and manufacture date.

I have a Frigidaire 50 pt. dehumidifier Model FDL50SL MFG Date is 04/09. We purchased this unit from Lowes approximately 3 years ago and have had no problems with it until this morning. The unit made a loud pop then starting POURING smoke out like it was a fogging machine. Since the unit is kept in the basement and we were upstairs, it was loud enough to be heard from an considerable distance away luckily. By the time I got down to the basement to investigate the noise there was so much smoke, due to the unit still running and pouring smoke out, that I had a hard time getting to the plug to unplug the unit. If it would have taken me much longer to get to the unit I had fears that my house could have caught fire. If this would have happened 15 minutes later no one would have been in the house and the home and if the unit didn’t catch on fire, at the least we would have had major smoke damage.

The plug was hot to the touch and had melted from where it was plugged in. The dehumidifier was unplugged to prevent further damages. He researched and his model number is not affected by recall number 13-283.
The manufacturer was not contacted as yet.
Caller feels that this model number should be included in the recall.
The submitter stated that he did notify Frigidaire after his call to CPSC - they responded and declined to do anything.

Fridigaire Dehumidifier Model No.- FDF50S1, Serial No.- KN91213688, Date code- 03/09. This is the same description as the existing Gree recall except for the date code. Unit is located in my basement. Purchased in 2009 and is used 4 months out of the year. The fan would run without incident but when the condenser began it would dim the lights briefly and then trip the circuit breaker. Same thing would happen when plugged into different circuits. The electrical safety of this is concerning had it not tripped the circuit breaker. I contacted Electrolux regarding this safety issue (it was manufactured by them) and their response to me was that it was out of warranty and I had not purchased the extended service agreement so nothing would be done. They also told me that it was “safe to use”.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
I called the Gree recall number and they gave me a reference number - [REDACTED]. This particular dehumidifier was very hot and had an electrical burning smell when I turned it off. It was cracking and popping. I highly suspect that this model should be recalled as well, since it is the same model and just 2 or 3 months from being part of the recall. I need to contact the government to report this situation as well. I do not believe this product was safe to operate. I have another frigidaire dehumidifier that I have unplugged, that I purchased in 2010. Unfortunately, I can not trust these products.
I would like to know why this dehumidifier is not part of the recall, because I suspect it will be once a few more tragic situations occur to life and property. But, I know there is a price tag on everything, including human life.

In the early hours (4:00 am) of February 21, 2014 the [REDACTED] Fire Department got a signal from an alarm system that there was a fire at the [REDACTED] Home located at [REDACTED]. When the fire fighters arrived they found that one of the dehumidifiers located in the basement’s records room had caught on fire and a second dehumidifier of the same brand showed signs of overheating. There was some damage to the room.
The fire fighter stated that if the sprinkler system had not worked and put out the fire the house would have burned down. The fire fighter does not know how long the dehumidifiers were turn on. It took the firefighters about two hours to clear the scene.
The model number, FDD25S1, matches the dehumidifiers that were recalled but the manufacture date falls outside the recall parameters by two months.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire Dehumidifier
I had a problem with a dehumidifier made by Gree. This unit is approx. 4 1/2 years old. I checked your website, and noticed that other similar models were recalled due to fire hazard, but not this size.
It was plugged into an GFI outlet, and it kept tripping the GFI breaker. When I plugged the dehumidifier into a non GFI outlet, the unit would run, but with some serious growling noises. Needless to say, I’m not using this anymore, due to the fire hazard associated with Gree units. Unfortunately,I don’t qualify for a refund under the existing recall because this particular size (25 pint) is not included.
I still have this dehumidifier, and I am going to keep it in case you want to examine it.

The product, in the report: Frigidaire 70 pint dehumidified (sorry I couldn’t find any better category to select, please change as needed)
I purchased a Frigidaire 70 dehumidified model LAD704TDL s/n KN03117713 at Lowes on Dec 6, 2010. I believe this unit is NOT included in the models in the recent Gree dehumidifier recall but I believe it does pose a fire risk. I am no longer using the unit, but due to well... extremely laziness, I still have it in my basement and I happen to work only a few minutes from your Rockville, MD office so I would be happy to bring it by if that is in any way useful for you to examine it. I haven’t modified it or investigated it at all, just happened to keep it until now. The manufacturer sent me a refund but did not seem at all concerned with any potential fire danger or water damage (which turned out to be minor).
Below are some more details copied from an email I sent the manufacturer on July 5, 2012:
In spring of 2012, I noticed the unit was running more frequently than it had been, and seemed to be struggling to keep the humidify at 45% (which it was able to do just fine initially). July 4, 2012, I came home to find that the dehumidifier had tripped the circuit breaker, causing the sump pump it was attached to not run and leaving a fair amount of water in our basement.
I tried plugging the dehumidifier in again and it ran for a few minutes (blowing air and producing water) before tripping the circuit again. I plugged it into a different, lower-capacity circuit and it immediately tripped that circuit. Same for a third circuit. I used a fourth circuit that was 20A and the humidifier ran for 5-10 minutes (again seemingly “working”) and then it made several loud popping noises (that we could hear from upstairs, the unit was in our basement) and smelled like it was burning. It was still running when I went into the basement, and continued to seem like it was running fine until I unplugged it. There was no smoke visible but there was a strong burning/melting smell coming from the unit. I believe if the unit was plugged into the 20A circuit while we weren’t home or there may have been a fire.

Smelled odor in basement. Inspected dehumidifier and found it was blowing warm air but not condensing any water. Removed water tank and found inside plastic very hot. Immediately unplugged and took to garage. Disassembled plastic panels. Placed thermometer on compressor. Read 275 degrees F. This overheating compressor would have started a fire had we not noticed it. WOW we dodged a bullet!
Condenser and evaporator were not plugged however drain line was half plugged with slime. About 2 weeks ago drain line had totally plugged and lower part of evaporator was all froze. Unclogged line and restarted, seemed to be working then.
The compressor says it is thermally protected, Guess NOT. The contacts on the thermal protection device were probably stuck together because they were made of silver with impurities or not made of silver or even silver plate, or just too small for the amperage. If you don’t want the unit to inspect it I will probably cut it apart to see what caused the failure. Yeah you guessed it, I’m and engineer, and just have to know what would have probably burned down our house.

The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
In the late spring of 2008 we purchased a 70 qt Dehumidifier for drying out a flooded garage. We had gotten 4”-8” of water on the floor during snow melt and after dewatering the shop used the humidifier to try to dry out the drywall on the walls. We placed the unit in the middle of the shop floor and shut the doors and kept the unit operating 24 hours a day, checking on it often. After a week or so we were distracted by work and did not check it for a day or so. Upon going into the garage we found a strong small of burned electrical parts and the unit was badly charred. The paint had blistered off except for the very bottom of the unit, the bucket was a melted mass of plastic. The unit was still plugged in and the breaker was not tripped. We assumed the unit had overfilled, spilled and then shorted out the unit and caught fire. We discarded the unit and aired out the garage by opening the door and turning on fans. There was no other damage except for the humidifier which my late wife had purchased in Anchorage for about $300 and sent up to Kotzebue. We attributed the problem to our failing to check on the unit frequently enough and felt ourselves lucky that when the unit burned it was on a concrete floor and nothing else caught fire. It was only upon reading about your recent recall notice that I looked and found the Owner’s Manual for the Dehumidifier and found it on your recall list: Frigidaire Model FDB70R1. We cannot say with certainty that the unit malfunctioned which caused it to catch fire, but it does seem odd that the breaker did not trip and the unit failed within weeks of having been purchased. We had otherwise maintained the unit properly, regularly draining it and cleaning the filter.
