No one hurt Made Dec 6, 2017, sent to the company Dec 14, 2017, published by CPSC Dec 29, 2017
The product, in the report: Dehumidifier
We had an Eva-Dry 2200 dehumidifier in 2 large walk-in closets in the second level of our home. They had worked without incident for over a year. On August 25, 2017, the one in our guest room totally disintegrated, causing severe damage to the closet and its contents, and also causing severe smoke damage to entire second floor of our home. The fire chief stated that if the closet door had not remained closed, the damage would have been much greater to the structure, as well as to myself. The fire chief also stated there was no indication that anything else electrical in the house had been affected and the breaker did not trip. We looked on the internet for reviews of this product that might indicate someone else had experienced this problem but found none. Also asked the question on the Amazon web site where we had purchased the product and no one said they had any trouble with it. We contacted the company and spoke with an individual who suggested we not report it to our homeowners insurance but rather get estimates for repairs and let them know and they would send us a check, as long as it wasn’t over $68,000. They also made some sort of statement that we may have caused this to happen, on purpose. The next time we spoke, we told them we had filed a claim and we have not heard from them since. We still do not have the final costs associated with this fire nor do we know how much our insurance will pay to [REDACTED], [REDACTED] for cleaning of all of the clothing and textiles or for the complete rebuilding of the closet and repainting that had to be done in several areas. We believe this product is dangerous in its design and/or use of certain materials. I was home when this occurred and would not be here today if I had opened that closet door to investigate a noise I heard. When I did investigate a few minutes later, the smoke was so thick and so black in the bedroom, I could not even see light coming in from the windows....just smoke. The remains of the dehumidifier were taken by someone from [REDACTED] to a lab to see if they could figure out what happened to it. We have not heard back from them about the results.
