The reports, as CPSC published them
Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.
Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

No one hurt Made Sep 30, 2025, sent to the company Dec 22, 2025, published by CPSC Jan 9, 2026
The product, in the report: Dehimidifier
The consumer says that the dehumidifier is not on the recalled list, but it has the same problems that the ones that are on the recall list.
It turns on by itself, or it is off but makes noises like it is on. The noises started to get louder, and it also started to get hot. The consumer says that he hasn’t been able to use it anymore because he doesn’t know if it can start a fire.

No incident, no one hurt Made Aug 25, 2022, sent to the company Aug 29, 2022, published by CPSC Sep 13, 2022
The product, in the report: Danby dehumidifier
The dehumidifier in my basement set off the fire alarm and smoke detector. It was 1AM and the alarms went off. Looking for the issue - the basement was very hot (estimate 90+ degrees) - there was no fire just extreme heat. The circuit breaker had one blown circuit - it was the circuit with the dehumidifier. Checked all other electrical systems and appliance - when she touched the dehumidifier it was extremely hot but there was no sign of fire yet - it was the source of the basement extreme temperature. Unplugged and moved the unit outside - police and fire department checked out the basement as well - no additional issue found.

I smelled something coming up from the basement, I went down and noticed the smell of plastic coming from the dehumidifier, the fins of the coils were so hot, the plastic was just about ready to melt, the temperature was 34 and I have it set at 50….the on, off button was useless, would not turn off, had to unplug the dehumidifier, when I did try pushing the start, stop button again after a hour all the lights went off but the machine continued to keep running

9/2021: The consumer checked the internet and found out about CPSC Recall# 21-174. He contacted the firm by phone, sent them an email, and used their chat feature. A rep. called him back after he left the message. The rep. confirmed that both of the consumer’s dehumidifiers were included in the recall. The firm offered the consumer $40 for each dehumidifier. He said he cannot purchase a single dehumidifier for the combined amount. He paid approximately $300.00 each. The firm’s rep. did not offer any further for the dehumidifier that caught fire.
The consumer has 2 identical dehumidifiers, but one of them did not have any issues.

The product, in the report: 70 pint capacity dehumidifier
My 2012 Danby 70 pint dehumidifier overheated to the point of getting so hot the rear of the plastic housing was distorting and the adjacent wood cabinet was getting very warm. In checking on line for warranty info I discovered there was a recall on these, and similar units. While the description stated that 70 pint units were affected, the Danby company told me that my model number was not included in the recall. My model number is DDR7009REE-1, date code is 2012.04, and it was purchased June 24, 2012 from Costco. The model number indicates 70 pints as stated in the recall notice but the company does not have that particular model number on the recall list despite the fact that it was close to doing exactly what the recall presumably was intended to prevent . . . start a fire.

No one hurt Made Mar 3, 2016, sent to the company Apr 14, 2016, published by CPSC Apr 28, 2016
The product, in the report: Dehumidifier Canada Danby Service Department contacted 03/04/2016 and the consumer was informed average life of dehumidifier is 5-6 years. When told he had a 23 year old [REDACTED] that was still operable he was asked to email Danby Consumer Affairs as they do not provide a phone number. At the moment he has not contacted that department and based on attitudes of service center not sure it would be helpful. He is annoyed that this unit has failed but he is frightened to think of the consequences of the overheating; (it was very hot) had we not come home in time to shut it off. Homes and memories do not come cheap!
03/02/2016 - The consumer indicates the dehumidifier was emitting a strange sound, like a relay switch or compressor. The consumer indicates the unit would not shut off even when he tried shutting off the power switch. The consumer disconnected the power chord from the outlet and this turned the unit off. At this point the outside of the dehumidifier was painfully hot to touch and if the unit remained on he was afraid of fire.
The consumer took the dehumidifier apart, vacuumed it, and plugged it in. The consumer states that the unit turned on immediately even with the power button in the off position. The consumer unplugged the unit from the wall. There had been no changes to “clacking” sound emitted.
The consumer indicates the unit had been on for a couple of hours at least. The consumer indicates the unit is on 24/7 but automatically shuts off when it reaches the level it was set on. The consumer states the dehumidifier filter is cleaned every couple of weeks.

No one hurt Made Nov 11, 2015, sent to the company Nov 24, 2015, published by CPSC Dec 9, 2015
The product, in the report: Danby Premier DDR7009REE dehumidifier; serial #2110090700815; 70 pint; white in color
I purchased a Danby Premier DDR7009REE dehumidifier (70 pint) from an online retailer on or about 04/20/2011. The serial number is 2110090700815. This year it failed to remove moisture from the air. Upon moving the dehumidifier I noted a discoloration on the carpet beneath the unit. Closer exam of the disassembled unit indicated extreme heat beneath and around the thermally protected compressor significant enough to melt and discolor the unit’s plastic shell. The damage to the carpet is in the shape of the compressor bottom. Pictures are available.
This unit is not listed as included in the large recall (Recall date: May 15, 2014; Recall number: 14-179) detailed on the Gree or the Consumer Product Safety Commission websites, yet the malfunction and resultant damage appear consistent with recalled units.
I have contacted Danby Consumer Services. I was informed the unit should be serviced at my cost. At no time did a representative from Danby indicate a willingness to investigate the incident further.
I bring this to your attention as a possible safety hazard and to seek any assistance with remediation.

The product, in the report: Danby Premier dehumidifier Model DDR7009REE, Serial #2111030701859
Danby Model DDR7009REE dehumidifier was being used in the crawl space of a house. It was 4 years old (installed 7/2011). The electrical control panel in the unit overheated, melted the insulation off the wires, and completely broke one wire loose from its connector. The inside of the plastic electrical control box was black. No fire outside the box.

No one hurt Made Jul 16, 2014, sent to the company Jul 29, 2014, published by CPSC Aug 12, 2014
The product, in the report: Danby 60 pint dehumidifier, model DDR6009REE
Lights dimmed briefly, then the circuit breaker blew. Not being positive what blew the breaker, I disconnected a few things, turned off the lights and reset the breaker. After about a minute, it blew again. That time I saw a flash (the dehumidifier was near the breaker box) and I realized the dehumidifier was the cause. I also detected a slight smell of heat/burnt wire insulation.
Since the unit was out of warranty, I decided to open it up to see if it was something as simple as a short in the power cord where it entered. It wasn’t. What I found disturbed me and makes me concerned that the unit has been a potential fire hazard all along.
One of the wires running to the compressor had its insulation worn through, presumably due to vibration over time where it rested against a metal stud that holds a cover over the wiring where it enters the compressor. Due to the arcing, the metal stud was mostly burnt through! The insulation of that and the other wires going to the compressor also seemed hard/brittle from heat at the last couple inches before the compressor. I can’t say for sure whether it was from heat over a long period of time or heat from the short that blew the breaker, but typically insulation doesn’t get stiff like that from one brief heating, and therefore I suspect the wires had been getting hot over time, which could also explain why the insulation wore through and allowed the short circuit. (I would think this issue could have been avoided if it had been manufactured with better quality wire -- better insulation and/or heavier gauge wire, and some foam or heavy heatshrink insulation over the stud....or routing the wiring so it couldn’t come into contact with the stud and wear. Minimal cost at time of manufacturer.)
I immediately checked to see if the unit had been recalled, but it was not one of the models that are part of the current Danby / Gree recall. I can’t help but wonder, however, it the problem is similar to what happened in the recalled models.
I called the manufacturer, Danby, gave them this information, and then emailed the representative pictures of the burnt wiring. The manufacturer’s representative was very kind and interested in the issue, but said she could do nothing since the unit was out of warranty, but that she would forward the information and the pictures on to the appropriate people to look at the info from a safety issue.
I have not heard back yet, but that was only yesterday. In the mean time, I decided to file this report to serve as a warning to others to at least be on the lookout for the issue.
This appears to be something that can likely be repaired, and if done properly, repaired in a way that it won’t happen again in the future, BUT as manufactured, I believe the dehumidifier to be unsafe, especially since dehumidifiers are often located in basements and areas that are generally unoccupied and therefore less likely to be noticed if giving off smoke, sparks, or a hot smell.
