The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Hospital admission

Made Sep 15, 2026, sent to the company Sep 18, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 3, 2026

The product, in the report: Safety 1st ultrasonic humidifier model IH497

I used a Safety 1st ultrasonic humidifier, model IH497, manufactured/distributed by Dorel Juvenile Group. I subsequently discovered mold growth associated with the humidifier. After using the humidifier, I developed illness that I believe may have been associated with exposure from the unit. The illness resulted in my missing work on August 21, 2026.

I contacted Dorel/Safety 1st Consumer Care on August 19, 2026 regarding the product but did not receive a response.

I have preserved the humidifier photographs of the product, mold, model/date-code label, and documentation relating to my contact with the manufacturer and work absence.

I am reporting this because of concern that the humidifier may permit or contribute to microbial contamination that can subsequently be dispersed during operation.

The product, in the report: Ultrasonic Humidifier Blue water reservoir, white base with green accents

We have used the Safety 1st Humidifier in my son’s room pretty consistently for the first six months after he was born in August of 2011. We then had central humidification installed on our furnace and the unit was cleaned and stored for several months. We took it to our cottage that we use on weekends, and began using it for a few weekends a month when we visited our cottage. The unit was emptied, cleaned, and unplugged when not in use. This weekend the unit ran out of water, but instead of the automatic shut-off engaging, when we were putting our son to bed, we could smell burning. We didn’t realize it was the humidifier, and we filled the water reservoir, which then emptied out through the hole that had melted in the bottom of this unit, all over our raw pine floors. We quickly unplugged the unit and attempted to clean up the water. We discovered the plastic had melted through the unit both visibly evident on the top and the bottom of the base. We were very grateful that it didn’t catch fire.

The product, in the report: Humidifier

The consumer says yesterday 10-1-2013 the humidifier was knocked over but it was not noticed immediately. The unit then overheated and melted the plastic housing.

He says there was a strong plastic burning smell so he unplugged the humidifier. The unit has a switch that is supposed to turn the unit off when the water is low. However the switch remained on when the unit was turned upside down. The consumer submitted an online form to the manufacturer today and is awaiting a response
