The product, in the report: It’s a white warm mist advertised as 25 gal but holds only 1.5 gal water Optimus U32000 Humidifier
I bought a Optimus 15Gal Warm Mist Humidifier White SKU: 1648407 online from www.bestbuy.com on Dec. 18,2013. Several days later it was delivered and I set it up two days later after reading the instruction booklet. It did put out a good amount of mist and was fairly quiet. I did notice that it had three lights on top, one for on/off, one for humidity, and one for refill. The humidity and refill light did not go on even when it was no longer producing steam and out of water, but otherwise it was working. Thought maybe it has to be completely dry for these lights to activate, but there was always residual water in the tray. I removed the water tower and steam tower looking for calcium deposits, but there were none, just a little brown sludge. I noticed a somewhat pungent, acrid smell from when I first started using it. I thought it was from the plastic and new parts and that the odor would go away. When I saw that it was out of water, I would refill it, or turn it to “off’ and fill it a several hours later. The smell was irritating my sinuses and lungs. It caused shortness of breath that is still affecting me. On Jan. 26, 2014, I turned it off, waited 30 minutes and removed the two towers. The heating element was still very hot, and the “white” filter was brown and had a burnt smell. So I unplugged it to cut the electric power since obviously the on/off switch not turning off and stuck “on.” I tried to remove the filter, but it was fused to the heating element. I soaked the filter in some vinegar water and finally able to remove it, but it looked brown and burnt, and found some brown stained calcium deposit on the projected heating element around which the wrap around filter goes with a [fastener] strip. By comparison, the [REDACTED] humidifier I bought at Best Buy at the same time still works well and never had an odor, and has no filter and the heating element is cleaned once a week or so with vinegar water depending on the amount of calcium deposit. My complaint is that I think there is a design flaw in this humidifier and it is unsafe since it never turns off and out gasses fumes from the overheated filter. Perhaps the closely fitting filter is causing the overheating problem? It kind of frightened me that it could possibly have caused a fire and burned down my house. I don’t know if it is the only one, or there might be thousands of malfunctioning units of this model, or similar units, out there endangering people. That is why I am reporting it. I contacted the manufacturer, who has not replied. I contacted Best Buy, and about an hour later I received a phone call asking me more questions and they were concerned and would give me a refund. They had UPS send me a return label that is good for ten days. Of course, once I send it back, it can no longer be examined, so I am wondering what to do.
