  1. Hurt, no treatment

The product, in the report: Mainstays Round Ultrasonic Cool Mist Top Fill Humidifier with Aroma, Black. This is a Walmart house brand.

Likely electrocution/fire/burn hazard. This is in reference to the item Mainstays Round Ultrasonic Cool Mist Top Fill Humidifier with Aroma, Black purchased from Walmart. Mainstays is their house brand. The humidifier has too weak of a spring on the check valve that allows the tank to refill the humidifier base. This results in the silicone valve seal not fully seating against the sealing surface. About 3-4 drops per second make it past the seal. Over the course of about 2 hours, this allows for the humidifier base to overfill and leak into the internal electronics portion of the base. Water shorted the internal nightlight and was running out of the base and down the power cord. Further, water was found inside the lower housing, a region that should not be exposed to water. Additionally the overfilled humidifier base heated the water to the point of burning ones hands when trying to pour out the water. This event occurred on the first use. This was not a one-off manufacturing defect. This seems systemic. Multiple units from this store exhibited the same leak due to the weak spring. Likely, an entire batch of these contain the inadequate spring. This will lead to burns, electrical hazards, and/or fires.

The product, in the report: Mainstays humidifier (Model HF3190W-UL) White

On Friday, November 14th 2025, a White Mainstays humidifier (Model HF3190W-UL) caught fire in our home. At approximately 2:05 PM, my husband returned home and immediately smelled smoke in the house. Seconds later, the upstairs fire alarms activated. The smoke was coming from the humidifier located in our upstairs bedroom.

The device was actively burning from inside the unit. The plastic housing had melted open and flames were visible. My husband attempted to extinguish the fire using a fire extinguisher, which helped some but the flames continued. He then carried the burning humidifier with his bare hands into our hallway bathroom and placed it in the bathtub, where he doused it with water until the fire was fully out.

While he was working on the fire, I called 911 at 2:07 PM, and the fire department arrived within minutes to clear the home and ensure the fire was completely out.

The fire caused damage to the carpet, subfloor, hallway flooring, and a wooden bench. There is smoke odor throughout the second floor and faintly through the rest of the home. My husband inhaled smoke while suppressing the fire.

The humidifier bears an ETL certification mark, and it appears that the ignition originated internally. The top is completely melted, internal components are charred, and the wiring is visibly burned.

The unit was purchased approximately two to three years ago. We still have the burned device and can provide photos or the physical unit if needed.

This incident created a significant fire hazard, physical risk, and property damage.
