The product, in the report: Homedics Portable Humidifier, Model UHE-CMP15 ,White. It was a bonus with the purchase of a Model # UHE-WMTF185. Dimensions: H 6.89 in, W 2.52 in, D 2.52 in. Auto-shutoff

*Our Homedics personal humidifier (UHE-CMP15) started to melt and almost caught on fire. *My husband just started using the humidifier within the past week. It was plugged in next to his bedside table. *Earlier in the day, I smelled an odd odor like melting plastic. I kept looking for it and finally discovered it. I lifted the humidifier to see if it was the source. It burnt my hand. The charging cord and the site of receptacle on the humidifier melted and fused together. The cord separated from the unit leaving the metal end in the receptacle. If left any longer, it may have started a fire.

The product, in the report: Homedics Ultrasonic 2 gallon Humidifier sold at Costco up until 2023. I do not have the original box that had the SKU number and UPC code

We purchased two Homedics ultrasonic humidifiers from Costco this last fall and put both in service in late October. We followed the owners manual and used our tap water which it said you can do. By mid December I was having constant shortness of breath and a very productive cough. My wife experienced only the productive cough but I had one of the units right by my bed in my bedroom at night. Come January 1, 2023 I had to go to the ER, thinking I was having a heart attack with chest pain and difficulty breathing. I was not, and was sent home with instructions to see a cardiologist and a pulmonologist. After those visits I was put on night oxygen, an inhaler, given an EKG, a nuclear stress test, pulmonary function test, sleep study, two week heart monitoring, echocardiogram, and numerous other tests. I had the feeling that I was dying. It continued and on April 4th, 2023 I was again in the ER at the direction of my primary care physician to get a chest CT due to the doctor thinking I was having a pulmonary embolism. In early April I had indoor air quality monitoring done and found the indoor AQI was over 400 and PM2.5 was over 200. Thinking it was from dust we had all our carpets cleaned and no change to the indoor air quality. As the weather became warmer in mid April, we opened windows for the first time since November and the AQI and PM2.5 fell to near zero with the ultrasonic humidifiers off. That night it was cold so we closed the house up again and turned the humidifiers back on, only to see the AQI and PM2.5 climb to oner 100 with just a few hours. Mystery solved. The ultrasonic humidifiers were aerosolizing the minerals in our water to a toxic level indoors even with air filtration purifiers running. The pulmonologist says that my lungs may take up to a year to heal and may never return to what they were before the exposure due to the Homedics ultrasonic humidifiers.

The product, in the report: The product is a Homedics® Ultra Sonic Humidifier, its the model where the tank has a unclear frosted material which makes light hard to get through and encourage the growth of pink mold (which needs moisture and lack of light)

The first incident was a few months after I got the product for Christmas of 2021, my Homedics Ultra-Sonic Humidifier was on during the night, I woke unable to breathe in the morning, my chest was very tight, I had pain in my head. I had left my room and when I came back I was able to notice a very off putting smell. Then I opened the window despite the extremely low temperature outside to get in fresh air, and after a few hours the room smelled better and my head pain decreased and I could slightly breathe better. I went outside for a walk and when I came back I started to feel somewhat better but still had some breathing issues which took a week to recover from fully. I had found that same day my homedics humidier was coated in pink mold. Then after researching how dangerous pink mold is, I cleaned the entire product per instructions, but the pink mold was also in places not part of manufacture cleaning so I had to take the cleaning into my own hands, but some pink mold was unable to be removed do to the deep crevices it got itself into. Then after cleaning it and using it again a week after I felt better since I was very scared to use it again, The pink mold stay away for a few uses but then slowly started to come back regardless of cleaning and cycling with new water. I had 2 more incidences of this, one in 2022, and one just recently in jan of 2023. I emailed the manufacture and they didn’t see the concern and only offered a replacement if I had a receipt which I don’t, and brought up a bigger issue that (at the time of writing this report I found they apparently make the same model design, but with a clear tank,) and instead of offering that to me they ignore the health safety concern there product induces on to all ppl who own it. The company doesn’t take designing there products and all the health risks involved into consideration.

The product, in the report: Homedics-branded white plastic ultrasonic dehumidifier with a clear plastic 1.4 gallon tank. 14” x 12” x 8” approx H x W x D. Sticker in the front with large “TOTAL COMFORT HUMIDIFIER” text

Humidifier had stopped automatically after using up all the water, as designed. The device remained plugged into the wall outlet. Approximately six weeks later, I noticed an unpleasant burning smell which originated from the humidifier. Parts of the humidifier were very hot to touch, and the ultrasonic element had melted off.

The product, in the report: Homedics Total Comfort Deluxe ultrasonic humidifier UPC 3126209845 Model Uhe-wmtf185

My new Homedics Total Comfort Deluxe ultrasonic humidifier started on fire after plugging it in for only the second time. I plugged it in and set the humidity level and went to leave the room. As I turned around to shut the door, smoke started pouring out from underneath the humidifier. In the few seconds it took me to reach the humidifier and unplug it, my entire upstairs was filled with smoke. If I would have just walked out of the room my house likely would have caught on fire. I brought the humidifier downstairs- it was extremely hot to the touch- and put it in the sink to spray water on it in case flames broke out. After letting it sit and cool down, I decided to try and get a video of the humidifier melting down. I plugged it in where I knew it would be safe and started recording. I did get a video of smoke pouring out of it. I have now contacted Homedics multiple times and let them know what happened and they will not get back to me. They sent me a link to review my new humidifier- except when I tried two times to warn people and say that mine had started on fire they sent me two emails saying they could not use my review and would not post it. Homedics seems to be avoiding me and I can’t get anyone there to help me and it also seems they are trying to hide this info from the public. As I stated, I do have a video of smoke pouring out of the humidifier but when I try to upload it, it says the file is too large even though it is only 8 seconds long. I will save the video in case there is another way to send it to you.

The product, in the report: Room humidifier.

My HoMedics UHE-WM350 Humidifier began to give off an electrical smell. It was still running. Since it sits on a Hardwood floor, I have an oval plant tray underneath in case of leaks. The tray was full and slightly overflowing (maybe a pint of liquid). I unplugged the unit. I emptied the tanks and thoroughly dried the unit overnight. I inspected the water channels under the tanks and the membrane for obvious cracks or leaks and found none. I plugged the unit back in to see if it powered up. It did. I refilled the tanks, restarted it, and watched it carefully, the same thing happened again. I decided that the unit needed to be retired. Out of curiousity, I opened the fairing and discovered affected electronics from an unidentified internal leak. The affected electronics were high in the compartment, and there is some sort of tray/cover that shows and ongoing leak. The rust makes it appear that this was an ongoing issue, and a very likely fire hazard. I contacted HoMedics via email with pictures. They created a case number, but when I called 48 hours later, they still hadn’t looked at the photos. I informed them that I thought this unit may deserve a recall.

The product, in the report: CoolMist Homedics humidifier.

On March 26, 2018, a homeowner observed a flame emanating from the bottom of a Homedics humidifier,Model UHE-CM25TGTA. She immediately unplugged the unit. The home owner’s husband, a fire chief for the local fire department, contacted this writer, (fire Marshal), re the incident. I advised him to bring it to the office, (fire marshal’s office), and that I would examine it.

I disassembled the unit and observed burn/soot marks in the units interior. I removed a circuit board that was secured in place via two screws. When I lifted the circuit board off of its mounts, I observed a scorched wire in the two wire power cord, that was directly beneath the circuit board. I traced the shorted wire and found that it was the hot side of the power cord. The underside of the circuit board possessed many sharp edges. These edges were formed by the penetrations of the components that were soldered (bottom side)and mounted on the topside of the board. The pointy projections sat directly on top of the power cord There was no protection afforded to the power cord. Without any buffer material to protect the cord from being abraded or penetrated by the circuit board components, the underside of the circuit board shorted out to the power cord.

I believe the home owner’s presence in the room and quick action, prevented the event from growing into a larger problem.

The product, in the report: I had 2 different brands of ultrasonic humidifiers . the large one downstairs and a small one in my bedroom - Homedics

I have a pollution sensor in my house and the ultrasonic humidifier was making my air pollution levels above the red unhealthy zone. I have since removed them and my air is back to normal but I have been fighting respiratory problems that the humidifiers have contributed to I am sure. Since I have stopped using them my health is slowly improving. I used purified water and cleaned them every 2 or 3 days. there needs to be a warning on these for people who have respiratory issues . Thank you

The product, in the report: Homedics Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier Model # 865103

I used the Humidifier last winter without issue. This year, I cleaned the unit as I normally did, filled the tank and set it up for use. It functioned but the output control knob did not seem to change the amount of vapor being produced. I assumed the switch was faulty, but it was outputting water vapor so I let it run. The next night, the Unit was working intermittently. I shut it off and did not use it. The next morning, I unplugged it and brought it downstairs to see if the switch was replaceable.

Upon opening the bottom of the housing, I could smell something had burned and the control circuit board was all burned and melted. I don’t know how it did not start a fire or that I could not smell anything until the case was opened. It nearly melted a hole through the bottom of the case.

The product, in the report: Baby humidifier

Consumer stated that the baby dehumidifier overheated and the electrical wires melted for the motor. She stated that while the unit was on for approximately 1 hour, she went in the room because she did not hear the sound machine any longer. She noticed that the room was misty and it smelled like burnt plastic. This was the second dehumidifier that was sent to her because the first one had the similar problems. The dehumidifier was unplugged and stored.

The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that she would be sent a coupon that she can order a different unit online. She will be returning the unit to the company. She is concerned that this unit could have caused a house fire if she was not attentive. Consumer feels that this dehumidifier should be recalled because of the fire hazard it poses.

The product, in the report: Room Humidifier

This is a Homedics Oscillating Ultrasonic w/Warm&Cool Mist; model HUM-WM75. Purchased the unit in January of 2011. The unit started to leak water around January of 2012. Water is leaking under the unit through the base where holes are located for cooling. Looking through the holes you can see all of the wiring for the unit. The wiring appears to be directly where the unit is leaking. The potential for an electrical shock appears to be here. Looking at various sites which sold this unit this appears to be a very common problem that had been reported.

I purchased the Homedics HUM-WM75 Cool/Warm Mist Ultrasonic humidifier in October. After two months, the unit started leaking water from the bottom. Upon examination, the base has melted plastic where the circle of holes in the center is located. This product came with a one-year warranty.

After looking at the reviews of this product on Amazon.com, this is a common problem and a dangerous product.

Report of design defect When replacing water in a “Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier” Model HUM-CM50, distributed by HoMedics, http://www.homedics.com/?gclid=CNbljMi_ua0CFYUZQgodNnO0nQ I followed the instructions filling the water tank at the fill location on the bpttom of the tank and ther replaced the cap. I then inverted the tank. Again following the instructions, I picked up the water tank using the handle on the top as illustrated in the instruction manual. The handle broke away from the water tank and crashed to the floor and broke. Fortunatley it did not fall on my foot as the sharp edge of the bottom of the tank could cause serious injury. This is a design defect that can easily result in the tank with sharp edges on the bottom side dropping with the weight of the water. That sharp edge of the plastic tank could damage exposed flesh or if falls on the electric cord during the reinstallation of the tank potentially sever the insulation on the electric cord, the tank break and flood the floor with water causing and accidental electrocution of the product user. The plastic foldable U-shaped handle is attached to the tank only by two small tabs approximately a 1/4 inch in length. The installation of the handle at manufacture is simply by expanding the handle and then it returns to original shape. With the added weight of the 1 gallon of water in the tank, the handle readily disengages from the retaining slots. With the shape of the handle being U shaped and approximately 3 and 1/8 inches wide and only approximately 1 and half inches deep even a person with small hands when inserting four fingers and picking up the tank will cause the width of the handle to expand and disengage the handle tabs from the slots.
