  1. Emergency room

Made Feb 26, 2018, sent to the company May 10, 2018, published by CPSC May 24, 2018

The product, in the report: Bionaire ultrasonic tower humidifier

My adult children and roommate were awoken on 2/10/2018 at 4:15 am to approximately 3 foot high flames coming out of the base of the Bionaire BUL7933 humidifier. The roommate has owned this humidifier and has stated that he used it accordingly without incident for approximately 6 years. With the unit aflame, my son did what he could - he unplugged the unit, and grabbed a towel to smother the flames. Unfortunately, the plastic had melted and he was injured by the hot liquid plastic which also resulted in his hand being briefly on fire. They did succeed in putting out the fire, but not before the injury as well as burning and scorching of the carpet.

I have only today been in touch with the company, and am awaiting a call from their Consumer Incident Report department.

The product, in the report: Bionaire Clean Mist 4 Humidifier w/ dual reservoirs

Bionaire Clean Mist 4 humidifier reservoirs were filled with water. Left running in children’s room. Started emitted heavy smoke. One child left room coughing. Parent came up to room, saw smoke, and unplugged the unit. No one injured. However, if this had happened when the children were sleeping, we might not have been alerted before a fire began or the kids were asphyxiated.
