The product, in the report: MayTag Gemini
[REDACTED] says her stovetop turned on by itself, overheated and exploded. The oven is currently in her driveway, stovetop is shattered. She says hot glass was sprayed throughout her home damaging a rug, flooring and other materials. There was also a can on top of the stove that was launched through the ceiling. Ask her to show you all of those damage elements inside. She said she has grandchildren and if they were home when this happened they could have been killed.

The product, in the report: Maytag stove/oven push I. Stainless steel with steam clean function.
We bought a Maytag stove about two years ago. Last week we came home to find a fire between the outside wall and inside wall of the oven. We saw flames in this area and shut off the oven immediately. My husband spoke to a coworker who had the same thing happen. I can get you a photo of the back of the stove when we pull it out the end of December when a new one arrives from a different company

No one hurt Made Jun 1, 2020, sent to the company Jul 7, 2020, published by CPSC Jul 21, 2020
The product, in the report: KitchenAid Slide In Range Model No. KRFC704SS
We purchased a Kitchenaid 30 inch 4-Element Electric Downdraft Slide -In range from Albert Lee Appliance on January 19, 2020 (KRFC704FSS02). It was delivered and installed in April of 2020. The first time I used the oven I set it on 425. I accidentally grazed the left side of the metal vent that runs along the back of the range. It was unbelievably hot - burning hot! I assumed there was something wrong. I contacted Albert Lee who spoke with Whirlpool. Whirlpool advise them there was nothing wrong with my range. Then I called Whirlpool myself thinking there was an error. I was informed that they would send someone out to look at it but if nothing was wrong we would pay the service fee. I told her it didn’t matter. It needed to be looked at. The service man came the following week. I was very disappointed with outcome. I was advised by the technician that he had been to other calls regarding this slide in model. He had been on service calls where the oven actually scorched the wall behind it. Ours, however is installed in a small island that people should be able to sit around and visit while the oven is on. He advised me that it was just a “bad design” on Whirlpool’s part and that there was nothing that could be done about it. Now I have no choice but to make sure my family stays clear of an island I wanted to have people sitting around and visiting while we were cooking. How could they design something like this? Someone is going to get hurt. I hope it’s not a child.

The product, in the report: Maytag Stainless steel MER8674AS Serial R31826911 Stove
I heard a loud noise and the lights flickered, so I went to check on the food that was in the oven, at the time. I saw an odd light in oven and when I opened it, I noticed it was actually flames and a lot of smoke came out of it. I closed the oven and turned it off immediately. That is when the fire inside the oven stopped. This was not the result of food or grease falling into the eating element.

The product, in the report: Jennair range model #JDS9860AAP
On 3/9/18 we were using our Jennair range, Model #JDS9860AAP to cook a pizza at 425 degrees F. The outer door to the oven shattered into a million tiny pieces all over our kitchen floor. There was nothing preceding this event, there was no damage to the door. I have swept, vacuumed, mopped, and continue to get shards of glass in my foot. I have a 4-year-old and am horrified to think this could have happened while she was in the kitchen.

The product, in the report: Free standing oven
Caller is reporting that her oven came on spontaneously by itself during the night. She was awakened a beeping noise and noticed that the unit was powered on, they could not cancel the operation and had to unplug it. This incident occurred twice. Caller stated that when the oven came on the odor smell like the oven clean mode was on.
The manufacturer was contacted and she was advised that a technician would be sent out for inspection in a few days, however, she stated that she could not be without a unit so long and they could not guarantee that a repair could fix the problem. She has since purchase another oven.
Caller feels that this oven is a fire hazard and should be reported.

MY maytag stove was purchased Jan 28, 2014. IN nov the broil would come on when you were baking something. The bake element still works. But it switches to broil on its own. Handy. It was repaired Nov 24. Something to do with the clock. ON Dec 11 it did it again, the broil comes on when it is in bake mode. Whirlpool says that is fine....they will repair it again. The product, in the report: Maytag double oven Model# MET8775XW01
Bought a new Maytag double oven to replace my 7 year old one. Went to perform the self clean for the first time on the top oven and after about 40 minutes I could smell an odor and investigated. I found the cabinet drawers next to the oven starting to melt/burn and stopped the cycle right away. I don’t know what would have happened if I let it continue and I will not use that feature now. Even when I use the oven for cooking it seems to be really hot around the edges. I contacted Maytag and they sent a tech to check the oven. The tech said everything was operating properly and I should pull the oven out to self clean in the future, because they are making them to be hotter than ever for cleaning. NOTE- I never had a problem with my [REDACTED] oven when I did a self clean. It was mentioned that my laminate cabinets were to blame, because they are not UL rated. I contacted the cabinet maker and the cabinets comply with the ANSI/KCMA A161.1-2000. They also said that the appliance manufacturers are making the self clean ovens too hot. I feel this is a real concern for those that have this type of oven because who knows what would have happened if I was not right there. The Maytag safety supervisor ([REDACTED]) contacted us only to tell us that “we should have asked Lowes if the oven is ok to use with laminate cabinets before we bought it”! I looked in the manual and there is nothing about laminate cabinets in it and when I mentioned that to the safety supervisor ([REDACTED]) she said “We will have to add that to future manuals”. Also, it is well within the clearance margins set by the installation manual.

The product, in the report: Maytag range
Oven racks do not fit the oven causing them to fall with very little weight/pressure.
I have had several incidents where the racks have dropped while holding hot casseroles, turkeys, & pot roasts. They fall to the bottom of the oven and cause hot grease/liquids to spatter.
When researching this dangerous defect, I found this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePS3CysxQ7M) with MANY comments reporting the same problem.

No one hurt Made Feb 12, 2013, sent to the company Feb 21, 2013, published by CPSC Mar 15, 2013
The product, in the report: A Maytag, black range, smooth cooktop with a glass window in the door. Model: MER5755QAB Serial #: 18920259GP
On Sunday, February 10, 2013 at about 10:00a.m., I took hold of my oven door handle to open it when the entire exterior front of the door exploded out at and on me and the shards/pieces flew across the kitchen. The oven was NOT turned on and NEITHER was the stove top, it had not been on since the previous evening. I was wearing jeans so other than my knees stinging from the impact, I did not suffer any injuries. I was very startled and it took my husband and I repeated sweepings, vacuumings and washings to get all the tiny shards of glass off the floor. Although I was lucky not to be injured, the potential for serious injury was enormous. If I had been bending down to look through the glass, the explosion would have caught me in the face and throat. Worse, yet, if one of my 4 small grandchildren had been in the kitchen, the explosion could have very well been deadly to them. Since it was Sunday, the Maytag Customer Service Department was not open so I found a site online where I completed two different reports to Maytag. The next day, February 11th., a Maytag representative called me regarding my reports and I went through the details with her. The representative expressed her sympathy for my experience but said there was nothing else that Maytag could offer me regarding the matter. I asked to speak to someone of a higher authority so she said that she would transfer me to a supervisor. After several minutes of being put on hold and the representative coming back online to tell me repeatedly that she was having difficulty transferring me to a supervisor, she offered to transfer me to their Safety Division and I asked that she do so. Well, that was an exercise in futility and sarcasm. I again went through every detail of the exploding oven door event. The safety rep reminded me that my range was over 7 years old and no longer had a warranty. What the rep offered me was a part replacement, however, I would have to pay for their designated, authorized repair man’s trip fee, first for his initial visit to assess the damage, and for his second visit to replace the part as well as the cost of labor. When I told him that his offer was not acceptable, the rep repeatedly told me, “Hey, I thought I was being helpful!” I then asked him if he would listen to what I had to say, and I said that my main concern was that the exploding oven door was a major safety concern and had the potential of seriously injuring or killing someone. He interrupted me and said, “But No One did get hurt!” I further said that I wanted to know why this had happened, what would cause an oven door to explode, especially when the stove and oven were cooled and had not been used for a day (not that it should have ever happened even if they were on,) the rep did not even respond to this question. I also told him that we no longer felt it was safe to use the range and we expected Maytag to reimburse us for the purchase of a new range. I told him that this was an issue of quality and safety, not an issue of the stove’s age; this should never have happened no matter how old the stove, and 7 years is certainly not “old.” I also told the rep that I was not asking be to reimbursed for any medical expenses, nor was I asking for punitive damages, I wanted only to be reimbursed for the cost of new range. I asked if there was someone else I could appeal my request to and he said “No.” The rep then told me he would offer me this “one time only, good for only 30 days, 20% coupon” to use towards the purchase of another one of their ranges. I told him this was not acceptable and he again reminded me of how helpful he thought he was being to me. I concluded the telephone call. [REDACTED]

No one hurt Made Nov 1, 2011, sent to the company Nov 9, 2011, published by CPSC Nov 25, 2011
The product, in the report: flat top stainless free-standing range
My range had been heating only intermittently for a few weeks. I needed to use it briefly one Sunday morning, so I heated a piece of toast for my son. Afterwards I pushed the “Cancel” button to turn off the oven. Thinking the oven was off, I left my son to eat his toast and got in the shower. Before I could take a shower the oven temperature rose rapidly to the extent that the house filled with smoke and my son went to get his dad. His dad couldn’t get the oven to stop rising in temperature since the “Cancel” button was apparently not controlling the temperature rise. He had to unplug the range from the power source to get it to turn off. This was not just that the oven wouldn’t turn off, but a case in which the temperature rose sharply and continued to rise. The temperature rose so rapidly and to such and extent in just those few minutes that the iron skillets in the oven had all of the coating burned off and left in a pile of ashes on the bottom of the oven. I contacted the company to file a claim. I was asked to fill out a claim form and include the damaged items from the oven in my claim. I compiled all of the required information and sent it to the company. I received a letter from Whirlpool Corp. stating that my claim was denied because according to the users manual the oven was not to be used for storage. My response to them was to inquire about their plans for replacing or repairing the defective range. They did not respond. My last correspondence with them was on October 24, 2011 via email. My fear is that had I left the house after pressing the “Cancel” button and reasonably assuming that I had turned the oven off, the temperature may have continued to rise to the extent that a house fire would have been caused.

No one hurt Made Oct 20, 2011, sent to the company Oct 27, 2011, published by CPSC Nov 10, 2011
The product, in the report: Maytag 30” Double Wall Oven, model MEW5630DDB, serial 12069392GV, purchased 2005/06, black.
We have a Maytag double wall oven, model MEW5630DDB, that we purchased 6 years ago. I was pulling a cobbler out of the oven when the oven rack fell off the rack ledge and crashed down, spilling the cobbler all over. It happened a week before, and can happen now by just moderately pressing on the rack. The rack is still in good condition and shape. The rack from the bottom oven fits snuggly in the bottom oven, but when placed in the top oven, falls the same thing as the other rack. The rest of the oven(s) operates normally.
I contacted Maytag today, explaining the situation and they told me I had to pay for a service man to come out. When I pressed them that this was a manufacturer’s defect and a major safety issue that I could not have caused, they told me I was out of warranty and they would not do anything. I offered for them to come take measurements to problem solve their product quality but they continued on about the warranty. They asked if I was burned and when I said no (because I jumped back), they said there was nothing they would do.
Clearly, this is a major safety issue that Maytag wants to ignore. It is a certain fact that this would lead to injury. If my oven is faulty, surely many more are as well. I have children cooking in my house.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gemini Stove
We purchased our Maytag Gemini Stove in 2003. We had the same problems as the recalled product, but complained to Maytag enough that we got a new stove because we felt as thought the one we had was a “lemon” and could not bear the time it took for anymore service calls....just to have the stove malfunction and break again.
Things went okay for a little while until I used the self clean and now something important keeps breaking/melting because of the heat that is produced when both ovens are on...or the self clean...or so they say.
Currently we have lived with only being able to use the lower oven and no self clean. We can not afford another service call only for it to break again. We read the recall and also decided not to get it fixed because it sounds extremely dangerous...and we have 3 little ones. We were hoping the recall would be expanded by now. I believe our original stove would be a recall...but this one is a little newer.
The model number on the stove we have currently matches the recall...but the serial number ends in CE. So we have just missed it. But our stove is having all of the same symptoms. We are not willing to get it fixed only to potentially endanger our lives. I am writng this letter in hopes that your compiled information will lead to an expansion on the recall. This way we may be able to enjoy our product as we intended or a new one and anyone else that has the same stove will not get hurt.
