The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Superba 30 inch oven, white
Oven turned on by itself causing fire and smoke that set off the fire alarm and woke us from sleep. The fire and smoke resulted from items stored in the oven. This is the 2nd time that the oven went on by itself. The 1st time I was the only one home and was working in a nearby room when I smelled something burning. I realized the oven was on and some contents inside were melted. At that time I thought that I had accidentally turned it on even though it didn’t make sense to me at the time. This time, confirmed the oven was able to turn on by itself.

The product, in the report: Range/oven
Caller stated that the stove was a 2019 replacement by previous renter. Caller’s tenant at the rental location she owns informed her that she was preheating the oven set at 350 degrees to bake, completed her baking but then she turned it off and it would not power off. Caller instructed the tenant to turn the breaker off. Caller contacted the manufacturer who verified that the unit is not recalled but did send a technician February 22nd, 2023. The technician said the power off button was bad, they don’t have that part and that she needs to purchase a new oven. There were no injuries. Caller feels that this unit is a fire hazard and should be reported.

No incident, no one hurt Made Dec 9, 2021, sent to the company Dec 13, 2021, published by CPSC Dec 28, 2021
The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid 30 inch combo wall oven / convection microwave oven unit. Model KOCE500ESS
A brand new KitchenAid wall oven was installed in our home on January 6, 2021. This was actually the second brand new KitchenAid wall oven we have had installed in the last two years, the first one we purchased on May 20, 2020 which subsequently broke six weeks later. Regardless, this new unit was installed on January 6, 2021 and on Thanksgiving day, in the middle of cooking the turkey dinner, our oven stopped working. The unit was still receiving electricity however the heating discontinued at some point walk cooking the turkey. I contacted Plaza Appliance Mart, The store where we purchased the wall oven, and they agreed to come out and remove the wall oven and give us our money back. Plaza Appliance smart came out to our house on December 8 and, in the course of removing the wall oven, pointed out to us that an electrical fire had occurred within the wall oven junction box where the wall oven is connected to the wiring that goes into our walls. I am very concerned that a fire occurred as a result of this product and that is why I am reporting this product to you. I can send you pictures of the fire damage if you need them. Please note that I do not know what the actual manufacture date is or the UPC code because the wall oven has been removed.

The product, in the report: Stainless steel combination Kitchenaid wall oven with red circle markings on the handle and a blue inside. Note the incident occurred with the lower oven. Model KOCE500ESS05
The edge of the outside front steel panel on the oven door is exposed leaving a razor sharp edge. The edge feels like a sharp knife. My 9 month old son reached up to grab the oven door. While he did this, he sliced his fingers barely missing the tendon in his middle finger. Infant bled for over an hour. His father, who is a physician, immediately came home and provided medical care which included skin evaluation, looking for tendon damage, flushing of the area, medicine to prevent infection, and gauze bandaging. We believe this is a design flaw/defect in the manufacturing, and the product should not have been built this way.

The product, in the report: White Kitchenaid Double Oven Model Double Oven
My kitchenaid double wall oven had an open fire in the control panel compartment on 11/19/2020. It ignited the wires, the lock, the control panel, and the owners manual. I contacted kitchenaid who then attempted to blame the it on the manual being put in the wrong place in the compartment by a previous servicer. However, this unit has never been serviced.
I had a tech come out who said I was lucky my house didn’t burn down. My son lives in my house with me. This is extremely dangerous and should be investigated.
The oven burned my cabinets due to the temperature. My house nearly burned down as a result of the incident

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Double Wall Ovens Stainless Steel Model KODE500ESS04
Kitchenaid double ovens, stainless steel. I was cleaning the outside of the oven and at the bottom there is a strip of metal as part of the finishing. Above that strip is a metal lip. As I swiped my rag across the strip my thumb was sliced by the edge of the overhanging metal lip. The entire length of the lip was checked and it is razor sharp. Since this is located near the floor it could be a hazard for anyone particularly babies crawling on the floor. I was wearing rubber gloves and it sliced right through the gloves and cut my thumb below the nail. I will be sending a notice to the manufacturer as well.

The range above caught fire 8/9/2020. Dirt and grime that had accumulated in a narrow channel at the front of the cooktop where it joins the control panel heated and began melting components in the control panel display. This channel is impossible to clean without removing the control panel from the cooktop, not a part of normal maintenance. This is a fire hazard consumers should be aware of.

Hurt, no treatment Made Apr 14, 2020, sent to the company Apr 22, 2020, published by CPSC May 6, 2020
The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid KOCE500ESS - 30” Combination Wall Oven with Even-Heat™ True Convection (Lower Oven) Model KOCE500ESS
I purchased a new Kitchenaid combination microwave/convection oven in February 2020. The first time I used the upper convection/microwave oven, the handle for the lower oven reached 160 degrees and burned my hand (minor burn because I quickly removed my hand from the handle and ran it under cold water). I immediately contacted Kitchenaid and they sent out a repair technician in late February. The technician said the oven was operating as intended and that the upper oven has an exhaust fan that blows directly on the lower oven handle which is metal. He also jokingly suggested we wear an oven mitt. While the oven may be operating as intended, this is a dangerous design that creates a burn hazard for anyone who owns the oven. Further, this was a very foreseeable design flaw as it happens anytime you use the upper oven as a convection oven. I’ve contacted Kitchenaid several times to try to have them resolve this situation and have had no luck. Given the seriousness of this design flaw, I wanted to take action to prevent other consumers (especially kids) from being injured.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid 30” double oven circa 2011.
Exploding oven Recently purchased house that had been rehabbed with all Kitchenaid appliances in the kitchen. Used the self-clean function on the upper oven of the built-in Kitchenaid double oven and the glass exploded with a loud explosion all over the kitchen and interior parts of the oven. Fortunately no one was in the kitchen during the explosion but when I entered to find the source of the explosion I had received cuts and burns from the 900 degree glass sprayed all over our kitchen. Our nicely finished wood floor was burned and gouged by the burning hot glass and the oven needed complete disassembly and repair. A few days later when I ran the self-clean function on the lower oven it also exploded again spaying 900 degree glass all over our kitchen.
This is a serious safety issues as anyone in proximity to the ovens when they explode could be seriously injured. These ovens should be recalled and repaired prior to serious injury.

The product, in the report: Oven Range
The consumer indicates that the gas to the stovetop turns on very easily, sometimes by slightly touching or bumping into it. The consumer is concerned because sometimes he is not aware that the unit has turned on until he starts to smell the leak of gas.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation; the representative he spoke to advised him to buy covers for the knobs however they don’t sell them. The consumer is upset they are not assisting.
The consumer indicates his oven range was installed on 02/16/2017. The cooktop is used two to three times daily whereas the oven is approximately three to four times weekly.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid Wall Oven
Kitchenaid Wall model number KEBK276SSS00, the interior glass on my lower oven exploded and the glass shards came out of the side of the oven door. I was broiling for about 10 minutes and I heard a loud noise, when I ran to the kitchen there was glass surrounding the oven. The entire interior glass shattered.
When I called Kitchenaid they said they had no other reports on this model of this nature, which I find very hard to believe.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid black double oven
We have a Kitchenaid double oven, Model number KEBC207KBL05, serial number XT1711296, that was installed when we built our home in December 2006. The oven was set to reach 350 degrees on Saturday evening and the outside door glass suddenly exploded, sending small fragments of glass into our living room, down halls, into our appliance center, all over our kitchen at distances as far as 40 feet away. It sounded like a gunshot and to say it scared us to death is an understatement. Had my grandchildren been standing there it could have blinded them. My husband and I didn’t suffer serious injury but we too were covered in glass sustaining minor knicks and cuts. After researching this I have learned that it is more common than I knew. I have contacted Kitchenaid and have a service repairman coming out to inspect the oven on Wednesday. Whirlpool Corporation Safety Department had the nerve to say that the manual says to keep children away from appliances when I mentioned that my grandchildren could have been injured had they been here. Ridiculous.

I was using the broiler of the top oven in my KitchenAid built in double wall oven. I was toasting English muffins on a cookie sheet. After removing the muffins and closing the door I heard a strange crackling sound. I opened the oven to see what it was and a large shard of glass flew out of the oven followed by smaller splintered glass pieces. About one fourth of the door fell away leaving a large sharp piece of glass hanging crooked on the oven door. The piece of glass that shattered was the inside piece. I have had this door serviced because it would form condensation and leave water drips between the glass. It was serviced while under warranty, it is now less than 21/2 years old.

The product, in the report: Kitchen aid Double wall oven, stainless steel.
While using my kitchen aid oven on Sunday the outside oven door glass shattered and sent glass across the kitchen, hitting my son in a couple places. The oven had only been on for 20 minutes and was only at 250 degrees. 2 weeks prior, the hinges on the oven door were replaced by a service technician from Sears. This was the first time we used the oven since it was fixed. The oven is about 13 years old and we have never had a problem with this until the hinge started locking up. The inside glass did not break.
No one I know has ever had this happen to them!
We have a technician from Sears coming to the house tomorrow to check it out. Should we allow them to work on the oven again?

At 9:15 am today, after reading all the instruction in the manual, I started the quick self-clean mode on the bottom oven of my Kitchen Aid double convection ovens. These ovens are only 10 months old and were installed in our new home build. This is the first time I had used the self-clean mode. At 10:45 am, (which was an hour and half into the self-cleaning) I heard a very large pop coming from the kitchen, then the sound of glass breaking. When I got to the kitchen, there was shattered glass in front of my ovens and all over the kitchen floor. The oven itself is full of shattered glass. It had blown so hard, there was even pieces of glass in my dining room which is open to the kitchen. I immediately shut the self-clean mode off.

I have a Kitchenaid KEBS208SSS double oven. I had the lower oven in self clean mode. It had been cleaning for approximately 1 1/2 hours then I heard an explosion and glass splattering across the floor. The inside glass of the lower oven door had shattered. If anybody had been within two feet of the oven, they would have had glass shrapnel injuries.
I contacted KitchenAid and they told me it was my problem and to contact a qualified repair technician.
This was the first time I used the self clean on the lower oven since it rarely gets used.

On May 15 th, 2015 I was baking chicken in my KitchenAid oven at 350 degrees for 1 hour. This incident happened at the end of the cooking time before the food was taken out of the oven. The oven door has three layers of glass. The middle layer of glass shattered and the pieces dropped to the floor through the vents in the bottom of the door. This shattering of the middle glass caused the outer glass to shattered also but it initially remained intact much like safety glass. The inside glass closest to the food was not compromised. My son was standing next to me in front of the oven. Fortunately no one was hurt. This model is a microwave/oven/warmer combo wall unit.

RE: Kitchen Aid Architect Series II, Model KERS807SSS02, Ser. XW4704146
To whom it may concern:
I am writing you regarding a design flaw in Whirlpool’s Kitchen Aid Architect Series II, Model KERS807SSS02, which I’ve brought to the attention of [REDACTED] several times as well as Consumer Reports, The Better Business Bureau, and Consumer Complaint TV.
First let me say that it should not cost hundreds of dollars each and every time a pot overflows on a range. Kitchen Aid (Whirlpool the parent company) has a serious design flaw in the above-referenced oven model and they should step up to the plate and take responsibility. At the very least, it would demonstrate that they respect their customer base and know the value of customer service.
I purchased a Kitchen Aid (Architect Series II, Model KERS807SSS02, Ser. XW4704146) oven five years ago, which included a 5-year extended warranty. The first time I had to use my extended warranty was the first time a pot over boiled thus causing the liquid in the pot to cover the top of the range.
The controls on this model are located in the front, directly below the stove top. It seems quite obvious to me that the design should have included protection from moisture reaching the controls or a moisture barrier. It is very common for pots to over boil on a range from time to time, but this should not cause the controls to malfunction due to moisture seepage.
Again, it should not cost hundreds of dollars each time a pot overflows on a range.
Had I known that the oven model I purchased had a design flaw that allows moisture to reach the computer controls, I would have purchased the oven with the controls above the cooking surface. Kitchen Aid/Whirlpool has designed an oven which demands customers to carry extended warranties on their appliance. I’ve conducted some searches on the Internet and this seems to be true for a variety of other customer complaints with their ovens concerning the oven controls (see attachment).
I invested over $2K on this oven because having owned Kitchen Aid appliances in the past, the Kitchen Aid brand had historically proven reliable.
I’m not asking for much, just honest repair to my range OR an even exchange with a 2009 model with the controls in the rear and above the range top away from contact if moisture from an overflowed pot should reach the controls since you did not include a moisture barrier in your design.
I hope your agency can offer assistance unlike the Better Business Bureau and [REDACTED], [REDACTED] of Whirlpool.
Kind regards,
[REDACTED]

I was wiping out the upper of my double wall ovens after having run it on the self clean cycle. There is a strip of metal in the oven design that cut through the towel I was using and sliced the pad of my pinky finger almost off. I had no idea this sharp piece existed (we had the ovens installed in September 2014 and this was the first time I had to clean them). The wound required 7 stitches and I now have no feeling in the end of that finger.

Hurt, no treatment Made Feb 27, 2014, sent to the company Mar 10, 2014, published by CPSC Mar 25, 2014
The product, in the report: Built In Convection Double Oven
On Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, the glass in my built-in KitchenAid oven EXPLODED, and sent pieces of glass flying out into my kitchen. At least 8 feet away. The oven was set for broil to cook vegetables that were in a [REDACTED] cooking dish, which survived intact, but was full of broken oven glass. KitchenAid wants to “repair” the oven. The glass was pulverized into small pieces and glass dust when it exploded. This is a convection oven with a fan that circulates air through the oven. It can’t simply be repaired. There is glass dust throughout the oven and even in the double oven below. The glass dust will be blown back into the food being cooked.
They refuse to take my complaint seriously. The first customer service rep said, “Glass breaks, there nothing we can do about that.” As if this is no big deal to them and it happens all the time. Only when I asked to speak to supervisor did they even make an appearance of being half way concerned. And barely half-way. They are sending a local repairman to “investigate.” They refuse to replace the oven and say it can be repaired under the warranty.
I was in the kitchen when it exploded- it sounded like a cherry bomb. If anyone had been standing in front of the oven they would’ve been hurt. The door moved open at impact and then was jammed closed by all of the pulverized glass that jammed into the bottom.

My kitchen aid oven was on self clean mode. While I was in the bathroom I heard an explosion and something falling all over kitchen. I came out to my 2 yr old screaming and 9 month old crawling through shards of glass. I called whirlpool and the safety team wasn’t sure if I should turn oven off or leave it on. They told me they can’t have someone out until tomorrow afternoon and that I should buy a shop vac and clean it up. I told them I can’t even close the door to the oven. They told me they have no control over their contractors and maybe someone will [be] out tomorrow to order parts!! They also told me that there may have been a tiny fracture in the glass that was not visible to the naked eye that caused this!!! Where is the warning???? My kids could have been blinded by flying shards of glass that flew from my kitchen and through my dining room.

I am reporting this because it appears to be a well known problem (known by both the manufacturer and repair companies) that occurs with nearly EVERY unit. If you own this unit, it is only a matter of time before the off button stops working. I think the inability to turn your oven “off” is hazardous. The manufacturer should redesign the switch membrane so this does not happen.

We have owned a Kitchenaid stove that has required multiple repairs to the touch panel control. It is now on it’s fourth one in three years. Now the stove will not turn off. We need to shut off the circuit breaker in the garage to get the oven to stop running. Whirlpool will not cover the labor cost to have someone come out and see why the panel has failed again. I feel that a stove that has failed to function properly multiple times and now will not turn off by normal means is a fire hazard. I’m tired of sinking money into an unsafe and defective product.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid Superba Stove with Convection Oven
The backsplash of our KitchenAid Superba Stove shattered while a pot of potatoes was simmering in water on the back burner. The pot was not touching the backsplash at the time. Shards of glass covered the stovetop and reached the neighboring countertop.

The product, in the report: Kitchen aid superba built - in convection wall oven. white model number KEBS107SWH04
I purchased a Kitchen Aid Superba convection single wall oven November 2010. On January 12, 2012 I set the self-clean cycle for the first time since purchasing the oven according to the instructions in the manual. The door automatically locks when the cycle is set and after 20 minutes into the cycle there was a loud explosion, sounded like a bomb went off. I was washing dishes across from where my oven is located with my 17mth old daughter beside me. I turn around to see what happened, only to see shards of glass shooting out of the vents of the oven. I immediately took my daughter out of harms way and quickly returned to turn the oven off. There was glass everywhere in the kitchen and scattered all across the family room and the basement stairs. I was afraid to open the oven door, because soon as the door opened the glass was overwhelmingly going to pour out, and I was afraid that there would be a short circuit or even fire. I called the fire department and they came out and cut the power to the oven and cleared any risk of fire. They stated they had not seen anything like this before and recommended I contact the manufacturer. Broken glass inside the oven had embedded into the walls of the oven from the force of the explosion. I called kitchen aid the next day, Friday January 13, 2012. After speaking to the representative I was placed on hold, she returned to tell me that all Kitchen Aid/Whirlpool, could do as a courtesy is to repair my oven free parts and labor. My one year warranty just expired two months prior and I explained that this oven was defective and that was my first time using self-clean cycle. she remained firm, so I asked to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor apologized that the incident occurred and went on to say that it is the wrong doing of myself and not the oven that the glass shattered. She said “If there is a scratch on the glass it would shatter due to the high temp. of the cycle”. I told her that there were no scratches on the glass door and she went on to say that “it could have been a hairline fracture that would not have been visible to the naked eye”. THIS IS NOT A WARNING IN THE MANUAL! If Kitchen Aid is aware of a risk or that additional precautionary measure be taken, then they certainly don’t disclose that to their consumers. I explained to her that the oven is obviously defective and that should not have happened and I wanted a refund for my $2000.00 oven. She said that Kitchen Aid/whirlpool would not exchange or refund the oven, all they could do is repair it. I am afraid to use this oven again, even after repairs. I have now found numerous complaints regarding the Kitchen Aid Superba oven glass shattering and exploding while on self-clean cycle. I do not understand why this product has not been recalled, is Kitchen Aid/Whirlpool waiting for a catastrophic event before they take action?! For the amount of money spent on this oven I am outraged at the company for their defective product and POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. There is currently a class action lawsuit file in the state of New York regarding self-cleaning oven defects, so I cannot understand or accept Kitchen Aid not taking the necessary precautions and issuing a recall on defective ovens. Maybe Kitchen Aid is waiting to take action when an explosion like this happens to someone standing right by one of their ovens when it explodes. Something has to be done to protect the public from serious damage caused by one of Kitchen Aid’s ovens. I have three young children, I can only say I am thankful nobody was physically injured in my home when the incident occurred, my toddler would not stop crying after this happened and to this day I am still in shock, and i will never use self clean cycle again.

The product, in the report: Cooktop oven KERS206XSS1
Our KitchenAid cooktop oven model Model No. KERS206XSS1 was delivered and installed on 9/26/2011. Just under 2 months later on Thanksgiving 11/24/2011 the interior glass shattered. The stove and oven had been in use for 1 1/2 hours when I increased the oven temp from 375 to 400 to put the rolls in. Five minutes later, I removed the rolls to put butter on them and returned the rolls to brown more. I decided to change the oven setting from bake to broil to brown the rolls and was setting the timer when I heard a loud noise. I had thought someone had dropped something on the tile kitchen floor when my brother exclaimed that my oven door glass had shattered.
The glass remained on the door but was shattered and glass pellets as well as glass dust (pulverized glass) is all over the interior of the oven. This is a convection oven with a fan at the back and it is very likely the glass pellets and glass dust was blown into it which will result in glass in our food. KitchenAid and the appliance store have stated that the glass is all that will be replaced.

The product, in the report: Kitchen Aid Superba Wall Oven, 24”, model #KEBC147KBL05, serial #XS4009062
While baking a chicken in the wall oven, the inside glass of the double glass panel door exploded and shattered inward. The oven can still be used but the area closest to the largest hole in the glass cooks a bit quicker than the remainder of the oven. I have placed aluminum foil over the worst of the broken glass portion. Also, this explosion was not caused because the door was hit with an object as Sears was alluding to. This was not previously reported because my oven was past its initial warranty. It has not yet been repaired due to shortaqge of funds. Also, the oven was properly pre-heated before using.

The product, in the report: Kitchenaid double oven with self cleaning feature. Stainless steel
I bought a Kitchenaid double oven about 3 years ago. I had never used the self cleaning feature till last Saturday (10/15/2011). During the self cleaning the inside glass exploded with so much force that shattered glass came out of the closed oven and scattered around the oven sapce. Also the lower oven was filled with shattered glass. I have been cleaning the pieces of galss for the last two days. There are tiny pieces in every cornier and opening of the ovens. everytime I open the door more pieces fall out, in the lower oven or inside the oven. We were so lucky no one was standing infront of the oven when this happened. When I called them, they said yes, that happens sometimes.!!!!!! I think they should not make an oven with self clenaing feature and sell it for so much more money, when this could happen and injure people. They won’t take any responsibility.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid KERA807SS00 stainless steel free-standing range, installed by builder in new home in 2005
Free standing range’s oven “off” button stopped functioning, requiring that I turn oven off at circuit breaker. Model number is KitchenAid KERA807SS00.
To fix the problem required that I purchase a whole new keypad “membrane” for the oven control panel, which was additionally frustrating to have to replace the whole keypad (~$150 for the part only) for one broken button. Looking around the web to see if I could service this problem myself and how I might go about doing so, I realized that this problem, specifically with the “off” button, is quite common.

The product, in the report: KitchenAid double wall oven
Interior oven door glass shattered suddenly, spraying small hot glass chunks onto the floor, into interior of the oven, and onto the ovens below. In addition, much of the glass broke into tiny, very sharp shards (not the larger pieces expected with tempered glass).
This occurred approximately 1 hour into the self-clean cycle. The door was new, having been installed the day before by warranty service (original door had a flaw in the finish).
