The product, in the report: GE Self Cleaning Radiant Range Model JBP78

    Product: GE Self-Cleaning Radiant Range Model # JBP78 (WOB4WW) Serial # VA2 75855Q

WE have had this range for a number of years and have had not issues. Last night, however, I was using the oven and the element on the bottom of the stove caught fire. I turned the oven off, but the element continued to burn. Power continued to be fed to the element despite the oven was turned off. Luckily, I was in the kitchen at the time and my husband was able to use pliers to pull the hot element out of the stove. He then turned the power off to the stove. We have since discovered by checking on line that this is not an isolated incident. The power continues to flow through the element after the oven is turned off. If I had not been in the kitchen at the time, the element would have continued to burn and the stove could have caused an electrical fire in the house. Luckily, the only damage was the burnt out element.

The product, in the report: GE Spectra Range - black

I was making dinner in my eleven year old (purchased Feb. 2002) GE Spectra oven which was set at 350 degrees and was on for about an hour. I opened the oven door to check the roasting pan and baste the meat. As I was closing the door I heard a loud pop and hiss and a fireball appeared on the bottom element. It began to flame and throw sparks and follow the element. I closed the door and turned the oven off, but it continued. I then used the circuit breaker to sop the current, and it eventually went out. I researched this on the Internet and have found many references to this happening to others, but all said that GE did not admit to a problem. I’m afraid to have this fixed and use the oven again since this is definitely a known issue. I’m certainly happy this happened when I was there and shudder to think what would have happened if it happened an hour earlier.

The product, in the report: White GE Spectra Self-cleaning oven

The GE Spectra oven was just previously self-cleaned and then wiped down thoroughly when just a few days later the bottom heating element burst into a flame and and continued to burn despite turning off oven and throwing some baking soda on it. We ordered and installed a replacement part for this. A week later the top one did the same thing! I am trying to see if there has been any recalls on this but I can’t find any. I did read on the internet where someone had the same thing happen to them but that was in 2008.

The product, in the report: GE Spectra Range Model JBP67 WOD1WW Serial #DD269836Q

I turned my oven on 350 to preheat for baking. Within 3 minutes the lower burner was flaming - flames were 5-6 inches high. Turned off the oven. Burner kept flaming. Had to turn off the power to the range at the breaker. Burner finally burnt itself out after breaking into multiple pieces. Had I not been standing in the kitchen at the time, this event would have had disastrous consequences. There was nothing in the oven and it was clean. I have had burner elements quit working but have never had one flame the way this one did in over 45 years.

This range was purchased and installed in February of 2002. It is a GE Spectra Self-Cleaning Radiant Range, model # JBP67WOD1WW; Serial #DD269836Q. Online research shows this range has NOT been recalled by GE. Online research also shows there have been many reports of spontaneous burning of the elements in these models. I contacted GE about this rather than just replacing the burner myself due to the numerous reports about this model flaming. They waived the service call charge and sent a technician out. All he did was replace the burner to the tune of $198.26 - something I could have done for $53. There were NO diagnostics performed nor was anything else about the range checked. When I asked if he was going to check anything else, the technician’s comment was that since the burner turned on properly after he installed it, that meant there was nothing else wrong with the unit. Really? What a ridiculous statement. Do I trust this stove? No way. I will never again leave the kitchen when it is in use for any reason. It will also be replaced with another model as soon as possible - and it won’t be a GE!

This range should have been recalled when these flaming issues first came to light. At the very least, it needs to be recalled now. This model is a fire hazard and GE knows it. That is why they were so quick to respond to my complaint and so quick to waive the ‘home call charge’ and send a technician. The fact that all he did was replace the burner at a very high cost to me is a travesty. I had the option to say no when he gave me the cost - however, I thought he was going to really check the range over and make sure there were no electrical shorts or any other problem. Otherwise I would have said no thanks and gone and bought my replacement burner for $53 and installed it myself. What a waste.

Recall these range models before anyone else gets hurt or worse.
