The product, in the report: Maytag double wall oven 4 feet long by 2 feet wide. Black tempered glass on fronts of each oven. The top part spontaneously exploded.

I had used the top part of the double wall oven (preheated at 350 degrees) for 15 minutes to bake fish. I then used the low broiler setting to brown the top of the fish for about 3-5 minutes. I turned the oven off, took out the fish and had dinner. Nothing unusual had happened for about 30-40 minutes after. All of a sudden, while no one touched the oven, the tempered glass spontaneously exploded, sending bits of glass throughout the kitchen.

The product, in the report: Maytag Double Wall Oven Black

Early in the morning of October 30th at approximately 1:00 a.m., I was awakened by a loud crash in my home. I went to investigate and as I walked down the hall to my kitchen I saw glass coming from the kitchen into the hallway and I heard crunching noises that sounded like a person or animal walking around on the glass. I grabbed my dog and my cell phone and ran into my twin boys’ bedroom and dialed 911and told them what was going on. Shortly thereafter 8-10 San Diego policemen entered our home through my six year old boys’ window with their guns drawn and swept the house for a possible intruder.

What they found was that the outer glass panel on my 5-year-old Maytag oven had exploded and that the noise I heard was from the glass jumping and popping and breaking part which it continued to do for the next hour. I recorded this on video. I found that the glass had shot all over our kitchen and even found it as high as the top of the microwave which sits across the kitchen on the counter. I had not used the Maytag oven in several days and the oven had not been bumped, touched, etc. before this incident occurred.

After some internet research I learned that this has happened to many other people as well. I am filing this report because myself or my children could have been seriously hurt by the flying glass if we had been in the kitchen at the time. I am hoping that the CPSC will force Maytag’s parent company, Whirlpool (and any other companies), to issue a recall of all appliances with this dangerous glass

I filed a report with Maytag and they told me that it was just a “part failure”. I told them it was dangerous to consumers just like faulty brakes on a car and that it should be recalled but they did not care. They said that the glass was safety glass but I did hurt my foot on a piece and I am sure that if it flew into someone standing nearby, into someone’s eye, or fell onto a baby crawling under the oven someone could be seriously hurt or killed.

Please let me know what the CPSC is going to do to stop people from being hurt or killed by this exploding glass problem. I can be contacted by way of my information below and I also have many pictures and two videos of the result of the glass explosion in my home.

  4. No one hurt

The product, in the report: Maytag Gemini dual oven 4 burner range

I have a Maytag Gemini range with two ovens and 4 burners model MGR6772BDS SERIAL NUMBER 11347286CC. Yesterday, August 22 2014, the oven started clicking, the sound that the piezoelectric burner igniters make. No one was in the room and the oven had not been used in about 4 hours. As I a approached the kitchen, I saw orange flames coming up around the burner control knobs, followed by dense black smoke and the odor of burning plastic. I unplugged the over from the wall outlet. Today, after having no success on the Maytag website trying to get someone to inspect and repair the oven, I searched for recalls for this model and saw the CPSC website listing for this model and serial number and the reports of unsafe upper oven and flames. I called the 800 number and got the recall part of Maytag. I had a difficult time with them since they were not aware of all the recalls after being purchased by Whirlpool, but eventually I got someone who said they would send my information to an independent service company. I think this oven is a serious safety hazard. Even if repaired I would not trust it again, and I’m a bit concerned about the fumes that were released in the house while I went in to unplug the unit.
