No incident, no one hurt Made Aug 11, 2026, sent to the company Aug 14, 2026, published by CPSC Aug 31, 2026
The product, in the report: Viking Range Corp., Model VGIC4866GSS, Serial 110308C00073675. 48-inch freestanding natural gas range, six surface burners plus griddle. Manufactured under ANSI Z21.1a-2007.
On August 10, 2026, at approximately 7:04 PM Eastern, the oven of my Viking gas range ignited on its own with no user input.
I discovered the oven burning while no one had operated the range. The oven indicator light was OFF, but the oven gas had turned on and ignited. I was present in the room when I heard it ignite. There were no inputs to the oven prior to ignition.
I then turned the oven knob to the ON position, and the indicator light came on. After a few seconds I turned the knob to the OFF position. The oven remained lit. The control knob had no effect on the flame.
I then closed the manual gas supply valve underneath the range, which extinguished the oven. I subsequently switched off the circuit breaker serving the range. The range has remained out of service since, with both the gas supply valve closed and the breaker off.
There were no injuries and no property damage. At the time of the incident, two adults and two children - ages 4 years and 11 months - were in the home.
The failure is significant because the appliance could not be shut off through any user control. The indicator light did not reflect that the oven was running, and cycling the knob on and then off did not stop it. The only means of extinguishing a lit gas appliance was to manually close the gas supply.
Product: Viking Range Corp., Model VGIC4866GSS, Serial 110308C00073675. 48-inch freestanding natural gas range, six surface burners plus griddle. Manufactured under ANSI Z21.1a-2007.
Relationship to Recall 15-144: This model falls within the VGIC486 family covered by CPSC Recall 15-144 (May 2015), which addressed burners turning on by themselves with the control knob in the OFF position. I contacted Viking on August 11, 2026 and opened claim reference [REDACTED]. Viking confirmed the unit had never been registered and that the recall repair had never been performed on it. The unit therefore carried the recalled defect, unremediated, for the entire period I have owned it. I have been the owner of the house since June of 2021. My understanding is that the oven was installed during the initial construction of the home in 2008.
I am reporting this separately to CPSC because my failure occurred in the oven, not a surface burner. Recall 15-144 is written around surface burners. If the recall remedy does not address the oven gas valve, this failure mode may fall outside the scope of the existing remedy. The Viking representative escalated my claim to their risk management department specifically because the incident involved the oven, which suggests they also viewed it as distinct from the standard recall presentation.

No one hurt Made Mar 26, 2026, sent to the company Mar 30, 2026, published by CPSC Apr 13, 2026
The product, in the report: Viking 5 Series, 48”W. Open Burner Gas Range
We purchased a Viking 5 Series 48”W. Open Burner Gas Range (Model VGIC54828BSS) in August 2023. The range was installed in a home where we lived part-time and moved full-time in March/April 2025. We used the full-size side of the oven twice and, both times, the house filled with the smell of natural gas. We called our contractor to confirm the range had been installed properly, and he confirmed that it was. He recommended that we contact a Viking-approved repair service to investigate further.
After several failed attempts to arrange a visit, we got one on calendar. [REDACTED] from Viking contacted us in advance of the appointment, on or around January 5, 2026, and assured us that Viking would either pay half of the cost of repair or replace the unit if it could not be repaired. When the repair team arrived, they told us that the oven was extremely unsafe and that we should not use it under any circumstances. They also told us that it never should have been installed and was either flawed from the outset or damaged in transit. The repair estimate is $2,100.
I called [REDACTED] back while the repair team was in the house and told him that Viking needed to pay the full cost of repair given that the oven was so dangerous and should never have been installed in the house to begin with. He promised to review the information and return my call but did not do so. I have called and texted him dozens of times since, and the only time he answered me, he accused us of trying to get free repairs on a range that was 11 years old. This is demonstrably false, of course, which I told him. He has since not responded to any text message or call.

No one hurt Made Mar 17, 2026, sent to the company Mar 20, 2026, published by CPSC Apr 3, 2026
The product, in the report: Residential Viking gas range and oven used for cooking in a home kitchen. The unit is a full-size freestanding gas range (approximately 3048 inches wide, stainless steel finish) with multiple gas burners and a gas oven below. The appliance is connected to a residential natural gas line and is used for standard household cooking purposes. The product includes electronic ignition for burners and oven. The reported issue involves failure of the ignition system, resulting in gas release and odor during normal operation.
I purchased a Viking gas range on October 26, 2024. From initial installation, the appliance has exhibited repeated ignition failures and releases a noticeable gas odor each time a burner or the oven is started. Gas can be smelled throughout the home during normal operation.
The product is a residential gas range used for everyday cooking in a home kitchen. It has been used by adults in the household following normal operating instructions.
This condition presents a serious safety hazard due to the release of combustible gas inside the home. While no physical injuries have occurred, the situation poses a clear risk of fire, explosion, or gas exposure.
Multiple service attempts have been made, including visits by an authorized service provider assigned by the manufacturer. Repairs have not resolved the issue. The manufacturer has indicated that additional ignition system parts are on backorder for at least one month, leaving the appliance unsafe and unusable during this time.

The product, in the report: stainless Steel - 36”W Gas Cooktop 6 Burners
Small fire on cook top. Owner states the control knobs do not always have to pressed down to turn on. They can turn when cleaning the area around the control knobs with tout pushing them down. I was able to turn the knobs without pushing down one them. The safety feature does not appear to work all of the time.

The product, in the report: Viking 36” gas stove with 6 top burners.
My Viking gas oven which is only a few years old is cracking and peeling within the oven itself. The enamel in the oven is cracking and has very distinct lines on the sides and most notably on the bottom within the oven. These enamel chips go into the food that is being baked causing a serious health issue. The bottom lines have a pattern which is similar to [REDACTED] oven compliants which I found on-line. They follow the pattern of the heat shield which is on the underside of the bottom panel.

The product, in the report: Viking Range (four burners with oven) Model VGIC 3054BSS, the affected part is made by Invensys
Part of the shaft holding the oven control knob on my Viking gas range melted,, causing the knob to come off and the oven to stay on. Fortunately I was able to shut the oven with a pair of needlenose pliers. It is insanely dangerous to have an oven knob that is attached with aplastic shaft that melts. This is the second time this has happened to me with the same stove.

The product, in the report: Viking dual oven. After doing an internet search I see that the product was subject to a recall from about 2015, however no one from Viking informed me of this. I had a recall service technician come out to replace the recall part (thermostat) and it appears that the extreme heat also damaged a spark module. I reached out several times to Viking to ask if they will repair and replace the resulting damage to the spark module but they have failed to respond.
Viking oven turned on by itself (dials were off), got extremely hot (exterior knobs also got too hot too touch) and could not be turned off without shutting off gas supply to oven

My Viking rangetop griddle, VGRT3604GSS serial # 053107C00050636 turns on what I believe to be a few times per day, when the dial is in the off position, it stays on for 2 to 20 minutes and then turns itself off. No injuries, but I fear my kids will leave something plastic on the griddle and it will turn on and start a fire.

The product, in the report: Viking Gas Range with six burners Model VGIC5366BSS
While sitting in another room on a Saturday July 10, 2021 evening around 7:00pm we heard the oven sparking. We had not cooked in the oven for several days. We went to the Viking oven and made sure all burners including the oven were off. They were. We opened the oven door and the oven was warm and the smell of freshly ignited gas came from the oven. The oven continued to click from ignitor. We turned the oven knob in full circle and back to the off position, and the oven stayed on. The broiler started flaming at full temperature at this point and would not turn off. It was a VERY DANGEROUS situation. We could not turn the gas off at source and could not turn the gas off from outside meter. The electrical panel identifying stove did not turn off stove, so I turned off all electricity. This shut off the oven - after approximately 10 minutes of trying to turn it off. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WITH THE AMOUNT OF HEAT COMING OUT OF THE OVEN TO THE CABINETS NEXT TO IT.

The product, in the report: Viking 36-inch freestanding gas range. Viking brand. Model VGRC3656BDSS
VIKING Range VGRC3656BDSS, 021909C00007483.
June 21st 2020. Noticed cooking smell coming from kitchen and found oven running. Oven would not turn off, although the oven knob was in the off position, and the indicator light was off. Oven continued to run and was getting very hot. Turned off power to the range, but the oven continued running. Had to turn off gas supply to the house to get it to stop.
Once cooled, tried turning on power and gas again. With gas turned back on, strong smell of gas, and could hear it running in oven. Had to turn off gas again, then turn off shutoff value behind range.
I found information on CPSC recall 15-144 for certain viking ranges. While the description appears to be what occurred here, model number of my range was not included in the recall action. I do note that based on the serial number, my range was manufactured on Feb 19th 2009, which is within the same manufacturing dates of the recalled units.

The product, in the report: Viking Gas range Model VGIC-365-gss
I own a Viking VGIC365-gss range which developed a significant set of gas leaks, even when turned off.
All of the leaks were in a single aluminum gas line, part PB020039. which comes directly off the gas manifold, before going to the valves that are opened by the stove knobs for the oven and thus are under gas pressure any time the stove is connected to a gas line.
The line goes from the top of the range down to the bottom of the oven and is near the front corner of the range, where food can drip into the cavity that houses the aluminum line which is very close to the stainless steel surface of the range. The humidity in a kitchen and or food drippings into the cavity can aggravate galvanic corrosion or regular corrosion causing pinholes in that gas line. The aluminum line was perforated in multiple places from corrosion.
The part number has been changed to a stainless steel line, part PB020217, I am guessing I was not the only one that ran into this issue, but given that its a gas appliance with open flame a recall would seem prudent.
I did cal I did call Viking to to replace the line and report the safety issue.
I can provide the faulty part or pictures of the part directly to you. I will not be reinstalling it.....

The product, in the report: Viking Oven
My wife and I purchased a Viking oven form Gerhard’s Appliances in Doylestown, Pa. on December 1, 2018. Within two weeks the door hinges broke keeping the door from closing. I complained and insisted that Gerhard replace the oven. They refused stating that it could be fixed. A couple weeks later the door was repaired. Immediately afterwards, the flames on the stove began to act erratically, blowing sideways instead of upwards. I continued to insist that I wanted a new oven, but Gerhard’s refused again stating it was a Viking problem. Viking sent out a repair man from [REDACTED] Appliance. The repair man said nothing was wrong with the oven. I emailed videos and pictures to Viking and they acknowledged that there is a problem. They sent another repair company out, [REDACTED] Appliance, who did the repairs on the door. Again the repair man found nothing wrong. It wasn’t until we were cooking something in the oven that we noticed that when the internal fan kicked on, the flames on the stove went out leaving unlit gas to escape into the kitchen. We noticed that the higher set flames were distorted and again operating erratically. I contacted [REDACTED] Appliances and Viking and and a repairman came out on March 20, 2019. He acknowledged the problem and contacted Viking. Viking told him that they are aware of the problem, but there is no current fix. I informed Gerhard’s of this and again demanded that they take back the oven, and again they refused. Stating it is passed the return period. Today, Viking informed me that they have a fix for the problem, but it will take several weeks to get repaired. I informed Gerhard’s of this and told them if this repair does not work, I want my money back. Gerhard’s refused. Now, for the next several weeks I am using an oven that can blow up my house, but Gerhard’s and Viking don’t care.

The product, in the report: A stand alone gas range
Last Saturday, Aug 11, my wife was cleaning top surface on Viking stand alone gas ranges, model VGCC5366BSS. After she was done, she left kitchen area. Sometime later, Ive noticed a burning smell coming out of the kitchen. After inspecting the ranges, I’ve realized the oven was on, specifically the broiler heating element. The internal temperature gauge was showing a temperature above the maximum 550 F. I’ve tried to use the oven control knob to shut the oven off, but it had no effect. The igniting element was constantly producing spark, the light next to the knob was on and the oven was getting hotter. Not being able to shut down the oven, we’ve decided to cut off the gas supply line and power to the ranges. Once the gas was off, the oven broiler flames went down.

The product, in the report: Viking Gas Range 30” 5 burner with convection
My Viking Gas Range turns on by itself unattended. I found it on when I woke up in the morning. There was a pan and top that was heated inside. It continues to turn on at random times. I used to be able to move the knob to medium broil and the oven went off. Now I can’t control it and it just turns on and off without touching it. A service repair man advised that I shut the oven off at the breaker. I feel this is a safety hazard and would like a repair ASAP via a recall (or a replacement range) There was a prior recall on same issue below: “There have been 75 reports of gas ranges turning on by themselves with three reports of minor burn injuries and four reports of minor property damage resulting in one payment of $850”.

The product, in the report: Freestanding 30” Viking Gas Range
We had the authorized service company (Anova) out last night to look at our Freestanding Viking Range and the problem appears to be far worse than we had originally thought. After thorough analysis, it turns out that, since the oven was delivered, the spark wire for the oven intermittently sparks through the insulator against the oven wall rather than in the spark module. This is why the gas in the oven comes on when there is no spark. This also poses an extreme hazard as there are thousands of volts flowing through the case of the oven, with the case of the oven acting as ground. This can cause electrocution or fire and is extremely dangerous. After this finding, it was concluded that the oven cannot be used. Anova inspected everything and all connections, wires and insulators appeared fine, it was actually sparking through the big black insulator on the wire. Anova took a video and I am assuming they will send it to you, if not, we have one we can send.
Secondly, the circuit board that controls the oven is corroded. Liquid leaked from the top surface and caused the broiler to self-ignite, the cleaning cycle come on for no reason, and the burners to stop working. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, this is the exact problem the recall was supposed to fix, and it obviously didn’t.

The product, in the report: Free Standing Viking Range 30” LP Gas Range Stainless Steel Model Factory Set for Liquid Propane
I purchased a Viking Free Standing Gas Range in August 2012. The range has never really worked properly. The first maintenance on the unit was performed in October 2012 because the gas would come on in the oven without the sparker igniting, causing liquid propane to spew from the oven. The problem has recurred on and off over the last 4 years, resulting in approximately 20 service calls. The recall on the oven was performed in 2013 to prevent the oven from self-igniting. Over the last several weeks, we have had multiple services calls to deal with the oven not igniting properly resulting in the oven still not igniting properly and continuing to emit liquid propane without a spark each time the oven is turned on. Finally, on Sunday January 29, 2017, after cleaning the stove, the broiler self ignited with all knobs turned to off and we could not shut it off without turning the gas and breaker off. When we turned the breaker back on, the broiler continued to try to ignite, and then the self cleaning cycle started all with the knobs set to off. Obviously the recall repair did not solve the problem. We have been unable to have any resolution with Viking. Below is a link to a video of the incident from January 29, 2017.

The product, in the report: Viking gas range, older model Model VGRC 485-6GDSS Serial number R05019806271
My Viking range turned itself on (the oven portion). I had previously discovered the oven on when it shouldn’t have been, but on Saturday, August 27, 2016, I was sitting across from it and observed first-hand that it turned itself on with no one around. My son then told me he had heard it coming on by itself several times the previous evening (8/26). The range is a model VGRC.
I contacted Viking and was told that my range model was not recalled. However, I see that other Viking ranges have been recalled for this very same reason. The representative seemed unconcerned and only when I told her that I thought for public safety they should at least make a note of it, she took down my information.

However, when he contacted the firm, the model number of his range was outside of the ones in the recall. The consumer is waiting for a response from the firm.
The consumer was given a reference number from the firm: [REDACTED]. and he is waiting for a response from them.
The consumer is concerned that this could present a fire hazard or be related to the problem in the recall.
The consumer has not had any prior problems with the range/oven.
The consumer added:
Viking Ref No. [REDACTED}
The subject Viking Range has a failed thermostat, not the electrical issue associated with the recall, according to the service representative sent to the site by Viking Corp.
The consumer noted he was mistaken to say that the oven came on by itself, and as he understand it now, the control knob was turned to the on position and when it was turned to the off position, the oven would not turn off...The range had to be unplugged to turn the oven off.
The consumer also noted it is his understanding that parts are on order and repair shall be completed soon.

On Tuesday March 8, 2016 around 6:30AM (PST) our Viking Professional Gas Double-Wall Oven control panel burst into flame. The household electrical panel breaker had to be shut off to control the situation. The household electrical panel breaker must remain off or the unit will catch on fire again and again. Choking smoke from this electrical fire and burning filled the house. The smokey smell of the burnt wiring remains to date though the house is repeatedly being aired out. Control of the oven(s) was lost and they heated to their max until the gas was shut off. Luckily someone was at the house at the time of this occurrence or an extremely serious fire would have occurred. Luckily we were all awake at the time of the occurrence or this situation would have resulted in multiple fatalities.

Viking gas range purchased from retailer in California, March 2015 then noticed the first time she tried to use the broiler that it didn’t work. This was repaired at manufacturer expense.
On October 6th, 2015 the caller head a pop from her kitchen then saw that the tempered outer glass on the oven door had shattered and dropped to the floor.
She contacted the manufacturer again, she spoke with the technician on October 7th, 2015 and filed a report with him then asked if it was alright to us the oven with only the inner glass remaining and he replied that yes she could.
November 1st, 2015 the caller noticed that the oven was very warm, she opened the doors then saw that the broiler was on although all of the controls were off.
She tried to turn the broiler off but could not until her husband pulled the unit from the wall, disconnected the gas line then turned it back on, however when he turned it back on it created a “poof” and he noticed that there seemed to be some gas leaking.
He disconnected the range.
The service tech came to the home November 3rd, 2015 and advised the caller that the gas valve inside the oven was open.
The tech disabled the oven leaving caller with only access to the burners.
The caller states that she is waiting for the glass for her door and for repairs to the range gas valves for a range that she purchased only 8 months ago.
The manufacturer rep advised the caller that they will be discussing a refund with the decision making persons with their company.

On April 2, 2014, while pre-heating a Dangerous and Defective Wall Oven VGSO 100SS manufactured by Viking Range, LLC (“Viking”) - Serial Number 072711C00029683 the oven started leaking out uncombdusted gas. We have attempted to repair the oven to no avail. The oven cannot be used due its inablity to properly combust gas. This failure has been confirmed by the gas utility which prohibits the use and operation of the oven.
Consolidated Edison, the gas and electric utility for the City of New York, came to inspect the Wall Oven at my request after it kept setting off our carbon monoxide detectors on October 9, 2014. The Consolidated Edison inspector stated the Wall Oven was “dangerous” and demanded that the Wall Oven not be turned on because the CO level emitting from the Wall Oven was over 999 ppm which is over 10 times above safety standards and lethal. The CO levels were so high that Consolidated Edison contemplating locking our gas meter until I removed the Wall Oven and shut the gas shut off. Attached is a copy of the tag affixed to the Wall Oven by the inspector indicating test results from the CO monitoring.
We request that Viking remove the Wall Oven and either replace it or give us our money back for the cost and repair of this defective Wall Oven that has not been able to cook anything safely in since our purchase.

We recently received a recall notice for this manufacturers range, however my model & serial number were not listed. We purchased and had our range installed for $7280.98 in 2012. My wife has called Viking several times about gas leaks when the oven is set above 350F. Four times repairs have been authorized by the manufacturer and each of the four times the service man has come and said that the little leak (caused by gas being turned on and off to modulate temperature, instead of just reducing the burn rate) WOULD NOT HURT ANYONE. We have been afraid to use the self- cleaning feature and now with a newborn in the house are afraid to use the oven at all. The retailer from whom this range was purchased has been totally indifferent to the problem

The consumer reported several issues with her gas range.
1) The consumer stated that the oven door does not properly shut. The heat escapes from the edges of the door and heats up the exterior of the unit. The consumer stated that it can cause severe burns. The consumer stated that the sticker and lettering around the knobs have burned and melted off. The consumer stated that the unit smokes a lot even if there is nothing placed in the oven. The consumer believes the reason that may happen is because the oven door is not properly sealed. The consumer stopped using the oven portion of the unit.
The consumer stated that she has called the manf several time (since 2004) in regards to this issue. The consumer stated that they were unable to diagnose the cause of the issue. They informed her that they did not have any other reports on this issue.
The consumer stated that she has received minor burns on her wrist and hand from the heated exterior of the oven.
2) The consumer stated that the burners will spark to ignite but do not flame. The consumer stated that the burner can try to ignite for up to 10 minutes without having a flame. The gas escapes the whole time. The consumer stated that sometimes when trying to turn on one burner the other burner starts to click to ignite.
When the consumer called the manf in regards to this issue, they asked her to clean the burners with rubbing alcohol. They did not provide any other assistance.
3) The consumer stated that in 2003 she had a repair work done on the unit. The consumer stated that the oven stopped heating. The consumer contacted the retailer about the issue. The range was out of warranty by then. A technician came out from the retailer and replaced the computer panel/board on the range. The consumer paid over $1000 out of pocket for the repair.
The unit does not appear to be under any recalls.

The product, in the report: Viking 48” Professional Gas Range and Oven.
I am reporting an incident when my Viking 48” Professional Gas Range & Oven heated up to the point of burning my hand when I touched one of the knobs. Several months ago it would heat up so much that it shut off, and the Viking Tech repaired a seal around one of the oven doors. This time it was a certified Viking tech that responded, as they no longer send out Viking repair techs from my local Viking Range LLC office. He explained that there is a part that was NEVER installed in the unit that provided proper ventilation. In fact there was no fan or ventilation system in place to keep the heat where it was supposed to be. They have and after market part that is the 033879-000 Blower Service Kit that Viking says in an upgrade, and won’t cover it. I have already paid for the labor, among other things, and would not pay this bill. The tech and parts rep agree this should be a covered part for the unit. This is a $12,000.00 unit that is 4 1/2 years old. It should not be an upgrade to use it without burning myself by turning a knob on or off. They are aware of this problem, and should be held accountable to repair it.

The product, in the report: Viking 30 inch gas wall oven - VGSO100SS
I bought a Vilking VGSO 100 SS oven on Ebay in Nov 2013. I was not able to install it until my apartment alterations were finished in April 2014. At which point it was installed. When turned on the oven spews gas. Even after it is hot, it still spews gas. It is REALLY DANGEROUS. It makes my eyes water and I fear it will cause an explosion.
On May 2, 2014, I called Viking Range Corp., the manufacturer of the oven, and gave them the serial number. Viking told me it was refurbished “B” stock. It had previously been serviced three times for the temperature gauge in Sept 2011, ignition replacements in Nov 2011 and Bake ignition switch in Feb 2012 and finally the unit was replaced and refurbished and resold. I told Viking about the gas leak and asked whether they would fix the oven. They told me it was no longer covered by a warranty and therefor not their problem. Since May 2, 2014, I have had the oven serviced three times for an ignition and miscellaneous oven parts at a cost of $1300. The oven still does not work and continues to spew gas. I have a wife and two children in the apartment and fear for their safety whenever I turn it on. The oven is defective and dangerous.

The product, in the report: Viking Gas Oven Range Model Number: VGIC4866GSS Serial Number: 052808C0037600
We had a water boil over on the back left stove burner and this caused the left side oven to stick ON and NOT turn off regardless of the oven knob setting. The oven got over 600 degrees during this period despite being “turned off” at the knob. We had to turn off the outside gas to shut it off and even then it kept trying to relight the piezos. So we also unplugged the unit. After letting the overflowed boiled water evaporate overnight the oven seems to be working properly again. This seems like a VERY dangerous failure mode.

The product, in the report: gas range
The caller is a technician that was called over to examine an oven that the consumer was claiming to have self-start issues with.
The caller stated that he was initially notified of the problem by the consumer on 05/31/13. The unit was repaired few days later. The caller stated that he made wiring modification on the unit as per the manuafcturer’s tech support instructions.
The caller stated that the repair stopped the self-start issue until recently. The consumer contacted the caller to examine the unit
The caller contacted the manufacturer regarding the incident. The manufacturer informed him that a component had to be changed. The caller believes that the manufacturer should have informed him to change the component during the initial repair in June 2013. The caller believes that the self-start issue would not have reocurred if the component was replaced during the initial repair.
The caller stated that on 02/12/14 he repaired the unit again to replace the component as per manufacturer’s instructions. The caller stated that he has retained the component that has been replaced.
The caller stated that the manufacturer has not asked to take back the replaced component for any kind of investigation or examination.
The caller stated that he believes that the self-start issue is resolved now.

The product, in the report: Viking D3 Freestanding 30” Gas Self-Clean Sealed Burner Range
We purchased a Viking D3 Freestanding 30” Gas Self-Clean Sealed Burner Range from Grand Appliance in Madison, Wisconsin on March 16, 2013. The installation date was April 12, 2013. The item number is RDSCG2305BSS, the model number is RDSCG2305BSS and the serial number is 030713C10083927.
On several occasions the knobs to the gas range and oven have been accidentally bumped into the ‘on’ position. Many times this was not noticed until the entire kitchen was filled with gas. The owner’s manual describes the knobs as being “child proof.” They are not even “bump proof.” Because this is a safety issue, we contacted Viking about the issue. They sent a repair technician, who was unable to remedy the situation.
This is an expensive range which poses a serious danger to our family. We feel this issue is a flaw in the design and construction of this Viking range model, and are continue to seek a solution to the problem.

On 06/29/2013 we discovered that our Viking gas range had turned on the oven by itself. We had not used the oven for several days prior. The range surface was so hot to the touch my wife burned her hand. Luckily we were home when this happened. Had we been away I suspect that our house could have burned to the ground.

The product, in the report: Viking D3 30” 5-burner cooktop. Stainless Steel with cast iron grates. On the Viking website it is listed as: 30” Gas Cooktop - RDGSU
Product is: Viking D3 30” 5 burner gas cooktop.
Burned my fingers because when stove is in use, especially when using the front burners, the knobs that control the flame for cooking get so hot that they are untouchable. Fortunately the burns on my fingers weren’t as bad as it could have been had I not realized and actually used the knob.
The knobs stay hot for a quite awhile once it has been turned off (which in all honesty is quite a feat to do because it is so hot).

The product, in the report: Viking 30” Gas Range
We are writing to you regarding the Viking 30” Gas Range that we purchased last year. As a result of numerous problems with the range, it is clear to us that this range is defective. We are requesting a refund or store credit. The range was purchased from Warehouse Discount Center in Torrance, CA on 3/10/12. We paid $3,413.62 (including tax). Our sales associate promised delivery quickly, but there were many delays and we did not receive the range until late March. Already frustrated with the late delivery, the range was poorly delivered on the back of a small pick-up truck by one older man. He had no one else to assist him to bring in the range into our house. We were surprised to see the lack of care and caution used in delivering a high-end and very heavy kitchen appliance. Right away, we had issues with our range. Our first service call happened in early April, 2012. The oven was not heating up properly. Whatever we were baking or roasting was not cooking properly. The oven would start to heat up, but then the finished product was still raw and uncooked. The thermostat was adjusted and it appeared to be working well again, but as we discovered later, it was never repaired properly that time. The second service call was much more serious. In late April the oven started going on by itself! One day, we finished dinner, cleaned up and were in the living room when we heard the clicking sound of the oven being ignited. No one was in the kitchen and no one turned it on. The oven dial was off, but the oven was clearly heating up, quickly and quite hot. We could not turn it off by turning the dial, so we were forced to unplug it from the back. At that point the oven was extremely hot and it was a dangerous act to try to move a heavy and hot range to unplug it. We called Warehouse Discount Center right away, to ask for help and express our concerns. We spoke to the manager at that point, but he said that all he could do was order service for us. When the serviceman came out, no problems were discovered. We were outraged when we plugged our range back in to make dinner and the turning on of the oven by itself happened once again. Luckily, we were home and we heard the clicking sound once again. When I opened the oven door to check the temperature, large blue flames shot out of the oven towards us. It was very scary! My husband was not home, so my 14 year old son and I had to move the extremely hot oven out from the wall once again to unplug the range. It was again a dangerous thing to do. Once again, I called Warehouse Discount Appliance and Viking for repair on this issue and a new Thermostat Kit and DSI Module were replaced on the Viking range. Although this issue occurred twice and has been repaired, we are still fearful that it may reoccur. This could be extremely unsafe if it happens when no one is home, or even worse if one of our older children are home alone. We are confident this is something your company would not want to be responsible for. The third service call was requested in July of 2012 for the range not cooking properly again. This time, the repairman said it was due to lack of preheating and called it an “education” service call. We feel strongly, especially with my husband being a private chef, that we know how to operate our range and it wasn’t a preheating issue, but the uneven and incorrect cooking arising again. Our fourth service call in January of 2013 was requested because the range was not cooking properly just as we foresaw. We had preheated the oven, set a chicken in to roast, came back after an hour of roasting and the chicken was still raw in a luke warm oven. We could reach in and place our hands on the metal grates inside the oven and not burn ourselves. Although the dial read 350 degrees, it probably was only about 100 degrees. We were so infuriated by having our range out of service once again. Dinner could not be finished and take-out had to be ordered again. Once again, I called Warehouse Discount Appliance and spoke to a salesman at the store. He knew, by voice, who we were and remembered all of our numerous problems with our Viking range. We told him of our current problem and he said again that he was sorry, but that service would have to be called out on the issue. He continued to tell me that he uses our story, of our Viking range going on by itself, to encourage his customers NOT to buy Viking ranges. Instead, he guides his customers to other ranges with better reviews. It is insulting to know that the store we assuredly purchased a very expensive range from, is now using our story to sway their customers to purchase other “better” ranges, while we still have our defective range sitting in our kitchen. I followed up with a phone call to the store manager, to express our concerns over our range and our disgust that our personal story is being used to sway consumers away from Viking ranges. We asked for our range to be returned and to receive store credit to purchase another range. He had to check with upper management and he would get back to me in a few days since it was the start of the holiday weekend. When he did, he said no, he was sorry but we could not return it for store credit. We want a reliable appliance in our home, especially since we paid a large amount of money thinking we were getting one of the best professional grade appliances.
In February 2013, the entire electrical panel of the wall where the Viking range is plugged into shorted out and the electrical plugs had to be replaced. This electrical problem did not occur anywhere in the house, only to the wall where the range is plugged into. Again, this range remains defective in more and more ways. Being so outraged over the numerous problems on a major appliance that costs over $3000.00, we called the Southern California Viking Distributer and spoke with you. As you know, we expressed our concerns that this product is a “lemon” and needs to be replaced. You stated that if we wanted the range returned, we would have to contact the national Viking product center in Mississippi. We called that location and spoke on January 15, 2013. She listened thoughtfully to our concerns and expressed sympathy to our issues, but she did say that a return would have to be authorized by you. We found this confusing because you had stated that you could not authorize a return, but that only the Mississippi office could. After receiving these conflicted messages, our frustrations with our Viking range grew. We are now formally asking for our defective range to be returned to Warehouse Discount Appliance and we request store credit or refund in the amount of $3,413.62. We ask this of both Viking and Warehouse Discount Appliance. We look forward to a response from both parties in order to receive the fair resolution we are seeking. If we do not receive a response from you by March 15, 2013, indicating your agreement to make us whole, our only available course of action will be legal action. Thank you for listening to our requests and concerns.

The product, in the report: Viking 30” black cook top with 4 burners- gas
We own a Viking 30” black cook top. The largest and most powerful burner is located in the front, near the on/off knobs. When a large (12 “) frying pan is used on the front burner, the associated knob becomes so burning hot that the inside expands, does grip the metal core and the burner cannot be turned off. It is necessary to lift off the knob with a pot holder and turn off the gas flame with a plier. While this should have been reported earlier, my busy schedule prompted me to simply deal with a ridiculous situation in the above manner. Recently, a guest in my home tried to help me as I heated up an appetizer and burned his fingers on the knob.
We have reported this to Viking Co. They sent out a technician who was horrified to see that the finish on the stove near the front burner had melted. He took pictures and wrote a report. Viking took months to research this issue and just told us based on their research they will not replace the range top. No explanation was forthcoming.

It was a Viking gas range and the oven turned ignited by itself at about 10:30 in the evening. It almost set the apartment on fire and required the gas to be shut off. We had to call maintenance to remove the stove in order to shut off the gas.

Manufacturer: Viking Range Corp Model: VGRT360-4GSS Range Top (installed 2001) Problem: Gas leak from left front burner and cannot shut it off. Sudden burst of flame at that burner when using other burners normally. Turning the left front knob control does not alter the flow of gas from the burner. Short-term emergency remedy: Shut off gas valve to entire range top making it unusable.
Appliance repairman solution after inspecting appliance: Buy gas valve bolt kit and replace defective part. Part # 003519-000.
Viking Range Corp response: Viking Range Corp no longer makes that part. There is no replacement part that the consumer can purchase from Viking Range Corp.
Called numerous appliance part and repair companies: Viking Range Corp no longer makes that part and they do not offer any substitute part.
Can a gas cooktop manufacturer abandon their product support like this!?? I’m sure I’m not the only customer who needs a replacement gas valve bolt kit for this product !!

No one hurt Made Jun 2, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 27, 2011
The product, in the report: gas range
This is a copy of the form I filled out on the company web site. The explosion with flames shooting out of the oven door is the safety issue I’m reporting. Viking Range Correspondence 6/2/11 I purchased the range in late December 2010. On Easter Sunday after having used the oven less than 10 times, while I was baking a ham for our 12 guests, there was an explosion from the oven and flames blew out of the sides of the oven door. After that the oven would not ignite. The explosion alarmed every one present including an investigative reporter for a large CA newspaper. The igniter was replaced a few weeks later after 2 trips to the house (about 300 miles requiring two days of my time). While servicing the oven the technician noted that the welds that held a metal plate on the bottom of the oven bottom were not attached. Assuming your quality control would not permit a range to leave the factory in this condition one must assume that the explosion was strong enough to break the welds. After using the oven 2 more times since the repair, again with a house full of guests, the oven quit working, thankfully without the explosion. Several days ago I contacted the retailer where I purchased the stove and asked him to have a customer service rep call me. So far no call though he reports that he made the contact the day I called him. The performance of this appliance is dangerous and unacceptable. I would like a full remedy in an expedient fashion. Please contact me via email at your earliest convenience to establish a telephone appointment to discuss this important issue. Thank you for your consideration. [REDACTED]
