I purchased a new Kenmore Gas stove 1-1/2 years ago directly from a Sears store in Novi, Michigan. In the time I have owned and used this product, I have had several incidents of the burner knobs being accidentally slightly turned on omitting gas into my home. One such time I had left the house for much of the day and upon return, my house was filled with gas fumes. I have owned many gas stoves in my lifetime and have never seen this issue. The knob on a gas stove typically need to be pressed in before turning which has always been an efficient safety mechanism, however, the knobs on this particular model are too easily able to turn on. I am a single person living alone and am fearful that one night, I may not wake up because of the gas. I am fearful, not only for myself, but for other families that may have purchased this same model. If there are options such as new knobs that can be replaced, I would be glad to pay for them and use them. At this time, with many repeated events, I am ready to purchase a new stove...and would feel very guilty to sell this used to someone else. I feel I have been betrayed as a long time consumer of Kenmore products which I have never had an issue with in the past and a valued product name for myself and my extended family.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite series purchased Jan 2017
We were cooking breakfast and just finished and went to turn off left burner but burner dial would not turn off just kept turning it stayed on low flame when we heard a hissing noise. We went back to stove to try and shut gas off but could not. Decided then to turn off propane behind the stove. Upon trying to remove the stove all five burners ignited and also a large burst of gas came out of oven. Then had to turn off propane tank outside and used two bursts of our fire extinguisher to put out the fire on the kitchen stove. It look like the switch broke inside dial and could not shut the gas off and gas went into all burners and oven and the igniter kept clicking to light the burners.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Gas Range, Model 79074032312
Purchased a Kenmore gas range from Sears in Jun 2017. A few months after we noticed there was a smell of gas (propane) in the house. Noticed that a few of the stove valves were in the on position. The valves are very sensitive to engage (push in) and turn. Too sensitive. It takes about a 1/16” to engage the valve then turn it. Apparently when we reach above the stove to use the microwave or get cereal in the upper cabinet the mere brushing of the valve turns the valves and expels gas into the house. Reported it to Sears and two service men said that is the way the valves were designed so live with it. There is no repair and Sears won’t take the stove back. We have even went to the store manager and contacted Sears online Customer Solutions to no satisfaction. This is to the point where the second service man said as he was leaving the house “be careful with that stove”. The stove Model is 79074032312. We had intended on turning this stove in an purchasing another Sears product with a stiffer valve design. Can you help us?

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite (made by Frigidaire?) 36” Gas Oven/ Range - Model # 790.75403501, Serial # NF30726088
The side walls of the oven have warped out under normal use and the racks fall with any weight applied on them when installed in any of the slots other than the top. Scalding hot liquid or metal pots and baking sheets bounce/ splash who knows where. Burnt my hand on a pot that lurched forward onto the opened oven door. It’s happened to multiple ovens and I’m not sure why the model hasn’t been recalled. Here’s a laundry list of others who have had the same problem. https://community.sears.com/Discussions/Single_question_detail/All/Allquestions/The-oven-racks-in-Kenmore-Elite-(Model-79031043302)-Fall-Down-and-have-caused-burns . Sears charges a fee to have it examined/ replace, which is bullshit when their product is flawed and highly dangerous. The form below asks for a date but it’s continuous because any time I bake anything I’m at risk. How has this not been recalled?!

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Double Oven Gas Range (Stainless Steel, 30” width)
Our Sears Kenmore Elite Double Oven gas range (Model# 790.78923002) caught on fire 2 times within the last year. The first was on December 24th, 2014 and the second time occured on August 18, 2015.
On December 24, 2014 I was baking a pumpkin pie in the bottom oven. I turned on the top oven to preheat and within minutes he smoke detector went off (I was not near the oven at the time). I ran downstairs and I saw OVEN FLAMES coming out of the top vent of the stove. I immediately shut off both ovens. Luckily we caught in nick of time or our house could have burned down. A Sears technician came and replace a valve and ignitor.
On 8-18-15 we had a SECOND FIRE with the same stove. I was cooking wings in the top oven and smelled burning plastic. When I opened the top oven door a giant flame cam shooting out of the oven. I turned both ovens off ASAP. We are no longer using the oven and will contact Sears for a refund on the stove and prior repair cost.

I am writing about the fact that my stove has the potential to cause a gas leak in my home. It has done so, but we caught it and were able to stop the problem.
The stove in campaign 15-143 is the same product as mentioned in this recall, but my model is not on the recall list. My stove has exhibited the EXACT hazard that is documented in this recall 15-143.
My model is a slight difference in that it has 4 burners and not 5 burners. Same systems and internals though. Model 36603

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Elite Gas Range Model 790-7754-3800 Serial #VF83427981
I am writing to make you aware of exploding oven glass doors. I had this to happen to me when I was out shopping on Wednesday, 6/24/15. The oven was not on nor was it plugged into the power source. Glass was on the floor - spread a couple of feet away from the stove. I own a Sears Elite Gas Range - model 790-7754-3800, purchased in October 2010.
I goggled this problem and found there are many such cases documented online. I HAVE SEEN NO WARNING ABOUT THIS. There is no warning in the manual Also it was not only Sears mentioned but [REDACTED].
Today, Friday, 6/26/15. I called the Sears Headquarters in Hoffman Estates to see what they had to say about this incident. I spoke with [REDACTED] in Customer Solutions at approximately 4:15 p.m. After explaining my problem, [REDACTED] put me on hold for about 5 minutes. He came back to tell me there were neither government nor Sears recalls on this product. I told [REDACTED] that, from the number of times Sears was mentioned in the incidents cited online, Sears had to know something about their exploding oven glass doors. Suddenly, I was disconnected from [REDACTED].
I called back and was connected to [REDACTED] who, after hearing my story said, if I wanted a complete new door that would eliminate this problem, he would give me the number for the manufacturer who might give me a replacement for free. I asked what would I do with a new door. He said Sears could install it, but I would have to pay for their service if I didn’t have their warranty. I was more than disappointed by Sears since I have been a loyal customer for many years.
While we were not home when the glass exploded from our oven, there are many stories online when people were home and some injured. Our damage was lessened only because I hang decorative towels on the bar handle of my oven and it diffused the explosive spread from doing damage to other appliances.

The product, in the report: Gas range/oven. Kenmore Elite stainless steel gas range/oven.
Three racks in Kenmore Elite gas oven/range no longer fit on “tracks” inside oven. If you can get the racks stable enough to put items into oven, racks randomly fall, spilling food and causing burns. Recently finding an on-line forum through Sears community, this appears to be an issue for many people owning several different model numbers.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Gas Range
Sears Kenmore gas range model number 79077483804. Today I was starting to use this gas oven. The oven was cold and looked perfectly fine, I set the oven temperature to a low temperature of 220 degrees Fahrenheit then immediately opened the oven door, the oven was not warm yet as I had just started it. As I pulled the door open in the normal way the outer door glass shattered into pieces. I did not touch the glass at all, I simply pulled the handle to open the door and the glass shattered. Again, nothing touched or struck the glass. The two layers of inner oven glass is intact, only the outer glass panel broke. Again, the oven had just been turned on to a low temperature setting and was not at all warm yet. There were glass pieces as far as five feet from the oven, there were no injuries. This gas range has been in service since July of 2009 and until now (10/23/14) has worked perfectly. I have a photograph of the incident.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore model #7540 36” 5 burner gas range
I am writing because I do not know who else to contact or what else to do about a problem with my gas range. I purchased it from Sears in 2009 and had it professionally installed by our propane company. The range itself has worked fine since then, however, after the first time I cleaned the self cleaning oven, the racks no longer fit into the oven (too narrow). When anything is placed on the racks, they fall down to the bottom of the oven floor. I really dont think that the racks “shrunk” at all, but what I do believe is that the oven was so hot during cleaning that the walls have bowed out making the racks appear too small for the rails they are supposed to sit on. Since then I have been “balancing” the racks with tin foil wrapped around the edges. This is clearly not acceptable and very clearly dangerous. Many times, the rack AND pot of food has collapsed to the bottom of the oven. Both myself and my husband have been burned by hot food. I went into the store (Enfield) where I purchased the range and they told me to call customer service. First they said they would send someone out (at my expense). Then they said they did not have any other complaints (which is untrue, just by checking the internet) and lastly they refused to do anything and I can not reach anyone higher up at Sears to discuss this problem with them. They are saying I should have purchased the extra “insurance” for the appliance. I am sure they will not do anything else for me and that it why I am contacting you. If nothing else it should be reported that this range/oven is hazardous to a consumer. Very Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite gas Range Model # 79079363405
I came home 2 days ago to find an explosion had occured in my kitchen involving my glass oven door. Sears Kenmore Elite model # 79079363405. I was stunned as to what had occurred. Had my home been broken into and vandalized? Was the person still in my home? After surveying the home I found that no other damage or loss had occurred and that my oven door had just exploded for no reason. It was not being used and no one was home, thankfully. There was 100’s of pieces of glass up to 6 feet from the oven itself. The potential for bodily harm to ourselves or animals could have been devastating! I decided to Google: Oven door unexpectedly explodes. Pages upon pages of Sears Kenmore Elite complaints and news reports came up. All describing the same. None did Sears acknowledge or compensate. We also made many frustrating calls to Sears who all denied knowledge and no offer to compensate. My son has a freind who agreed to have someone from “ Blue Ribbon” (?) call us the next day. They did. Denied Knowledge. Offered $100 credit towards purchase of another Sears appliance. Given case # and ph # to call. Tried to do that. # calls later and many transfers no one could help us with that $100 credit. We were told it was an invalid case # so after all was said and done we got nothing.

The product, in the report: Kenmore gas range and oven. Range has a large, middle, fifth burner.
The knob has been turned between the “off” and the “light” most likely by someone brushing against it. As a result, the propane has been mistakenly turned on, sometimes for hours. No injuries. Possibly the cause of headaches, and definitely scary.

Hurt, no treatment Made Feb 9, 2013, sent to the company Feb 19, 2013, published by CPSC Mar 5, 2013
The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite 30” Gas range. Model #790-7754
Sears Kenmore Elite gas range purchased in 2009 has control knobs positioned so close to oven ventilation on front, that when oven is used for less than one half hour, they got too hot to touch. This Thanksgiving we had an incident in which a grandchild burned himself ( no treatment necessary) after touching a knob. His father tried to touch the knob, and it was too hot to touch. When the oven is on for an extended cooking period, the stove knobs can only be touched by using oven gloves/pads.
Two service technicians checked the stove, and both agreed, and documented that there appears to be a design flaw. The stove was working properly. New knobs were ordered, but same results.
Sears has authorized replacement of range with a dollar amount allowance.

The product, in the report: Sears Kenmore Gas Range Model No. 790-78852602
Our Sears Kenmore Gas Range Model No. 790.78852602 has a handle that repeatedly comes loose from the screws it’s held on with and causing the handle to come off when opening the hot oven or closing it after putting items in/out of the oven. The handle comes off of the hot door separating and causing you to burn yourself from the door closing on your arms. This has happended on multiple occasions and takes two people to handle the door when it happens.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
Caller purchased gas range around May of 2011 and had no problems with it until the first week of June 2012 when she was baking, her one yr old son went to the oven, placed his left hand on the oven door and began screaming as if he were in pain. She grabbed him then examined his hand thoroughly.
He was not burned however the temperature of the outside of the door was so high that she contacted the retailer who sent someone out and measure the heat which read 137 degrees using a non contact infra red thermometer.
Caller believes that this is way too hot and could ultimately burn a child badly,
She would like for her door/to be investigated and replaced with another of a different model and serial number.
Caller appreciates the help.

The product, in the report: L.P. Gas counter top range
The stainless steel knobs that control the burner are located on the right side of the range and the consumer feels that if they are accidently bumped they could possibly turned on the valve for the gas to be released. There is also a delayed with the ignition as well which comes on well after gas is released. The consumer has not contacted the firm with his concerns but plans to do so. Consumer Added: This happens all the time. Accidental gas release before ignition knobs turn on while cleaning stove, etc. and can fill kitchen with gas if not noticed.
No further information was provided.

The product, in the report: Kenmore Elite Gas Range Slide-In Model
Purchased my Kenmore Range, model # 790.31033801 from Sears in the spring of 2009. There was a known controller panel problem at that time which was fixed promptly by Sears. But, about 9 months later after using the oven, I noticed the shelving no longer seemed to fit as snuggly as it should. I basically needed to balance the shelves exactly on the outside ridges to keep the shelves from falling down in the stove. I did order a replacement shelf hoping that would fix the problem, but the new shelf fell through as well. I have now reached the point where I cannot set anything heavy on the shelves in the oven or they will just collapse. This has basically made my oven useless to me. To the naked eye, you can see where it appears the oven has expanded.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
When any of the burners are powered in the on position regardless of the setting the paint on the burner (grate) starts to bubble then she notices a flame. When the range is powered in the off position the flame slowly goes out.
The failure has occurred with each of the four burners since she first purchased the range in 2009. She has never contacted the firm in the past when the failure would occur. However, the firm was contacted on 7/25/2011 and she was advised by the representative (name is unknown) that the firm has never received any reports on the matter and that the range was not subject to any recent recalls.
The consumer was advised that she could purchase replacement parts for the range. She indicated that she was kind of leery about purchasing any replacement parts in fear that the same failure would occur.
No repairs have been made and the consumer still currently uses the range with caution. She estimates that the failure has occurred atleast six times.

Hurt, care not known Made Jul 21, 2011, sent to the company Jul 12, 2013, published by CPSC Jul 26, 2013
The product, in the report: Gas range
While baking a pizza in the oven at 425 degrees for approximately 20 minutes she attempted to open the oven door when the handle to the oven detached from causing the oven door to slam close.
She was able to get the oven open by using a oven mitt to grab at the screw that was left exposed since the handle fell off. She received a minor burn to her right hand when the oven closed, when trying to get the pizza out while keeping the door open.
The firm was contacted on 7/21/2011 and she was advised that there were no recalls involving her model number and serial. She was advised to schedule a repair. She indicated that she would hire another company not associated with the firm to make the repairs. She ended up ordering a new handle and replacing it herself- new hande looks the same.
The consumer indicated that she had experienced other failures with the handle about the handle was loose on the left side and her husband attempted to tighten it each time. There were other occasions when the handle fell off on one side and her husband was able to make the repairs to put it back on the range.
No repairs have been made as of yet. However, she indicates that she has teenagers that use the oven quite frequently and what if they were to experience the same failure. She also indicated that they could be severely burnt.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
Sears Oven/When you pull rack from oven out, the rack falls.
Gas range was purchased March 2008 & no problems were had with it until Thanksgiving 2010. Callers were pulling 12 lb turkey out of oven when the rack dropped. Caller’s contributed this first incident with possible user error and not to any range issues. Believes that they may have cleaned the oven using self cleaning mode before Thanksgiving but isn’t positive. Caller was able to save turkey. SinceThanksgiving they have noticed that if they use the self cleaning mode then afterward the racks drop out when user is attempting to retrieve food. The most recent incident this caller has had was 04/24/2011 when he was baking scalloped potatoes and ham, pulled rack out to retrieve food and rack dropped. Although caller was able to save meals with all incidents he is aware that he or his wife could have been scalded. This last time the caller inspected the oven and noted that if he pushed the rack to one side it would just fall out posing a severe burn hazard if not caught. Oven has three racks, they have been using only two so he grabbed the rack that they have NOT been using to see if the racks themselves were adjusting in size but the 3rd rack also fell. Caller would like this gas range inspected and recalled before there is a senseless and possibly severe burn hazard to one or more consumers. He would like his range replaced by manufacturer at manufacturer expense. Caller has investigated online and states there appears to be an ongoing problem.
