No incident, no one hurt Made Oct 7, 2026, sent to the company Oct 13, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 27, 2026
The product, in the report: 30-inch Stainless Steel Front-Control Slide-In Gas Range. The appliance features a 5-burner gas cooktop with heavy-duty cast-iron grates and a front control panel with metal control knobs.
During our family’s normal use of a Maytag gas slide-in range (purchased approximately two years ago), a surface burner gas control knob bound up and stuck while in use. When attempting to turn the burner off, the internal valve mechanism failed to return to the fully closed “OFF” position. As a result, the burner flame went out, but gas continued to leak into the living space through the unsealed valve stem, creating an immediate fire, explosion, and inhalation hazard.
To mitigate the immediate danger, we pulled the range from the wall and shut off the main gas supply to the appliance, manually. This is now the *second* occurrence of an internal gas valve stem binding and failing to shut off on this specific unit within a seven-month period. A different burner valve failed in the exact same manner in March 2026, requiring a valve replacement.
This recurring pattern indicates to us a systematic safety defect in the gas valve stem design or internal manifold assembly, where thermal expansion or mechanical binding prevents the valve from closing completely, causing unmonitored gas leaks in residential kitchens. And when we contacted Maytag’s safety team, they offered merely to coordinate a “courtesy” diagnostic and insisted that our family would need to pay for the labor and broken parts because the items were outside the default warranty.

The product, in the report: Maytag MGR6875ADW 30” Freestanding Gas Double Oven Range
Turned on stove the other day and it smelled like gas, reported it to the landlord. The stove was looked at by a repair person and no issues found. The unit was tested and no leaks found. The occupant went to use the unit and as soon as the unit was turned on the top oven burst into flames. The occupant could not turn off the unit because of the flames, once fire arrived on scene a [REDACTED] Fire Extinguisher was used to put out flames. The gas was then shut off at the outside meter.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gas range/stove with 5 burners, model #MFGS4030RS. I was informed that this stove has “easy ignite”. Well it ignites with the slightest bump to the outstanding knobs. It is extremely dangerous and I have requested an exchange but Home Depot would not honor an exchange after 48 hours.
I purchased a Maytag gas stove Model #MFGS4030RS from Home Depot. At the store, you cannot tell how extremely sensitive the knobs are with regard to safety. The stove was installed on July 7, 2025 and it is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS. Every time I reach to wipe it down, the burners ignite. It is a hazard with the flames coming close to my clothing, my hair and the dishrag I am using to clean. This stove needs to be recalled. It is a catastrophe waiting to happen. There are no options for a safer knob and I am past my return date to exchange this stove. Please look into this BEFORE something happens. Let’s be proactive and not reactive.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gas Range
I purchased a Maytag gas range from Menards. The stove top has knobs on the front of the unit. The knob has about 1 inch space when you turn it on before it gets to the lite area. In this space before lite, the unit leaks gas. I accidentally turned the knob on while cleaning, went outside, and returned to a home full of leaked gas. I am concerned about safety. Maytag says this is the design, not a flaw, and refuses to replace the unit. Menards states its too late to return and I have had it less than a month.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gemini - 30” double gas oven model MGR6875ADS
I have a Maytag Gemini double gas 30” oven... about 2 months ago, it started turning on by itself and heating up to 350 or 375... out of the blue it will just automatically turn on at any time. I am the only owner as I bought it new from LOWES. After I figured out what was happening, I tried to do a reset where you unplug it for about 10 minutes and plug it back in, but it started doing it again about 3 days later. I don’t use is a lot, but it shouldn’t do it at all. I’m told it’s a problem with the control board, keypad, but it looks very clean inside and no burns. I cannot use my oven now for anything because I had to turn off the gas to it. I have also tried to leave it unplugged for a long period of time and then plugging it back in with the gas off, but it still tries to turn itself on. This seems to be a huge potential for a fire to happen and it should be recalled in my opinion model.. MGR6875ADS

The product, in the report: Natural Gas Stove
I’m assisting an elderly friend with problems with her Maytag gas stove. She purchased it approx. 1.5 years ago. The issue is that if you’re not careful and ensure that the individual control knob is on zero, the flame is shut down, but it still releases a substantial amount of gas. Fortunately, I was there the last time this happened, and I could prevent a possible explosion. This is life threatening situation was immediately reported to Maytag via life chat. The result was zero! It was reported several times and the request for repairs - nobody cares. The phone number provided by Maytag/Whirlpool: 866 550 5136 is not being answered, and messages are ignored. The reference # is [REDACTED], that’s all we have. Well - I can call the utility company, and they will shut down the gas supply to the residential. As you can see, this would result in extreme hardship to an elderly person, especially during these freezing weather conditions. A shut down would affect the heating system, the hot water heater and the cooking appliance. My friend has a problem with smelling, after she was affected by Covid. In my opinion, this situation is just waiting to “explode”. I ask for your help, since the health and safety is in danger, because of a faulty appliance, and the non responding the manufacturer Maytag/Whirlpool. The model # of the gas stove is MGS 8800F21, Serial # RX 4811871.

Jenn-Air Gas Cooktop Model JGD3430BS00 exploded without warning. I was putting a pot of water to boil on the Gas Cooktop bottom left burner and when I turned the knob, it exploded. Every knob hit me and the ceiling has dents into it - it blasted flames, threw the pot and all the cast iron pieces across the kitchen. The entire metal cooktop up is bent on both sides upward. I was hit in the head with something and have a contusion, I was hit in the mouth/nose teeth with something that bruised, and my sweet cat who was on the counter has his head fur & whiskers burned. I am shocked and terrified and don’t want this to happen to anyone else.

The product, in the report: Gas Cooking Range
We own a Matag gas range we purchased in February, 2019. This range has 5 control knobs across the top front portion of the range that turns on the gas & starts the burners. Over this period we accidentally brushed the knobs which turned on the gas without knowingly doing so. There is a grey area between the knob off position & when the burner is ignited. When the knob rotation reaches the the ignition point the range will emit a clicking sound & the burner will ignite. This grey area is approximately about 45 degrees of rotation. If you accidentally strike the knob at a 45 degree downward angle & at the same rotation that the knob rotates it turns the gas on. If the knob stops in the grey area (described above) it will emit gas and the burner will not ignite nor will the range emit a clicking sound. When this happens the gas is emitted into the room making a very serious situation especially if you happen to leave the room. The safety device on the knobs requires the operator to press down & rotate the knob at the same time. The problem is that the downward spring tension on the knob is insufficient so the accidental 45degree motion will override the spring tension on the knob allowing the knob to stop in the grey area allowing gas to emit into the room. This is a very serious problem which could allow an explosion or carbon monoxide poison.

The product, in the report: Maytag MGT8885XS04 - SN: D41411071 Stainless Steel
9/4/21 I was boiling a pot of water on my Maytag Gas Stove (MGT8885XS04 D41411071), pushed the pot to the back of the stove to utilize the burner for something else and the steam from that pot melted the back membrane panel. This should never ever have happened! I have reached out to Whirlpool/Maytag and have advised them of the problem, but received no resolution. I have since replaced the membrane that has melted and no further damage was noted, but had I not been there, this could have been a lot more catastrophic if my teenage children were using the stove. A part of my stove should NEVER EVER melt!

The product, in the report: Maytag Gas Range with gas oven. Stainless steel. Full-size. Slide in.
The knobs on our Maytag gas range have been inadvertantly turned one while moving and working about the range and adjacent counters. The knobs are very easily depressed and tristed enough to cause them to leak gas or completely ignight accidentially. This has happened 25-30 times since we purchased the range. Most concerning, the valve is cracked open, we don’t hear the gas excaping, then the house fills with natural gas. Three times in the last 6 months we have had this happen. One time we had to leave the property after the problem was discoverd upon our return from an hour long trip. No doubt, if we were gone for longer the thermostat or other electrical ignition source would have ignitted the gas and blown our house, animals, and possibly us to knidom come. Again, the knobs are very easily depressed (just ounces of downward pressure) and then easily tristed by simply moving past them, tristing, or brushing with regular kitchen items, food items, a plate, your belly, an arm, etc. The house filling with gas or the knob just getting turned on has likely happened 25-30 times, perhaps more, since the unit was purchased new. The final time it happened is listed below.

Maytag Stove model mgs8800fz0. The control knobs have an insert into the knob post that does not run the full length of the post. As such, the insert can accidentally be pushed in to such a distance that the knob does not function accurately and becomes loose against the gas control as it has too much play. We had an incident where the knob indicated a closed (shut off) position but the gas was not fully turned off.

The product, in the report: gas stove
June 8, 2020
I am doing this paper work for my 90 year old aunt, [REDACTED] who lives at [REDACTED]. Telephone Number: [REDACTED]
Her oven was a Maytag manufactured by Whirlpool. Model number MGRH75280W, Serial Number 1502-6162LL. Approximately 13 years old.
The oven was on for approximately 35 minutes. She was baking cookies. All at once she saw flames inside the oven on the left side. She went to her pantry and grabbed a bag of flour and poured it on the spreading flames. The flames luckily went out. She was very traumatized as she is under medical care. She got her walker and went out into her front yard and screamed for someone to call the fire department. The fire department came and made sure the flames were out. They then unhooked the gas line from the stove and turned it off. The stove now sits in her garage. She has purchased a new stove, an [REDACTED]. Cost is over $800.00.
I called Whirlpool on her behalf on May 26 and talked to the safety department (800-344-1274). They were less then friendly when I told them what happened. They said they would give her $100.00. I told them that was not a proper amount and they were lucky no one was seriously injured as they are connected condo units. I told them that they have had a lot of recalls according to reports on the internet. I told them I was going to file a report with the proper agency and they said to go ahead, but $100.00 was the best they could do.

The product, in the report: gas oven
Caller is reporting that the gas oven came on by itself and started to engulf the room with smoke. The smoke was dispersing from the control panel. She stated that they contacted the fire department, they came out and disconnected the oven. Caller feels that if they were not present the unit would have exploded and caused a house fire . There were no prior incidents they may have standard services but nothing major. Caller stated that after 24 hours the house has an electrical fire odor, her eyes still burns from the smoke.
The manufacturer was contacted and they advised her that all appliances dies after 15 years, however, this does not seem to be safe for any consumer,
Caller feels that this oven is a fire hazard and should be investigated.

The product, in the report: dual oven gas range
The gas range is a Maytag Gemini and is about 15 years old.
It was plugged in but turned off. No burners or oven were on. We heard the clicking sound of an igniter for about 5 seconds (igniters are used to create spark to light a particular stovetop burner). We then heard popping noises and smoke began to emanate from the stovetop on the right side of the range top by the burner controls. I opened the upper oven and there was fire visible to the right side through the clear lens for the oven interior light, again on the side proximal to the burner controls. I was able to move the range and unplug it; however the smoke continued. I had a fire extinguisher on hand, but the fire went out on its own after about 10 to 20 seconds. There was a distinct smell of an electrical fire in the room. I turned off the gas valve leading to the range. After 30 mins to be sure it do not reignite, I inspected the range by removing the back panel and lifting the top. Under the top where the burner controls are located one of the controls had charring of wires and soot from the fire. The insulating bracket around the oven also had charring or soot visible. The images show the layout of the range and the specific controller that was burned. Charred wiring is visible as well as charring and soot in the surrounding area. The burner control is a combination of gas valve and electric components, presumably used to activate the igniter for that respective burner.
We were very fortunate to be home at the time or it could have potentially been destroyed by fire had the fire spread beyond the range itself. At home were also our three pets, plus a neighbors pet. I plan to dispose of the unit (not sell it) as it is clear fire hazard due to this incident of spontaneous ignition.

The product, in the report: Maytag Freestanding Double Oven, five burner Gas Range MGT8820DS00
I have a Maytag Gas Range, Model MGT8820DS00 It has twice now had the same issue. One of the control knobs for the surface burners seizes up and the gas supply cannot be turned off with the control knobs. We tried to turn off the gas but had to move the range away from the wall, unplug it and turn the supply of gas off at the main valve shutoff.
The first time, the second from the right seized and even though we got it turned enough to extinguish the flame, and we thought it was out, later we discovered there was still enough of a gas leaking out to slowly fill my kitchen area with gas fumes. Maytag/Whirlpool sent [REDACTED] out. They replaced the entire “manifold”, which houses all five control knobs for all of the surface burners. This was in December of 2017. This time, it is the first knob on the left that did the exact same thing. The burner was on and could not be turned off at all. The valve stem froze in the “high” on position and we had to move the stove and turn off at the main shutoff and unplug it. Maytag/Whirlpool is refusing to fix this issue, even though this is a safety concern. If we replace the valve ourselves the manufacturer says it will void any liability for the entire operations of the product. So we can’t even replace the valve ourselves. This will relieve them of all liability if something happens and it kills someone or blows up the house!

The product, in the report: Oven Range
The consumer indicates that the knobs to her oven range are very sensitive and they turn on when somebody accidently brushes against them, unbeknownst to the person. Many times the consumer has found her oven on when not in use, and other times she has been alerted because of the smell of leaking gas. The consumer states she noticed the issue about one month after the oven range was purchased.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation. The Manufacturer has sent at least six Service Technicians to inspect the oven range however they have not been able to recreate the problem and thus no solution has been made; the issue persists.
The consumer states that the cooktop is used two to three times per day whereas the oven is used approximately once daily. The consumer plans on keeping her oven range for the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.

The product, in the report: Gas range kitchen stove
Dear Sirs, I write this letter to bring to your attention what I think are dangerous flaws in the design of gas stoves currently in use.
To operate these stoves (mine in particular, a Maytag model MGR5765 QDW) one turns a dial counter clockwise. When the dial turns about 30 degrees an ignition spark is started and gas begins to flow. The burner lights.
However, if one turns the dial quickly to an through the ignition function no spark is produced, but the gas does flow and does not ignite! A child might do this or someone in a hurry ot distracted. In 10 to 20 seconds enough gas escapes to make a small explosion. But if minutes go by there will be a large explosion. If many minutes go by etc., etc.
And now comes the second dangerous flaw. when one smells gas the normal reaction for most people will be to turn the dial to OFF. But when the dial passes through the ignition position it will produce a spark and the gas WILL EXPLODE.
I have to wonder if you or the manufacturers or anyone is aware of this situation. It would seem to me that if the igniter could be altered so a not to spark when turning the burner off that might be a partial solution.
In any case, gas must not flow until spark is on, stable and proven... Spark must not occur during shut off.
I hope I have explained this clearly. If not I would be Happy to discuss it further.
Yours Truly, [REDACTED]

I purchased a Maytag gas stove from Sears applicable center in Pearland, TX. Sears professionally installed the stove. Within 2 months the clear coat on the top of the stove began to come off the paint. We contacted Sears who agreed to replace the top. Within 2 months the clear coat again began bubbling and coming off the stove, within few months the black paint began to come off in spots. We were told that the 1 year warranty was up. We are not sure if the stove is safe to operate with flames and peeling paint.
The next issue is the stove has knobs located in the front of the stove, when the oven or burners are used, the knobs get hot and a child could get burned.
We have only used this stove to cook in a single family household. We have used the self cleaning oven 1 time. We have never used abrasives to clean the stove as directed.
This stove is not safe to use around our grandchildren or disabled people nor is it safe to operate for possible fire hazard.
This stove should be recalled as a hazard.

I must have leaned into the range’s right front burner knob and moved to the left, causing the right front burner to spontaneously ignite, nearly causing the sleeve of my long sleeved shirt to catch fire. The knobs on this range pose two potential safely hazards. # 1) They turn on much too easily- very little if any resistance when pushed in & rotated. # 2) These knobs become very hot when the oven is in use, particularly if the broiler setting is on.

About 20 minutes into our meal, we heard a long, loud whooshing/shattering noise. Got up, looked around, in the kitchen we saw shattered glass all over the floor in front of the oven. Last evening the oven door on our Maytag Range exploded into a million pieces all over the kitchen. The oven was not on at the time. Our son was heating something on a burner on low heat. Our 4 hear old grandson had just left the kitchen. Thank God no one was injured. I immediately called Maytag. Their response was, it’s out of warranty. I told they they needed to do something. They said they would send someone out to look at it but it would cost about $120.00. I told them I shouldn’t have to pay for them to have someone look at something that could have injured us. I then went online and found over 300 complaints from people with the same experience with Maytag, [REDACTED], [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and all claimed the company would try to make it their fault. Like they bunped it or dropped something on it. This cannot be allowed to continue. You must do something to help consumers. We are in our 70’s and have paid over $700. for this range and cannot afford to buy a new one. These manufacturers need to be held responsible for these dangerous incidents and replace the faulty stoves. They need to rethink the way they are making them in order that they not pose a safety hazard for unsuspecting consumers. Thank you for any help you can give.

The product, in the report: Gemini® 30” Double Oven Freestanding Gas Range
I purchased a home with the Gemini® 30” Double Oven Freestanding Gas Range by Maytag in it two years. I have used this range without incident until yesterday. I baked and turned the oven off upon leaving the house. When I returned a hour later the lower oven was on full blast and the entire unit was too hot to touch - almost red hot. It would not turn off despite hitting cancel multiple times. I called my handyman who had to use hot pads and rags to pull it from the wall and unplug it. When plug back in the lower oven heats rapidly to a high temp. The wall, counters and surrounding areas were warm to touch. it took 15+ minutes for unit to cool. I’m so lucky I came back when I did - it def would have caused a fire. My handyman guessed the control unit was bad but why it comes on when not prompted is a mystery and incredibly dangerous. I’m wondering if others have had this problem and if there is a recall.

The Maytag model MGR8800DE0 (purchased new in 2015) Serial Number R42010229 has knobs to turn on the gas to the stove top which are TOO easy to turn.
I have found them turn on slightly and have smelled gas on numerous occasions. They can be bumped and turn on. And more importantly, my 20 month old grandson (toddler) was able to turn them on.
The potential for an explosion and fire with possible injury or death is significant.
I have reported this to Maytag via their website but have not yet heard back from them.

The product, in the report: Maytag stainless steel with convection and warming tray.
I have noticed the problem several times before- but it became a particular issue on Thanksgiving. The oven was on and pots were on the stove. as my daughter was helping and my young grandchildren were in the kitchen I became very aware of how dangerous our new gas range was. You couldn’t go anywhere near it as it was very hot- both the oven door and especially the area above the door. You cannot lean against it or accidentally touch it. The control knobs become hot as well. I have never known a stove where you cannot touch the controls when the oven is on. This is a serious situation.

Exploding oven glass Maytag Gemini Gas Double Oven Range Model #MGT8655XW00 Serial # D04042021
Outer oven glass of large oven exploded out into the kitchen. Oven was not in use at the time. I contacted Maytag, but they were totally disinterested and didn’t even respond to my emails. It’s being reported now as I thought at the time it was possibly a unique circumstance. In looking online now I see the incidents have skyrocketed, yet nothing has been done.
Whether design or quality, a fix should be mandated from all manufacturers and recalls implemented. Had a child (and there are children present) been walking by when this happened, it would have been exactly even with their face. I can’t comprehend this being ignored when the problem is so widespread and across all manufacturers.

The product, in the report: Gas range or stove
After finishing Thanksgiving dinner I set the range for the oven self cleaning. I followed the instructions to the letter. The spillage was small, so I set for the shortest cleaning cycle. About one hour in the cycle we heard a loud pop sound and we discovered that the most inner glass of the oven had shattered to smithereens. I cancel the cleaning process at once and the range entered a long period of cool off. I took photographs of the damage.

The product, in the report: Gas range model MGR8674AS
I have a Maytag gas range Model MGR8674AS that has knobs on the front of the unit above the oven door. The slightest pressure on them causes the gas to start flowing. I have had several situations where someone leaned on it to reach something nearby and turned the gas on slightly. The auto ignition clicker sound did not turn on to alert you that the gas is flowing. Shortly thereafter, I have had natural gas filling the air in my kitchen and then throughout my home. If this were to happen prior to someone leaving the home, it could be disastrous upon their return when they unlock the door to get inside. This is not an isolated incident. It has happened to my family on more than one occasion. Incredibly dangerous for adults as well as children. All it takes is to brush up against the knob for it to turn on.

After finishing the pasta and turning the stove off, flames began shooting out of the handles, and the lights began to flicker, smoke came out of the stove, and the breaker was tripped. The product, in the report: Maytag Gas Range Model# MGR7662WW
10/21/12 a) Purchased from Home Depot, a Gas Range Oven (with 5 year Protection Plan). Model# MGR7662WW . 05/05/13 a) Used Self Cleaning Oven for first time. b) 1/2 later, the inside glass shattered all throughout the oven. For several hours as stove cooled down, I could hear glass falling inside the range. c) Contacted Home Depot Warranty Number [REDACTED] and reported the incident to a rep named [REDACTED]. She mentioned that she had heard of it happening before. d) Agent said someone would be out on Tuesday (05/07/13) to repair the range. e) I told the agent that I wanted to request a replacement range because I would not be comfortable with the possibility of remaining glass left in the oven, falling into my food. f) Agent told me that I would have to escalate that to the tech upon arrival. g) Incident #[REDACTED] issued to me.
05/07/13 a) Contacted by tech [REDACTED], from A&E Factory Service. b) Tech says he could not expedite my request for a replacement range. Said he didn’t have the authority to do so. c) Since glass had to be replaced anyway, tech orders and replaces glass and uses a vacuum to try and suck out the shattered glass. d) I called the Home Depot warranty number again and spoke with a rep named [REDACTED]. Told her that the rep couldn’t escalate. She told me that I would have to escalate to Home Depot. d) I contacted the local Home Depot Service manager where I purchased the range. I told her my concerns about the broken glass and not feeling comfortable cooking and eating from a range that had shattered glass all inside the range. I also shared with her that the tech could not determine what caused it to happen. And, I also told her of my request for a replacement range and the finger pointing between the Warranty dept and tech). I was told by the Service Manager that she understood my concerns and apologized for what I’d experienced, but Home Depot could not replace the range and gave me the number to Maytag [REDACTED]. The Home Depot manager said only Maytag would have the decision to replace the range.
05/09/13 a) After a day and a half of trying to properly contact and communicate with Maytag, I finally reached one of their agents, [REDACTED], who was rather rude, abrupt and abrasive in her tone of voice to me. As I tried to explain my situation, she would cut me off and tell me that if my range was fixed there was nothing else Maytag could do. I finally had to request her to change her tone of voice and to stop being abrasive in her voice to me. Her tone of voice and behavior kind of subsided afterwards. She then said she would look into the incident report from A&E Factory Service and call me back. b) The Maytag rep, [REDACTED] called me back and told me that A&E Factory Service had repaired the glass and there was nothing else that Maytag could do and apologized for the glass shattering. She says that Maytag should have responded to the call and since they did not, they cannot substantiate my claim and would not replace the range. I asked for escalation. She told me there was no escalation. She had already done so. c) I ended the call by politely telling her that I would do my own escalation.

I have a maytag gemini double oven with a broiler feature in the top oven. The broiler sets fire to food/pans in it very easily. A couple times it has been very small and gone out on its own. Today it was big enough that we needed a fire extinguisher to put it out. I have never had this issue with other ovens in my life. I always use the broiler on the lowest setting also.

He contacted the manufacturer again who reset the unit. He said 6 months later it started doing the same thing again. The gas ignited under the cook surface and melted all the wires while not turned on. He says the unit started spraying gas.
He says the manufacturer is not willing to provide any further assistance other than sending out a technician for a fee, to do the same thing as before.

Consumer went to pre-heat the oven by pressing bake. The temperature did not change on the oven. The consumer opened the oven door and smelled a strong gas smelled. The oven was then turned off and the oven door was left opened. To air out his home he also opened the windows inside to rid the gas vapors.
Once the vapors cleared, the consumer attempted to pre-heat the oven again. He left the oven door opened and heard clicks coming from the unit. The gas vapors began to emit and the oven still did not heat.
The consumer states the broiler and the stove works fine. The only problem is with the baking function of the range.
1/30/13- The manufacturer sent a repairman ([REDACTED]) to fix the range. The spark wasn’t sparking at the ignitor because the wire was not insulated. 2/4/13- [REDACTED] from the manufacturer was contacted. She told the consumer that there were no previous problems with the range. He stated he preferred to have a new range instead of having the new range repaired. She stated his warranty only covered repairs, not replacements.
Another repairman ([REDACTED]) was sent out to fix the same issue with the range. The ignitor was adjusted to be closer to the gas line to help it slight be the spark.
2/2/13- The retailer was contacted and referred the consumer to the manufacturer.
The consumer believes that this a defect in the range. The spark needed does not ignite so gas will emit though the oven which is not heating.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
The consumer says when cooking over the stove he began to smell the strong presence of gas. This happened very seldom at first. He would get light headaches as a result. He contacted the manufacturer who took him to the safety dept who sent out a representative.
The tech ordered a gasket for all four burners but it was not available. After a few weeks they came to the conclusion that the part is not being made anymore and said he had to purchase a new unit. He did not realize right away were the presence of gas was coming from.
UPDATE: I built my home in 1996 and had a Maytag Gas Range installed by a licensed Plummer. The unit was purchased from Montgomery Ward’s store in Beaumont, TX. Some time after purchasing the unit I began to smell a faint scent of raw natural gas when cooking on top of the stove. Initially it was difficult to detect where the gas scent was coming from, as the odor would always be mixed with the food odors .I have experienced headaches that I now attribute to the fumes from the stove. This brand and model were selected because of Maytag’ s advertisement. It was portrayed as a range with very low repair maintenance. The safety feature included having sealed burners on the range. These features were important to me. About six years ago I called the Maytag Company to complain about the smell of gas while using the burners. Customer Service was not helpful. They brushed me aside saying they were sorry and that the range was out of warranty. Again, in early December of 2012, I called the Maytag Company only to be informed that it is now The Maytag Whirlpool Company. I explained my problem, giving the model and serial numbers to Customer Service. I was referred to the safety department. I again explained my smelling of raw gas when the burners were on and the problem was getting worse. On December 27,2012 The Maytag Whirlpool Company sent a factory service technician to access the problem. The technician confirmed that this model uses sealed burners to keep spills contained and to keep raw gas from escaping. This is done with gaskets for each burner. The gaskets would get hot, wet, and cool down repeatedly which made them prone to cracking and or deteriorating. An attempt was made by the technician to order all new gaskets at no cost to me for the burners, only to be informed that they were no longer available. Maytag Whirlpool came to the conclusion that the parts were not being made anymore and that I had to purchase a new unit. I was offered only 15% off on a new unit. I feel this is not adequate compensation for the ongoing problems that I have experienced. Enclosed are copies of a receipt and a card from the Technician. Thank you for any consideration given this matter, as I have been a loyal user of your products .(Washer/Dryer and Dishwasher which were also purchased when the home was built)

Maytag gas range model# MGR8880AB. The oven had several problems but most importantly, when the oven is set to 400F or more, it cannot stop preheating. The needle of a separate oven thermometer strained past 550F (the thermometer’s upper limit) and the oven was still preheating. We don’t know how high the temperature really got and we shut off the oven when we realized what was happening so luckily, nothing bad happened. We’ve called Maytag’s customer service hotline and Maytag sent a repair company which has unsuccessfully tried 4 times in the past month to fix this problem. We were told by the repair company that it’s a control module problem. They’ve tried replacing the module twice with new parts ordered from Maytag. The first time they tried replacing it, the repair guy told us that the new part was defective so he had to order another new part. The second time he replaced it, the oven still gave us the same problems. We’ve spoken to Maytag’s reps several times but they’ve refused to replace our product or even refund us and are insisting that we have the repair company send someone out as many times as necessary to fix the oven. We’re very worried because it’s a gas range with a defective control panel that can’t seem to be repaired or even diagnosed by experienced repairmen.

Maytag Gas Range MOD: MGR7662WB 1 SER: R00514282. A safety concern I have noticed with this range is the physical location of the control knows are above the oven door. If the oven is used for approx 2+ hours, the knobs soften and it is not possible to turn off stove top burners. If the knobs are removed, it is often difficult to turn the stove top burners off using pliers. It appears as if the brass valves swell due to heat and cannot be turned off. A few times, I have been forced to pull the stove away from the wall, while the oven and burners were lit, to turn off the natural gas supply causing the burners to extinguisher. This, of course allows the necessary cooling so he gas valves can be closed.
I have called Maytag a few times on this, beginning 11/2/2012, again on 11/20/2012, both times being promised a call back form someone in the “safety” department. A final attempt on 12/10/2012 was met with resistance from Maytag simply stating “we have no complaints of that problem”. I am unable to get any results from Maytag.

Repair person came out, and recorded temperature of the outside of the oven and recorded 250 degrees Fahrenheit on the outside of the control panel.
Oven represents a serious danger and my wife and I were both burned by touching the control pad of the oven.
Despite my repeated attempts to lodge a complaint with the manufacturer, the company contends that this high temperature is “normal” and is within their specifications.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gemini gas range (double oven) black. MGR6875ADB serial # 20973821LJ
Maytag Gemini gas range (approximately 3 years old) turns its ovens on by itself, usually in the middle of the night. This took us a while to figure out as it is located in our second home which is only used 9 weeks a year (summer). For a while, we just thought we needed to cut power and reboot, but that doesn’t solve the problem. As we reviewed our winter gas bills, the gas expense was hundreds of dollars higher the winter of 2010-11 (we threw the breaker panel this past winter). To our horror we realized the oven was on most if not the entire winter at 350 degrees. Now Sears is going to install a new circuit board, (for $500) but are we to trust the new one anymore that the original one that was just about brand new? The stove/oven has probably been used a total of 100 times over the past three years. This is extremely dangerous and could easily start a fire. I’m surprised we didn’t lose our entire house the winter of 2010.

She can hear a clicking sound when trying to turn on the heating element but it will not turn on. The consumer says the unit is sometimes extremely hot. She is afraid of a possible fire hazard. She contacted the manufacturer, who only offered a repair for a fee. The consumer says a technician came to inspect the unit about a year ago who said nothing was wrong with it.
UPDATE: I had a [REDACTED] gas range that would not work properly, because it seemed to be too hot. When I cooked meat or cookies they were not cooked evenly I don’t know how old the range was, but I didn’t move to present address until 10/2004 and it came with the house. I decided on buying a new one, because to call a repairman seemed useless due the age of the range I went to Home Depot & purchased one. It has digital buttons. At first, I thought it was just me, but even my daughter tried using it. Press bake, the temp would automatically go to 350 degrees, then you had to press temp gauge button what temp you wanted .. . then it would show 100 degrees again, showing you the temp rising to where you wanted as it heated up. You would get either . 1) nothing at 100 ..... 2) 100 with smell of gas with a clicking sound .. no heat because oven did not go on 3) sometimes if you are “lucky”, the oven would eventually heat up to the temp you wanted (took a several minutes) then a bell would go off to let you know the oven was “ready”. It was & is terrible situation especially if you had a special dinner planned I am filing this complaint to see if “others” had the same experience.

The product, in the report: kitchen gas range, with convection option in oven
Purchased a Maytag Gas Range (Model MGR7775WB) in July, 2011. I had several incidents of leaning against the knobs on the front of the range and having them turn on just enough to allow the gas to come through. Once I was leaning over the stove to clean it and the knob turned on and the gas burner ignited right under me. Luckily I was not burned. In the fall I contacted the Maytag customer service and explained my problem and my concerns through their on-line system. I few days later I received a voice mail from someone at Maytag regarding my complaint. Over the next several weeks I called the number I was given and left messages that I was returning this message. No one ever called me back. The problem has continued, although I have tried to be more careful when working around my stove. I have had gas ranges all my life, and have never had this problem. All of the ranges I had in the past required me to firmly push in on the knob and then overcome a slight friction or bump in order to turn on the gas. On this stove, there does not seem to be this “friction” factor, so casually leaning against the knobs allows them to turn just enough to allow the gas to come through.
Yesterday I was in my kitchen, not doing anything at my range, and left the room for about 45 minutes. When I returned, I noticed a strong odor of gas and looked at the range, and sure enough one of the knobs was slightly turned on. It must have happened as I brushed by the stove, as I did not use it for anything, nor did I work at or near it. I quickly left the room, opened a window on the back porch and went to a distant part of the house to allow the gas to dissipate.
I sent another communication to the Maytag corporation about this continuing problem. someone did call me back immediately. Her reply to my complaint was that she would “make a note of this design issue.” and to urge “caution” when around my range. My concern was that this situation is extremely dangerous. Had i left my house for the entire day, my house would have been full of gas by the time I got home and could easily have exploded when I returned and opened the door. (Some years ago I had a house a couple of doors down from a house where this exact scenario happened. It literally exploded off its foundations when accumulated gas from a leak ignited.) I also pointed out that I or someone else could be severely burned if a burner ignited again while someone was leaning over the stove. This also represents a danger to homes where there are small children, as a small child could with NO EFFORT whatsoever turn on the gas burners of this stove. She seemed completely uninterested in this issue of the potential dangers here.

The product, in the report: Gas Range- 4 burners
The consumer stated that after the gas range was installed she noticed that if someone accidentally bumped onto the control knobs it would turn on or sometimes it would ignite. She contacted the dealer and a service rep was sent out on 12/15/11 and he advised that the range was working properly.
3/1/12 A representative from the dealer came out and offered some knob covers to temporarily resolve the issue.
3/2/12 The manufacturer was contacted and a customer rep advised that they are aware of the problem but they did not have a solution for the problem.
The consumer is concerned that this gas range which is fairly new has a faulty designed which is an health and fire hazard to herself and her family, and feels that this product should be investigated.

The product, in the report: Maytag (Whirlpool) 24” black gas wall oven with broiler door. The control panel is digital and located on the top left corner of the face. Below the control panel is the flu vent with no ribs (opening approx 12”). The door of both the oven and the broiler door are glass.
I viewed 24” gas wall ovens on the Lowes website. Local Lowes stores do not carry 24” ovens for viewing on the floor. My wife and I then purchased the Maytag (Whirlpool) 24” gas wall oven Model: CWG3100AAB25; Serial: DY1703470 from our local Lowes store # 0473 in Vienna, WV. This oven was installed on February 20, 2012 (superb installation). Upon first use, my wife burned her hand on the external flu vent. This vent sticks out 1 to 1.5 inches from the face of the oven, is constructed of black painted metal, and is located between the control panel and the oven handle. The flu vent is connected directly to the oven’s internal chimney allowing for heat conduction from the inside of the oven directly to the external flu vent ribs. (i.e. if the interior of the oven is 450 degrees, the external flu vent is 450 degrees) My wife burned her hand by accidentally brushing the vent on her first use of the oven.

The product, in the report: Maytag Gemini double gas oven MGR6875ads
On February 11, 2012, my Maytag double oven MGR6875ADS, caught on fire, caused by a faulty electrical panel in the back of the oven. (the electric switch that ignites the gas oven) The fire started to shoot out of the upper right hand side of the oven. Luckily the fire alarms went off, and we were able to put out the fire before my entire house went up in flames. The oven was bought in 2006. Back 3 years ago, we had a Maytag repairman come out and switch out the electrical switch, that powers on the gas oven, he replaced the convection fan as well. 3 years later, the unit caught on fire. Looking at the internet, I spotted the there had been a voluntary recall on this product 2 years before I had ever bought the oven, and Maytag/Whirlpool failed to keep from selling the faulty oven. There are numerous stories on the internet that tell you of customers being shocked, burned, and flames breaking out in these ovens... The house damage was just under 10,000, and all that Whirlpool is willing to offer me is $600.00 toward my new oven. So Whirlpool, depreciated my oven 65% over 5 years. I wanted to send this out to let everyone know, that Whirlpool was not even willing to take care of my insurance deductible, much less replace my appliance that burned up, or give me money to buy a new one to replace the one that burned, due to their negligence, and lack of recalling all ovens. Whirlpool will also be quick to tell you that Maytag in 2005 is not them. Just an FYI for all future Maytag/Whirlpool double oven buyers, they will sell you an appliance, but they are not willing to take care of their customers, when they appliance almost claims your home and family. Shame on you Whirlpool!

The consumer stated that his free standing gas range with double doors is potential safety hazard. The consumer stated that he heard a loud bang from the range when his wife used the convection oven function almost instantly. The consumer could hear a hissing noise and smelled gas immediately. The consumer went over and shut off the gas valve right away. The loud noise triggered the circuit breaker. The consumer stated that at the time he was not harmed or injured by the product he did not call the fire department. The consumer did not call his home insurance company.
The consumer placed a call to the firm the same day and the firm sent out an independent serviceman at their expense and arrived four days later (January 26th 2012) The consumer spoke with the repairman and that the gas hose behind the range had a orange mark and noticed that the valve where the gas line appears to be exposed. The repairman replaced the hose valve, applied heat resistant tape to the range. However, the consumer had to leave his home and buy a replacement for the repairman.

The product, in the report: Gas Range
Gas Range purchased September 2011
Wife was turning oven on to preheat December 31st, 2011, she heard tick, tick, tick sounds usually associated with the lighting, the oven never ignited but gas never stopped flowing either.
Wife opened oven door to see if it was lit because she didn’t hear it light and got a face full of gas, she instinctively closed the door back & called her husband who advised her to never close the door when this happened and pressed shut off.
Caller and wife opened the windows and turned on the high speed blower and it still took at least five minutes to clear all the gas out.
This incident happened around January 7, 2012 and then again on January 21, 2012. They have now stopped using the range.
Caller said that old stoves had a safety built in so that if burner/oven didn’t light the gas flow would have been stopped, however when he asked what the safety is on his presently owned range is he was told that there is none.
He is reporting this range as a severe hazard stating that if his wife had turned the range on to preheat and then walked downstairs she never would have known that the gas was steadily coming out while the ignition had not ignited.
He called the manufacturer January 23, 2012, spoke with [redacted] in General Services Department who created file#[REDACTED] then transferred caller to [redacted] in the Safety Department.
Caller is reporting this range as a severe safety hazard and would very much like to exchange the range for one with same manufacturer but that has a Safety Glow Coil that would manage the flow of the gas. He said that this range presents a catastrophic problem that he believes could result in much more than property damage.

Consumer stated that she has been experiencing problems with the gas range/oven, these included the knobs for the stovetop which melted and was replaced in 2/2011, the front of the range becomes overwhelming hot that she received a mild burnt on her right arm just by brushing against the range. The oven racks are not secured which collapsed causing her baking pan to overturned and could have caused a fired if there was any liquid inside.
Consumer didnot need medical attention for injury.
1/5/2011 Consumer contacted the manufacturer and was advised that the racks would be replaced but they would not be willing to repair the problem of the range overheating because it was out of warranty and it could be done at a cost to her. Consumer is concerned that this gas range is a safety hazard and should be recalled.

About 1 year after we purchased the range, the safety valve was leaking and had to be replaced. A few weeks ago the electronic ignitions just started to go off and not stop until I unplugged the range. When I called Magtag I was told that if the burners were wet or out of place that could cause that to happen. I expressed my concerns if this happened and no one was home, what could happen! Well today, the ignitions did that again, they continued to keep clicking away. I was in the other room, by the time I got to the kitchen there was a puff of smoke from one of the burners and then then a fire surrounding the dials. This also blew the circuit breaker. This could have been disasterous if I were not home to put out the fire and unplug the range. Maytag Gemini Model # MGR6875ADB serial # 12764984GG

Maytag MGT8885xw. We have had less than a year. It took us 9 months to figure out, we had an inherent problem with the regulator/ burner in the top oven. It was not lighting the whole way during ignition, and as such was letting gas escape and fill up the house. After filling up the house in less than 15 minutes, we reported to Maytag. A service technician came out under the warranty, assessed the situation, and it took 2+ months to obtain the required parts and fix. No parts were immediately available in the entire country. (July to September 2011) The second problem happend Sunday 9/25/11. The exterior lower oven glass spontaneously exploded with the oven off. Maytag sent out a technician to “assess problem” although we had provided a picture. Part was not immediately available. The did find it in Louisville, KY. Resolution is to reinstall glass.

The product, in the report: Maytag advanced cooking system super capacity plus gas convection oven / range
I am writing to advise you of a serious hazard uncovered with a Maytag “advanced cooking system super capacity plus gas convection oven / range that could have resulted in a house explosion.”
My wife was baking a cake and while the oven was on we both proceeded to do some gardening outside. Awhile later my wife went back into the house to check on the cake. She immediately rushed out to tell me the house was filled with gas. I immediately cancelled the oven concerned that even that activity could cause a spark that would ignite the gas. The central air conditioner was on and the gas odor permeated the entire house from the basement to the second floor. I know the oven did initially ignite as the cake ultimately was half baked.
Following opening windows and doors, I called our gas provider. It was Saturday and they sent a service technician out on an emergency call. He electronically sniffed out the area and determined that the gas was coming from the stove (oven). I explained to him that recently, when the oven was first turned on that we were hearing a “puff” at ignition but never smelled any gas. I was shocked when he told me that based upon my description and the age of the stove, he knew exactly what was wrong and that he had experienced this many times before. He advised me that the ignitor, with age, develops resistance and doesn’t always get hot enough to ignite the burner or if the burner does ignite, it sometimes only partially ignites the burner allowing it to leak gas. He measured the current to the ignitor and confirmed that it was too resistive and the current was too low to function reliably. He replaced the ignitor ($160.50) and everything was fine from that point on. Obviously, we are still concerned.
My wife was always fearful of using the oven’s timed delay to bake for this very reason. I always thought the oven had a safety mechanism such as my gas dryer that requires a heat sensor to trip before the gas valve would open. Fortunately, my wife never felt comfortable with using the timed delay and I am grateful that she did not. I could only imagine what would have happened if we were out of the house for several hours with the oven leaking especially since we have both a gas furnace and a gas hot water heater.
When the stove was fairly new, I expressed concerns with the burner ignitor. I experienced a situation whereby one burner ignitor failed. Since all the ignitor spark simultaneously, the gas from the burner with the failed ignitor traveled to one of the other burner ignitor causing a little explosion.
I wrote Matag and was basically told that unfortunately parts are made by humans and therefore cannot be perfect
Considering the risk associated with this failure, I feel this response is inadequate and should be recalled.

The product, in the report: Maytag gas range, Model #MGR8670WS
We purchased a Maytag range Model #MGR8670WS on 3/30/11 at Home Depot in Pearland, Texas. The range, Serial #R11 014805, was delivered & installed on 4/1. We first lit the oven on 412 and the sides & top became “extremely” hot, too hot to touch with my hand or fingers, in a short time before reaching set temp of 350 degrees, and we had to immediately shut it off. The unit as well as the adjacent cabinets remained very hot for a long time even after it was shut off. We called Home Depot and were advised to call Maytag. We called and a technician came on 4/6. He looked at the stove without moving it, advised us to not use it, and said to call Home Depot. We called Home Depot that day and went to the store on 417. Fearful of fire danger with that model we chose a different model which was delivered and installed on 4/14. The apparently defective and possibly dangerous unit was uninstalled at that time and returned to Home Depot. Upon examining that stove, Model #MGR8670WS as it was being uninstalled, we, and the installers realized there is NO, or very little insulation in that unit, hence very likely creating an extremely hazardous condition which could cause damage and injury.
