The product, in the report: Magic Chef Oven Range Burner Model Number: CGR1425ADW, Serial Number 14315542JG, gas range
While I was at my office in Brooklyn, New York, my neighbor called to inform me that smoke was coming out of my apartment. By the time I arrived, the fire department was already inside, extinguishing a fire in my Magic Chef oven, which had ignited on its own. As a result, the entire apartment was filled with heavy smoke and became uninhabitable. Because of the damage, I had to temporarily leave the apartment. I hired professional cleaners to wash the walls, remove cabinets, and clean or remove smoke-damaged furniture, curtains, mattresses, carpet, and clothing. The entrance door, which was damaged by the fire department when they forced entry, had to be replaced by a contractor immediately. The balcony door was also forcibly opened by the fire department and still requires repair. At present, I am arranging for contractors to repaint the walls and ceilings and to redo the wood floors so that the apartment is properly restored and safe for my child. In addition, I purchased a commercial air purifier, which the doorman has been operating daily to help air out the apartment. Until all repairs and repainting are completed, I cannot allow my young child to return to live there safely.

The product, in the report: Magic Chef 20 inch kitchen range, gas converted professionally to LP. White, Model No. 11JN-10K, serial number: 19C 231511733. Purchased about 1/1992.
Magic Chef 20” gas range model No. 11JN-10K, serial no. 19C 231511733 was professionally installed in granny unit above my garage in 1992. Used successfully but infrequently since that time. Guests staying in unit this week noted sudden onset of high heat in the unit on return from afternoon activities. The oven in the unit was ON, running full bore apparently with no thermostatic control and also with all switches and knobs in the OFF position. Guests had not used the range at all. I personally confirmed all knobs in off position and yet broiler burner running. Unit was hot enough to damage the cabinet work on each side. I turned off gas supply and electric breaker. If guests had not been staying in unit this would have gone undiscovered and set fire to my house.

The product, in the report: Magic Chef gas range 30”, white
Magic chef brand gas range sef ignited in middle of night, broiler raged like blowtorch for hours until homeowner awakened by smell of smoke permeating house. All range controls were in Off position. Intense heat. 9-1-1 called, fire dept shut gas, disconnected appliance. They were perplexed by addition as all controls were off on stove and homeowner was not operating stove. Home sustained smoke damage and property damage from fire safety check. Entire house could have burnt down, injury or death could have resulted to homeowner as well as connected dwelling town home residents. Brand has a history of self igniting, causing home fires (as learned after the fact.)

The product, in the report: Magic Chef 30” Gas Range (Model: CGR3740ADL; SN: 15895315WM).
We have Magic Chef 30” Gas Range (Model: CGR3740ADL; SN: 15895315WM). This unit started mal-functioning by beeping and at times LCD clock would fade. After cycling the power, it would work then stop again. The clock would beep again at times and instead of clock, it would show dots or lines. Since we didn’t do much baking, we opted to call a repairman after our vacation. A few weeks later, a day before our vacation, it turned on the oven by itself. My mother was home alone reading a religious book, she smelled something burning and by the time she looked around, she saw thick smoke coming from the kitchen area. She almost had a panic attack and called 911 to have them put out the fire. Now only god knows what would have happed if this was to occur while we were on vacation. Upon googling this problem online, I found that I am not the only victim. I am saving this unit for your product safety team to study this unit so that it does not happen to anyone ever again. I have also sent an email to Whirlpool asking them to study this unit and for compensation.

The product, in the report: Four burner 30” gas range
Caller is reporting a 30”, four burner gas range purchased in 1997 that on August 10th, 2013, approximately 7:30AM the smoke detectors began sounding in callers’ mothers’ home where his daughter and grandchildren also live upstairs. Caller’s mother, daughter and his grandchildren evacuated the home and called the fire department.
The fire department was at the home within five minutes, they secured the oven by unplugging it and turning the gas off at the main gas line in the basement. They then opened windows and doors to clear the smoke.
The caller decided to put the gas range to the test so he plugged the range back into the circuit, went downstairs, turned the gas back on and before he arrived back in the kitchen the oven had turned itself back on and was already very hot with all knobs set at off.
There were no injuries
