The product, in the report: JennAir model JGS8850CDS02 30 gas slide-in range in stainless steel.
JennAir gas range (model number JGS8850CDS02) was baking a meatloaf at temp of 350 for about 20 minutes when my spouse noticed a burning smell and excessive heat. The oven would not shut off by pushing cancel on the keypad and I had to shut the gas off to get it to stop. Oven temperature at turn-off measured 980 degrees F with an infrared thermometer. Once cool enough we pulled the range away from the wall and unplugged it. The following morning we tried plugging the stove back in and turning the gas back on and the oven restarted without any input on the keypad so we shut it all down again.

The product, in the report: Gas range
3/19/2023: The range had been used that day and turned off about 6:00pm
Th consumer was cleaning the kitchen around 11:00pm, when the electric starter went off. He turned around and all of the control knobs were in the off position (closed). The electric starter still was going off.
He found 1 burner as the culprit and unplugged the burner’s cord underneath the surface. He waited a minute and plugged it back in, but the clicking started again.
He allowed it to run for a minute to see what happened. A normal blue flame started under the burner and then burner ignited. This turned into an orange giant flame and there was an electric buzzing sound. Smoke began pouring from the range.
He immediately turned off the gas and power for the range. He threw water on the fire to extinguish the flames.
He called the manufacturer and made arrangements for a service contractor to come out on Friday 3/24/2023.
The consumer searched on-line and found a similar issue with this manufacturer’s ranges that were sold in Canada and said that a recalled was issued for the problem.
He asked the manufacturer about his unit and their rep. (name unavailable) said his model was not recalled.
The consumer said this would have led to a house fire, had ne not been home or in the kitchen to address it as quickly as he did.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air Gas Downdraft Slide in Range JGS9900BDS
I have a Jenn-Air gas slide in range JGS9900BDS. After heating dinner in the gas oven, I turned it off. About 20 minutes later I noticed that the oven was still on and was much hotter that it was set for. I tried to use the control panel to turn the oven off but it reminded on. The oven door was not locked. and I opened it to look inside. I flipped the breaker to turn off the electricity to the oven. Then I turned the power back on and the oven started to heat agin with me turning it on using the control panel. I could not turn the oven off using the control panel. Again I turned off the power to the oven. The next morning again I turned on the power and the oven started to heat without me turning it on with the controls. I again turned off the power.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air 4 burner downdraft range stove does not have child safety locks on the gas knobs.
One of my children turned on my gas range. Simultaneously, my neighbor was working on his truck and making loud sounds. The inside of my living room smelled of diesel fuel, not the normal sulfur smell that propane gives. At first, we thought it was him.
There are no child safety locks on these gas knobs. Apparently they must not be required, because JennAir customer service told me that these knobs aren’t child locked knobs. So honestly I can’t believe that there isn’t a regulation that requires child safety locks on gas stoves. Insane in 2023.

The product, in the report: Jennair 36” Downdraft Gas (Propane is what we use) Cooktop Model# JGD3536BS00
I have a Jennair 36” downdraft gas cooktop that exploded in my face on December 22, 2022. We purchased the floor model cooktop from Ferguson’s (Blacksburg, VA) in August of 2018 and it was installed September of the same year. I (homeowner/purchaser) put a pot on the front burner and turned the knob to ignite the burner and it immediately exploded in my face. There was no smell of gas or any indication there was a problem. The entire frame was bent up from the counter, cast iron grates were blown off the stove breaking one of them. The heavy knobs were blown off and one was found 7 feet away next to my husband. I was extremely lucky to have not been injured, nor was my husband.

The product, in the report: JennAir kitchen oven range, dual fuel (gas range top, electric double ovens). model no: JDR895AAW, serial no 14059978JA Model JDR8895AAW
My kitchen range caught fire while unattended, and while not in use. I and my partner were in another room when we heard explosive pops. We ran to the kitchen to see flames come out from under the stove top and smoke coming out of the knob holes that are used to turn on the burners. The fire was short lived and went out on its own, but there flames in my kitchen and fortunately nothing else caught fire. My home filled with electrical smoke that we had to air out for hours, in the cold of winter. We unplugged the unit.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air propane cooktop: Model JGD3536BS00
Here is a copy of the information that I sent to the manufacturer: I own a Jenn-Air cooktop (propane gas). Model number - JGD3536BS00; Serial number - D63208434. I purchased it new on Jan 5, 2018 (receipt attached). On Jan 14, 2021, one of the cooktop’s burner valves locked in the OFF position. It was not possible to move the valve at all. Replacement was necessary; the repair cost was $238.19, about 15% of the price of the new cooktop - receipt attached. It was annoying to experience such a serious failure in a virtually new cooktop. But we were able to use the cooktop with one inoperable burner until the repair was completed.Today, we experienced another similar failure. However, this failure raises SERIOUS SAFETY concerns. My wife was cooking and called me for assistance when she was unable to adjust the flame or turn off a burner (NOT the one that was just replaced). Another burner valve was locked but this time, it was locked in the ON position. There was no indication of a problem when my wife turned the burner on.I removed the pan from the flaming burner and attempted to move the valve so that it could be turned off. After some effort, I was able to get the valve to the off position. The flame went out so I assume the gas flow fully stopped. The valve is currently immovable. I continually check the affected burner to ensure there is no gas leakage from the broken valve. One obvious safety concern is the reality that most people do not know how to turn off gas to their cooktop, including my wife. If the flame went out, propane would have been released into the house, creating an emergency.I owned a Jenn-Air cooktop for 20 years before buying this new unit as its replacement. There were no problems whatsoever with the original unit over its lifetime. Consequently, I bought another Jenn-Air. By any measure, there is a fundamental safety defect in the valve units of this new model. I’m a retired guy who has had many gas stoves throughout my life. NEVER have I experienced this type of failure. Experiencing TWO serious failures within less than four months is sufficient for me to conclude that this potential hazard must be remedied ASAP or this cooktop will have to be discarded. A copy of this email is being sent to the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The product, in the report: Jen air gas cooktop.
While using our Jen air cooktop, gas, it spontaneously exploded, but luckily blew itself out so no fire at the time. The person cooking was not injured the doors in the kitchen were blown open and the knobs to adjust the fire were all rendered unserviceable. We are not claiming or alleging damage to our property, but obviously I did not trust the cooktop and it was essentially unusable. We now have an induction cooktop.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air cooktop . Silver base with 4 gas burners activated by electric starter. 4 silver knobs in front of stove top easily activated by pressure of any kind.
Stove top has large silver knobs that when pushed down activate the electric starter as the gas flows. A few of the knobs will compress with any type of pressure - cookie sheet being set on it, large pan on the front burner can easily compress the knobs - this allows the gas to begin flowing and although there is a ticking noise to alert you I still feel this is unsafe - and also severely limits what size pans you can use.

The product, in the report: Jenn-air model JGC1536BS cook top
I purchased a JGC1536BS Jenn-Air gas cook top range in July of 2017. The unit was installed by the vendor installation firm. Almost immediately after using the unit I noticed a situation when using the front left burner. The issue is, when you have a pot or pan on top of this burner with the burner in use, the dial knob gets extremely hot to the point it now longer function. When turning the knob to the right to turn it off, you quickly notice how hot it is and it gets stuck in lowered position which causes the ignitor to continue to try and light a flame when the gas is off but the know is stuck in the lower position which is the ignitor on position. The natural instinct is to lift the know in or to get it out of ignitor mode. Because the know is stiff due to the excessive heat, you pull up strong and then the know pulls off the stove and now is in your hand. When doing so, you can get burned while lifting it and then you instinct is to release it from you hand so than to reduce the impact of a burn at which point you are know juggling it while burning yourself. The know is heave and you tend to try and keep it from hitting the cook top, counter or floor to avoid damage and the result is a burn on your hand, arm or other part of your body.
I called Jenn-Air service a number of times. The first time, Jenn-air sent a tech out and the tech determined that the pot I was using was too close the knob. I did not agree because the pot was centered on top of the burner. I agreed to continue to use it and told the tech I would call back if the issue were to happen again. The issue did happen again and this time it happened to my daughter. I called Jenn-air back and there sent another tech. Jenn-air also connected me with their safety department at which point I made a formal complaint. no one called me back from safety so I call them back. I spoke to a person and they said they would discuss with the tech coming out the second time
When the tech came the second time, I showed him an example of the situation with a pot on top of this burner even pushed further away from the know and now not centered on the burner (which is not an optimal uses case) and the same situation occurred. The tech when out to his vehicle and came back with a device to measure the temp of the know. The tech also agreed the know was not working properly because it was too hot and he agreed that the temp reading of the know was outside safety requirements. He called Jenn-air while on site and they said I was not using the cook top properly.
This is no doubt a design flaw which makes this device unsafe and it does not perform as advertised.
Multiple family members have been burned with scars as a result and the device is only partially usable.
Jenn-air refused to do any further investigation.

Newly purchased cooktop was professional installed in approximately October 2016. Insd son was preparing to cook and when he ignited the cooktop it exploded causing damage to a light fixture and the cooktop itself.
Unk cause, insd suspects possibly a gas knob was “bumped” and allowed it to leak gas into burner area.

The product, in the report: Jenn Air Gas Slide In Range
Jenn Air Model JGS8750BDB Was baking crab cakes in the oven, took them out after 10 minutes and they were burnt. Realized that while I had set the oven to 350 it was way hotter I’d say around 600 degrees. We turned off the oven and after about 20 minutes I realized the oven was NOT OFF and still at that 600 degrees. My husband closed the gas line to the oven and we waited to burn off the rest of the gas.
We haven’t been able to cut the electricity to the stove as the plug is behind the oven and we can’t get the oven out. We’re having to leave the door open because it still gets warm in the oven. At night we are cutting the power at the breaker (which also has the refrigerator on that fuse).
I have to wait 3 more days for repair man to come out as per Jenn Air (now Westinghouse) has that scheduled. I’m going to try tomorrow to get him out here earlier.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air gas range.
I purchased a Jenn-Air gas range on October 20, 2016. The Model Number is: JGS1450D0S0. The Serial Number is: R61713373. The right side of the outside of the oven gets very hot when the oven is baking at 350 degrees. On December 6, 2016, a service technician sent by Jenn-Air measured the temperature and found it to be 139 degrees. He told me that 120 degrees is considered scalding and may cause a burn. Jenn-Air has stated that an outside temperature of 152 degrees is allowable. A person who touches the outside of the oven while it is baking may get burned. This is especially dangerous for children.

I turned gas cooktop knob on to the ignite position. It clicked twice, as usual, then there was an explosion. Blew all knobs off, grates, and discs covering burners. Smoke was billowing out of holes where control knobs had blown off. There was a smell of electrical wires burning. No gas smell. No fire as there was no flame. Jenn-Air Model #JGD3430BB00

The product, in the report: Jenn-air CVGX2423 Expressions sealed gas downdraft cooktop with four burners.
Jenn-air CVGX2423 I finished cooking dinner, turned OFF the stove and walked away. All of a sudden, the top turn-on knob, for a burner I rarely use, was smoking, then sparked and caught fire. The flames came up through the knob opening on the cooktop. I put out the fire with a dry chemical (Kidde) extinguisher. The fire department confirmed the fire was out and turned off the gas and exhaust.
This sounds similar to the 2004 recall of a similar Jenn-air downdraft cooktop.

The product, in the report: User manual identifies product as “Jenn-Air Gas Grill-Range Cooktop” Four LP or natural gas burners (natural gas installation), left burners 8,000 btu/hr, right burners 10,000 btu/hr, 115 VAC, 60 Hz, 15 Amps.
Our home’s kitchen was equipped by the builder with a Jenn-Air gas grill - cooktop with a downdraft fan ventilation system. Last night I turned on the fan and noticed a faint glow between the fan switch and the escutcheon that covers the fan switch and burner valve controls. As I turned off the fan, I noticed an acrid burn smell, and suspected a fire was burning insulation.
This morning I turned off the gas and unplugged the unit, removed the control knobs and the escutcheon, and saw that one of the two metal blades conducting electricity through the fan switch was broken off (I will attach photographs). Apparently closing the switch resulted in arcing that burned the switch housing, the wire insulation.
I am concerned about the following potential hazards: - Shock hazard, if the metal surface of the control box or the range were part of an electrical circuit. - Electrical fire hazard resulting from arcing - Gas fire hazard, if the arcing could damage the gas line or control.

The product, in the report: Gas Range 45” cooktop #2221819 with cartridge 2282719
The consumer says the gas cook top was just recently used. He says the issue is that the knob needs to be turned all the way around in order to get a spark to ignite the burner. He says that he noticed the knob turned slightly, causing gas to flow out of the burner but not light.
Furthermore-Burners do not re-light in case of blowout.
His concern is that the knob needs to be turned all the way to high and even passed it, just to get the burner lit. The consumer says that he smelled gas lit when this happened and is very concerned for the safety hazard posed by this issue.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and they are sending out a technician on Saturday 11/3/12 who is offering a replacement product.

My wife purchased a Jenn Air duel fuel, double oven range. The top burners are gas and are controlled by knobs on the right side of the stove top. These knobs will activate an electric igniter that sparks beside each burn with just the start of turning the knob. The igniter sparks when the knob passes the same spot, BOTH starting and OFF. We have had instances where the gas either never ignited or the flame blew out. In these instances, the gas continued to come out of the burner building up fumes. Unfortunately you cannot turn off the gas with the knob WITHOUT GOING PAST THE IGNITER CAUSING IT TO SPARK when trying to shut off the gas. We have had a few ‘flame outs’, but only because we are watching for this issue has nothing more serious occurred. I have reported the problem to Jenn Air without any response from them.

Hurt, care not known Made Dec 19, 2011, sent to the company Dec 28, 2011, published by CPSC Jan 12, 2012
The product, in the report: gas Jenn-Air cooktop
consumer sent 3 letter to manufacturer about gas Jenn-Air cooktop. December 13,2009 Jenn-Air Brand Home Appliances 553 Benson Road Benton Harbor, MI 49022-2692 Dear Jenn-Air, Last year we finished a major refurbishing of our home here in Helena, Montana. As part of the updating, my wife decided to covert from an electric Jenn-Air to a gas unit, which all of her friends said was more cook friendly. The new gas Genn-Air looks nice, and works fine, but I do think you have a major and serious safety design flaw in the unit. In my opinion, the igniters should start operating as soon as the control knob is turned, as opposed to having to go a full counter clockwise turn to get to the “ignite” position. We have had a few circumstances where the knob was turned on, but not turned enough to the ignite position (fast enough) to avoid some very burnt eyelashes. I do sincerely consider this a serious design safety flaw, which can be very easily taken care of by having ignitors come on prior to gas being released. Is there a kit available to make such a change? Sincerely, [redacted]
October 25, 2010 Jenn-Air Customer Service 553 Benson Road Benton Harbor, MI 49022-2692 Dear Jenn Air, Several months ago I wrote you (copy attached) about a serious safety issue with our new gas Jenn Air unit. In short, the issue is a serious safety design flaw, whereas the gas igniters do not turn on until a gas knob is turned totally around, counter clockwise (all the while, gas is being released during the entire time. ) Your service people would not admit a design error, and had no better advice for me over the phone than for me to read the Operators manual. I said I would have a problem making all guest stove users read the manual before they turned the unit on, and that this/their solution was not acceptable. The situation continues to deteriorate, and we have had additional serious eyebrow singeing flash incidents that have brought me to this point. Just a heads up, that if this unit is not replaced or repaired (modified) to our satisfaction before the end of the year, one of my New Years resolutions will be to take you to small claims court for a resolution. I tried earlier to be reasonable with you folks. Hopefully this potential suit will result in some corrective safety actions on your part - I have always been a Jenn Air fan and expected better from such a quality manufacturer. [redacted] November 1, 2011 Jenn-Air Customer Service 533 Benson Road Benton Harbor, MI 49022-2692 Dear Jenn-Air: Further to my letters of Dec. 13,2009 and October 25,2010, copies of both attached. We had yet another serious near miss facial bum incident by a recent house guest not familiar with your gas cook top. This letter is in accordance with the Montana Small Claims Court Checklist which directs me to “send a letter to the defendant demanding payment by a specific time. A certified letter is recommended. When you file the claim and go to trial, bring the proof of mailing the letter” Before stating a payment amount, and date, please be aware that: A. I have canvassed all gas cook top units for sale in the city of Helena, Montana, and ALL of them, every make and model, have the igniters come on before gas is released. This includes your Jenn-Air units at the Vann’s Appliances store. B. I also noted with interest that on page 4 (copy attached) of your own User guide for the JGD8130 and JGD8345 models, you issue a bold caution to users during a power failure “to strike the match first and hold it in position before turning the knob to Lite - doesn’t this confirm/support my contention that your design is incorrect from a safety perspective for the unit we purchased. Payment demand: I would be satisfied with an equivalent replacement unit which has the igniters coming on first, plus actual expenses to remove the old unit and install the new one. OR $1750.00, which I believe would cover the first option (purchase price was $1,034) If no positive response is received by November 22,2011, I will proceed to filing a small claims court action, and also make appropriate state and federal public safety associations aware of my concerns. The product, in the report: Jenn-Air Gas Range Model JDR8895AAS
Today November 7, 2011 My wife called me into the kitchen to check out our Jenn-air gas stove. She explained to me that she had tripped the circuit breaker to the stove because the burners had started sparking as if they were trying to lite. she said she tried turning the control knob and of course the burners lit and went out, but the sparking kept on going. Each time I reset the circuit breaker the sparks would get faster and louder and the control knobs start to pop and spark as if to short circuit. I eventually just unplug the stove and stop using it for safety reasons. Also back in July of this year the oven on this stove would turn on by itself. The timer would beep and the panel would show the that the oven is heating up as if someone had turned it on. But of course no one had’nt.
I called Jenn-air customer service to see if they had any ideas or what could cause this. Their only option was to call a repairman at my expense, no thanks.
My stove is a Jenn-air double oven gas range (model JDR8895AAS). Purchase about July 2006.

The product, in the report: Jenn Air Range
I have a 2 family home. In my tenants apartment I have a Jenn Air range which exhausts fumes via a blower in the range and ductwork below the range. If the range burners are set to a very low flame the ranges exhaust fan is strong enough to blow out the flame -- resulting in unburned gas being emitted into the living space. This is a potentially hazardous condition.

The Jenn Air cooktop in my kitchen easily turns on the gas without igniting. The first time the fire department came when I awoke with a headache and discovered it had been on since dinner. The consumer discontinued use of that burner. The consumer went to the mfr’s website and the advice was to discontinue the use of the burners until it has been repaired.

No one hurt Made Aug 2, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 24, 2011
The product, in the report: Gas stove. 5-burner cooktop, double oven.
On August 1, 2011, our 5-burner Jenn-Air stove (Model JDR8895AAS) started behaving strangely. The automatic ignition on all 5 burners was sparking continuously, even though all the knobs were in the OFF position. This would not stop regardless of what we did with the knobs (naturally, if we turned them to let gas through, the burners would light).
We pulled the stove away from the wall and disconnected the unit from the power source. This stopped the sparking. After 3 hours or so, we re-connected the stove, and this time large sparks, and smoke, started coming from under the knobs themselves (in addition to the sparks at the burners). For a second, it seemed like a small fire had begun under the surface where the knobs are. We immediately disconnected the stove again, and the sparks stopped, but smoke continued to come out.
I suspect a major short circuit, either with the control panel, or at some junction box somewhere. We have not lifted the surface yet, but we did notice that there are cables attached to the knobs that are exposed, and should liquid fall on the knobs (not an unusual scenario for a stove), it would very likely create a scenario for a short circuit, and possibly a fire. This is clearly a design flaw.
We also did some research on the internet, and found out we are not alone. The same thing has happened to others:
On a blog with complaints about Maytag appliances (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/maytag_oven.html), [REDACTED] wrote on 11/22/08: “We bought our Gemini Oven in ‘04 (almost 4 yrs. to date). This morning our son called out, There is something wrong with the stove! The ignition was off, but sparking as if we were trying to start the stove, but all knobs were in the off position. I could start the stove, but each time I returned the knobs to the off position, the ignition continued to act as if we had it in the light position. Worse...the ignition or something under the knobs began to spark and we saw flames coming from under the knobs! There was an electrical short of something. We unplugged the oven from the wall and turned off the gas. I am just glad we were home! A repair man is coming out on Monday as it is not covered according to Sears.”

This range has heat vents on top of the door, just under the knobs. The knobs get so hot that they have melted and it’s necessary to warn anyone to stay away from the stove when it is on because they could easily be burned. Especially dangerous for small children.
I believe that this model is poorly designed and should be replaced. Two of the knobs have melted so badly that they can not be used.

The product, in the report: Jenn-Air 34” gas (Propane), 4 burner, downdraft, Stainless Steel cooktop
Jenn-Air Model CVGX2423, downdraft propane gas. One of the burners quit working, several months ago. Repair person said could be fixed, but the other burners would probably stop working and the cost to repair would be more than it would cost to replace, as he seen this alot with with this model. Today I was cooking using the 3 working burners, the top right burner was hard to turn on and would not turn on fully. I tried to turn it off and could not. Turning the knob to off the burner remained lit. Turned off all burners. Blew out the flames on stuck burner the propane continued to come out. Turned off the propane at the bottom of the cabinet to stop the propane from comining out of the burner. Turned the propane back on to see if the propane would still come out of the burner and it did. Turned the propane off under the sink. Will replace the unit immediatealy. This is an accident waiting to happen. The unit was installed in 2006 when we had our house built.

The product, in the report: Slide in downdraft gas oven/range
Jenn Air downdraft range of only 2 years (and very low usage) electronic board has stopped working. Board is responsible for controlling delivery of gas to the oven. In other reports on line this has caused several fires and had cause the safety glass to break out of the oven. Apparently, the control board was not insulated and the heat from the oven melts the protective plastic covering on the wires and results in the failure of the electronics board and the other problems observed.

The product, in the report: Gas Cooktop
We have installed a Jenn-Air Model JJGC1430ADS 30” Gas Cooktop as part of a kitchen renovation. The controls for each burner are in the following positions: “Off” at the 6 o’clock position, “Start” or “Ignite” at the 4 o’clock position, “High” at the 3 o’clock position, “Medium” at noon and “Low” at the 9 o’clock position.
Having had other gas cooktops our experience has been that there is a stop or indent of some sort at the “Start” point where the gas ignites. On this cooktop the indent is at the “High” or 3 o’clock position. This means that it is very easy to turn the control knob past “Ignite” to “High” if you are not looking closely. This results in the free flow of raw gas into the home that is NOT burning. Our installer and we ourselves have already experienced this free flow of gas and it would be very easy for someone cooking or a child to turn the controls past the start point creating a very unsafe condition as, once you pass the start position the igniters do not function.
Though we understand the advantage of having gas flow and being able to light the cooktop on a manual basis should power to the home fail, we do NOT understand why Jenn-Air would design a product where the ignition of the gas is subject to such easy failure caused by what we believe is simply having the indent in what appears to be an incorrect location.
Last, we have already contacted Jenn-Air regarding our concerns and have been advised this the configuratin is in fact what they designed.
