The product, in the report: GE Cafe Gas Range

I have a GE cafe gas range and am having issues with the gas burners going out during the simmer mode. This issue occurs when the oven door is opened then closed. My concern is having a gas leak exposure if unaware of this happening while cooking. This can be very hazardous if the burner impacted is not turned off when the issue occurs. The gas will continue to run through the burner. This has been occurring since the range was new. I have had numerous service calls from the applicance store with no resolution. The technician tried to fix but was unsuccessful. To go further, I also contacted GE who provided a tech to review issue. The technician realized there was a design flaw in the vents in the front of the oven where air would pull through when door was opened and closed causing the gas to go out on the stove top. The resolution is to remove all the simmer function from the range to alleviate the design flaw causing the issue. This is not acceptable because cooking will always need a simmer capability.

Caller stated that she noticed the gas range starter was not igniting the range. She stated that she had to use a lighter to light the range. She stated that when more than one burner is in use, she noticed that there were flames popping up on top of the range, seems like a gas leak.

The manufacturer was contacted, and a service technician came out January 2023, she was informed that the range issues she was having was user’s error. She stated that she was still having problems, the manufacturer was contacted again. Another technician was sent out in February 2023, and when he opened up the range the wiring was burnt and left a lot of ashes inside. Caller stated that she was not advised of the diagnostics. She stated that she is still waiting to hear back from the company. She has called them back several times since the technician came out, but her calls keep getting disconnected. Caller stated that she tries not to use the range because it is unsafe.

The product, in the report: GE Cafe Range. Model # CGS990SET5SS, Serial number SRDD126257P. It’s a 30” double oven gas range in stainless steel

Our GE Cafe Gas range, model CGS990SET5SS, was leaking carbon monoxide. My husband almost passed out, was vomiting, headache, difficulty breathing. I experienced light headedness, headache and dizziness. We had used the oven the morning of the 9th, just had it set to warm, and it had been turned off since 11am on the 9th but was emitting, according to the fire department, over 100ppm. I’d like to also note that my dog that stays in the kitchen area at night had vomited a large quantity of bile that morning before the leak was discovered. The fire department was called and also an ambulance.

The product, in the report: GE - Cafe Series 30” Cooktop - Stainless steel Model: CGP350SET3SS S/N: MD717075Q

A GE Profile Gas Cooktop Previously a similar complaint was filed with CPSC.GOV (Report No. 20160525-03917-2147418317) on May 25, 2016. It was investigated and GE sent a tech about 4 times to replace a bunch of parts.

GE - Cafe Series 30” Cooktop - Stainless steel

A complaint was also filed with GE Appliances: reference number is # [REDACTED]

Details: The cooktop was being used when we heard a loud explosion in the kitchen, went there and saw cooktop are upside down and heavy flames from the cooktop but NO Fire. All pots and pans were all over the counter, the vent hood was hit by something heavy causing damage to the vent hood and the eventually damaged the cabinet. The side of the cabinets also damaged, the countertop cracked.

I filed a report with GE Appliances immediately, GE contacted me few days later on and started to ask questions in bits and pieces on 6/29/2018, she GE would need to look at the unit, investigate and will take days. I requested her to at least either replace or let us replace the unit so we could go back to our kitchen but her answer was negative. She referred me to GE Insurance for damages and and other options for food> contacted GE Insurance and started to get a run around, finally gave up when I noticed their motive was to protect GE Appliances instead of helping me with the issue.

Of course, were not going to stay at home without the cooktop since we have small children and older parents. I requested both GE Appliances and their Insurance company to schedule the inspection immediately but it was denied. So, we replaced the bad cooktop with a new cooktop and put the old one back in the garage.

The product, in the report: General Electric Cafe Gas Range. Gas cooktop. Double oven. Lower oven was the problem / emitting the carbon monoxide when used.

I purchased my GE Cafe Gas range in December 2014 for approximately $3,000. Starting in March 2018 the gas oven was emitting large amounts to carbon monoxide anytime it was used. It was likely emitting CO for much longer, but I had my home smoke detectors replaced with smoke / CO detectors and they were constantly being triggered. My local gas company ([REDACTED]) and fire department (Austin Fire Department) both came out to my house to measure the levels of CO after the oven was turned on and it was emitting at deadly levels. The gas company and fire department both disabled the gas to the range / oven and told me it was unsafe to use. There is actually a safety “tag” on the oven saying it is unsafe. I can provide a copy.

GE and other appliance repair have been out over 7 times and finally are calling the oven unrepairable.

So I am now having to replace an oven I purchased not even 4 years ago. This needs to be researched and fixed by GE...people’s lives are at stake. I am a widow with two daughters.

The product, in the report: GE Café Series Gas Double Oven Model CG5990Set3SS, Serial Number VZ114802P

We have owned a GE Café Double Oven Gas Range Series Model No:CG5990Set3SS, Serial No. V2111/802P since 2013. About two months ago the igniter on the main oven or lower oven exploded and shorted out the main panel. We first contact GE about service and we were told that there was NO GE service available in our area. So we contacted an independent local service company. The service company found that the lower oven glow igniter was damaged. They ordered the parts including a new igniter and circuit control board and came to our home today. When the service man installed the new igniter, it also exploded. He contacted GE and they told him we needed another part. Afterward I went online and found that GE has had numerous problems with the igniter on their GE Café Ranges. There has been no recall that I can find. Why? This range cost $3,000. It should have lasted longer than 4 years. We are going to have to spend more than $500 to fix it. I also found online a report of the failure of this type of igniter in stoves, I wonder why? I would like to complain that first an exploding igniter in a natural gas stove is extremely dangerous. My wife and I are retired and we do just general cooking and we maintain our appliances.

My wife [REDACTED] was boiling water on the kitchen stove when a fire broke out. She was home with 5 children.

She reached to turn off the knob for the gas range and the knob came off in her hand.

The gas to the stove top did not stop and flames came from the control panel where the knob had melted.

NOTE: This same occurrence happened in May of this year. I filed a similar report. I subsequently has the appliance repaired by a professional appliance repair person. He indicated that the fire was “electrical”. I have pictures of all of the damaged parts.

The product, in the report: GE Cafe double gas stove stainless steel 36 inch

I purchased a GE cafe series gas stove. I have had this product just under three years. This is a double oven and recently the bottom oven didn’t work. I determined that the issue was the igniter, a common issue when gas ovens don’t work. I proceeded to remove the bottom tray of the oven to access the igniter. What I found was that underneath the bottom tray and directly over the igniter is a steel deflector shield. This shield had gotten so hot from the igniter that it had melted a hole through it. The melted steel dripped on the igniter and caused it to burn out. I do believe that this is a defect in the stove and a potential fire hazard. Ge representatives state that this is a normal occurrence and they refuse to cover it as a defect in their product.

The product, in the report: 30 inch slide in stainless steel double oven Cafe series, 5 sealed burner

I purchased the Ge Cafe stove/oven on 3/14/12. Soon after I called GE direct because I burnt my fingers when I went to adjust the knob controls, someone came out and said that is normal and to use a oven mit or pot holder when using the knobs...REALLY?? ok next I went to use the high temp jet and it went poof with this force that the little iron disc FLEW up hitting my exhaust fan and landing on my counter and burning the counter, the sent me a replacement check for the counters , The burner that went poof actually was melted , they sent me all new burners. Then after that as I was cleaning my stove I noticed that the rings around the knobs have melted , again calling GE , they send me out new rings. Now I am out of warranty and the unit decided to not light...I called an they said sorry out of warranty , in the mean time I have worry free through my PSEG and he comes out to replace the igniter...Worked less than 24 hours and today 11/11/14 the lower oven will not ignite again. For the thousands I spent on this oven I think it should be labeled a LEMON!! Im so upset about this purchase and GE wont do a [REDACTED] thing! the best that can do is according to [REDACTED] is 99 dollars for ge to walk in the door an 50 % off parts plus labor...I should NOT be charged a dime, out of warranty or not THIS should not be happening to a stove that really isn’t that old!! I hope you can help me to fix this problem...I would also like to mention that my finger tips have been burnet numerous times on the knobs!

The product, in the report: GE Cafe Range/Oven, Stainless Steel 5-burner

We came home and noticed the house smelled like gas. We located the source of gas coming from one of the range burners because we could hear “hissing” noise (no flame). After turning off the gas at the valve, we inspected the range and found the problem to be the knob. The plastic collar was cracked and allowed the metal insert to turn freely, leaving the burner in the ON position.

We inspected the other knobs and found 4 out of 5 knobs were cracked.

I think this is a serious fire/gas hazard to consumers since we only had our range for about 3-years.

When using the top oven on our GE Cafe™ 30” Free-Standing Gas Double Oven with Convection Range (Model #: CGS990SETSS), the control panel and knobs for the cooktop get dangerously hot. They are so hot, in fact, we have to use an oven mitt to use the knobs. Without the mitt, we risk the chance of getting burned. This is clearly a safety hazard especially in a house with a child. Because of this, we now refrain from using the top oven.
