The product, in the report: GE Gas Range. Serial number VA141227P, model no P2S920SEF1SS
Last week (Jan 14th, 11.15 am EST), I spoke to [REDACTED] of the South Dakota GE Customer Service office, in regard to an operational and potential safety problem with our gas range, less than 2 years in service.
The main control knobs, front panel, coordinating the gas flow to all jets have flimsy plastic bushings, and offer only inadequate purchase on the brass drive shafts for each gas control valve.
They are now slipping and turning freely on the shafts, making it impossible for a user to know that the gas is properly shut off after cooking.
According to [REDACTED] of GE, this is not logged in as a known issue, and there are no parts updates or upgrades in the system or planned.
Going forwards, we need to determine a better quality of control knob, as a safe way of operating this stove.
The range has seen extremely light use, is in as-new condition apart from this physical defect issue, and has been carefully treated by middle-aged owners (ie : operator abuse is not part of the equation here).
I look forward to hearing from you - thank you.

The product, in the report: gas range; black color
On 01/04/15 the submitter’s wife was using the oven for approximately 3-4 hours on the bake setting. Then the submitter’s wife turned the thermostat control knob to the “Off” position. Approximately 15 minutes later, the submitter’s wife noticed the oven was hot and saw the oven thermometer indicated the oven was at a 500 degree temperature. The submitter’s wife repeatedly turned the thermostat control knob to the “Off” position and waited to see if the flames in the oven would turn off but the oven failed to turn off. The submitter turned the gas supply off and noticed the flames in the oven stopped, however, the submitter noticed a glow in the oven. The submitter states the igniter remained on.
The consumer then unplugged the unit. The consumer plugged the unit back in and the igniter began glowing again.
The consumer contacted the firm on 01/08/15 (800-386-1215 [REDACTED]) and spoke with [REDACTED], a manager (case # : [REDACTED]). The consumer informed [REDACTED] of the incident and the consumer was advised that a technician would be sent to his home to examine the unit on 01/13/14.
The consumer states there have been no prior incidents.
The oven is used about twice a week.

The product, in the report: GE XL44, black gas stove. 29 3/4 inches wide.
My wife and got up this morning to find the glass of our GE XL44 oven shattered all over our kitchen floor. We spent the next 30 minutes cleaning glass from the kitchen. In looking this up online, this apparently is something that happens with these ovens. Last night, we used the oven, cooking some pizzas at 400 degrees, but we didn’t jar it, hit it, etc. We have no idea what happened.

No one hurt Made Jan 24, 2012, sent to the company Feb 8, 2012, published by CPSC Feb 23, 2012
The product, in the report: GE Self-Cleaning Gas Range
The consumer report about a major safety defect in a self-cleaning gas range. On four separate occasions, consumer’s house has filled with gas because the far right knob that is used to ignite the front right gas burner on the range was engaged without her knowledge. On the first occasion, her family returned from a weeklong vacation to a house filled with gas. After investigating the matter, it was discovered that the right gas burner knob was engaged without the house sitter’s knowledge. A similar situation happened again. The latest situation, the consumer was asleep & smelt gas. When she went downstairs to the kitchen and saw that the right burner knob was slightly engaged. She ventilated the house for 30 minutes to ensure all gas had dissipated. Upon investigation into the incidents, consumer discovered two things. One, the convection/microwave oven is above the stove and sometimes when food is put into the microwave oven, the person leans on the burner knob on the stove and it becomes is depressed and slightly turned, enough that gas is released from the burner. However, when this happens, the person has no knowledge of it. There is no clicking sound from the igniter. Two, if you touch the knob with your body as you move around the kitchen, which occurred in the 2010 incident, the knob can become slightly depressed and turned, and gas can be expelled from the burner. Again, without a clicking sound from the igniter. The consumer is concerned that it has a major defect that could cause her family, her dogs, and her to die.

The product, in the report: gas free standing range
While reaching over the range to get into the cabinet his shirt got caught on the control knob and gas was released. The control knob was on halfway between off and ignition which allows gas to flow without igniting.
He did not notice the failure until he left the home for an 1 ½ before noticing the gas in the home. He opened all the windows in the home and left for a few hours.
He contacted the firm via email on 10/21/2011 and was advised that his concerns would be forwarded to the product team and he would hear back from them. He received a case number REDACTED. The firm was contacted via the phone on 10/26/2011 and he has a service technician scheduled to come out to the home on 11/4/2011. CONSUMER ADDED: On November 4, 2011 AC Service Rep came to service as requested by REDACTED GE Customer Rep stated nothing wrong, just the way they are made! To add insult to almost fatal catasrophe had to charge me $87.50 because questions are not covered by warranty! Told him not paying since REDACTED at GE Requested I have them come to Check out! It is a manufactoring flaw! Told I could buy child proof locks! This is an accident waiting to happen! Very poor engineering !!!
It will be a shame if someone’s house gets blown up or worse People Killed! All Because to cheap to put a locking device on control shaft to lock in!!
He indicated that his concerns are with the knobs on the range any accidental turning of the knobs can cause gas to leak from the range. He indicated that it could potentially pose as a fire hazard.
A report was also filed by the REDACTED. He uses the range on a everyday basis but is extra carefully when using it and ensuring the knobs are powered in the off position.
